No surprise there, but nice to hear nonetheless. I can see 2 years, maybe 3. Any longer than that wouldn't make much sense, we don't know if we'll have more RHD or lefties that end up playing right side and it's possible (hopefully) he's really pushed for competition at 3RD. Brisebois is one guy I can see pushing Troy at RD due to his experience playing his off side and the probably logjam we'll have at LD in 2-3 years time (Maybe Edler, but unlikely, Hughes, Juolevi, Tryamkin perhaps, UFA, McEneny?). Chatfield could be there pushing for 3RD as well.

That 230 Reaves is in the box serving a few after a tussle with Rousell.    He later tries again but Schaller takes him hard into the boards with a legal, but heavy, check that has Reaves visiting the "room" for an evaluation.   He decides to leave Hughes alone for the rest of the season.

That is what I am imagining.

I feel like Reaves vs. Roussel would be like giant flyswatter vs crippled fly. Not sure if I'm alone in this, but Reaves is the one guy I'd be most terrified to be on the ice with. Maybe Byfuglien is a harder hitter, but Reaves has to be one of the toughest fighters in the league.

As for Hughes, I feel like (to a certain extent) the typical concerns over a smaller player are not quite applicable, just because he is so smart, plays with his head up, and is adept at evading fore-checkers. I hope he goes pro this year, and regardless of which league he plays in I expect he'll adapt very quickly.

That was Jett Woo who got sat on his butt as well....Rathbone looks quite a bit bigger...what's going on here...are roids allowed again...?

Super stoked to see him on Thursday...hopefully paired with Mini Mighty....

Will I be able to hear you screaming "Just wait til October... JUST WAIT" from my seat? Sure hope so!

It's just prospects camp, but I'm so fired up to see Rathbone impressing, Gadjovich and Lind being a little more in the spotlight, etc, etc... so much reason for optimism and enthusiasm around the future of the team, even as media is dumping on our most recent pro signings.

    Motte - Kero - Boucher

    Dahlen - Gaudette - Archibald

    Jasek - MacEwan - Lind

    Gadjovich - Darcy - Palmu

    Carcone, McMaster, Hamilton

    Juolevi - McEneny

    Brisebois - Sifers

    Sautner - Chatfield

    Blujus, Dirk

How does that look? I probably went too heavy on the kids as not that many AHL vets will likely sit out for that long.

Blujus probably has a spot over Sifers on average, if I recall @UticaHockey's commentary from late last year correctly. I'd also assume that Bancks would be one of the first 13th forwards if not playing bottom six.

Centre looks solid with Gaudette, but if he's not there it looks dicey at best. Motte and Kero can probably go 1-2 but even then, McEwen hasn't played C as a pro and one injury hurts big-time. If that line-up stays healthy for a bit though, I love it, especially from a Canucks prospects development perspective.

Wondering why he isn't on the list of prospects coming to prospects camp.

Go check out Sid's latest post in the development camp thread - he's explained that the khl preseason actually starts quite soon and that Manukyan is likely focused on impressing his current team and trying to earn more ice time with them. A prudent choice.

I personally would rather see him on the wing.

I don't understand how that would "mess up" his game seeing that he only played center for 5 games this season at the recent of the canucks. He played well (not as well as on the wing). After those 5 games he was immediately moved back. I trust his current coach knew what he was going considering the domination Elias and Vaxjo showed this entire season.

You are probably aware of this, but for others who aren't, those five games were a pre-determined trial that Vaxjo's coach decided upon earlier in the season. I can't remember if the Canucks were involved in that decision or not, but Hallam wanted to give him a shot at centre and see where his play was at that position. In the end, the timing of it worked out nicely, since it was fairly soon after his five games at centre that Vaxjo signed (traded for??) Dennis Rasmussen, who slotted in as 2C on Pettersson's line. Obviously we know how that ended up.

The Canucks have said a few times that they see EP as a centre in the NHL, regardless of how long it takes for him to be comfortable/successful there. Given our current centre depth, I see this as the right attitude to have. Should we luck ourselves into another blue-chip top-six C in next year's draft, then I think it becomes much more realistic that EP ends up a full-time winger who can perform spot duty at C in a pinch. That would make our top -six forward group quite ridiculous.

As you say though, he certainly was more dominant on the wing this season, so it's not like there is a bad option moving forward. I can't wait to see his talent come training camp!

What's your deal, man?  I said J.R was scared, is your name J.R?

And hockey IQ and Virtanen as an example was being discussed.. so I was telling a certain poster to save his breath and effort.  I was actually trying to diffuse the situation but here we are... Thanks for that

Jesus man just get off my ass.  I don't want to get in a 10 reply argument over this garbage

    J.R.'s name isn't even J.R. anymore :(

Argument aside, Jett Woo is a solid, safe pick, and I am very excited to see him develop into (hopefully) a top-4 D that can be relied on in pressure situations and at the end of games. His enthusiasm is great to see as well!

I haven't looked at the list of AHL level players that are available in free agency this year but the typical high end AHL veteran lives year to year on either one or two year contracts so there are some available every year.  A player like Phil Varone comes to mind.  No longer a NHL prospect but puts up a ton of assists in the AHL and can get the puck to the prospects on the wing in scoring positions. Varone is signed for another year but that type of player to play as the #1 C in Utica who would be addressing a need without taking playing time from a younger player because a #1 C doesn't currently exist in the system.  Another player that would interest me is Mathew Peca who is a UFA and would be a nice take away from Syracuse/Tampa Bay.

certainly possible that Gaudette, Motte, Kero and cassels are the 4 cmen to start next season in Utica

@UticaHockey Right, you've definitely mentioned Peca before, that would be great to pull off. A while ago, someone else in another thread mentioned Emil Pettersson, who at first glance would also fit the bill (in multiple ways, obviously).

I hope we sign Beagle or equivalent and send Gaudette down, he could use a bit of extra skating work and top six minutes with aforementioned skilled wings can't hurt. Admittedly, I said the same of Boeser last year and we know how that turned out, but Gaudette is not the same caliber of player right now. It could go either way - I know Green was impressed with Adam's details and defensive sense right away, so he could be with either team to start the year and I wouldn't be surprised or displeased at all.

Motte doesn't seem like that quality passing type of centre, more of a speedy motor guy, but that's purely an observation from his incredibly defense-oriented role in the NHL last year. As I said earlier, don't know enough about Kero to comment on his playmaking ability.

Regardless of Gaudette's placement, a sure-fire passing top-six centre would be good to bring in.

On paper they have some good prospects that should be exciting to watch but until we see how they adjust to the pro game I won't make any predictions.  Cole Cassels should teach us to wait and see how these kids develop at the next level.

Even if players like Lind, Gadjovich, Dahlen etc excel in the AHL this team will not be a Calder Cup contender without a true #1 center, a #1 dman and great goaltending.

The #1 center is completely lacking in the organization at this time so the thing to look for is if they address it in free agency.  With the quality of prospects playing on the wing in Utica it should be a high organizational objective to get them a center that will aid their development.

The #1 dman would be a nice bonus but could be less important if Chatfield, Brisebois, Sautner and MacEneny continue to develop. (Or Juolevi being here for the playoffs?)

Then the goaltending situation.....Bachman is a good mentor and a #2 AHL goalie.  He was better down the stretch but really struggled during the first half of last season.  If Demko is here of they waive Nilsson down to Utica to make room for Thatcher we will be fine but if Nilsson is moved to make room for Demko then goaltending will be an issue for the Comets.

What are some names you think the Comets could/should target for that second top six C, either via trade or free agency?

Looks like the wing talent in Utica will be impressive.  I do hope we see one more top AHL center signed to add to what I perceive to be

    Kero

    MacEwen

    Darcy

    at the moment.

As far as a number one defenceman goes, another big step forward from Brisebois this summer might just solve that dilemma.  He was a minute munching top defender in junior and team leader.  I think he will need to show that ability and leadership this year if he plans to be the NHL d man he was projected to be.  Hopefully he comes to camp this year stronger and faster.

That's IF McEwen gets a look at centre, too... looks sketchy. Tyler motte is someone you could add to that conversation, but the need for a talented centre is evident. McEwen is not a playmaker at all, and I don't know enough about kero to say about him.

I would like to get 2 firsts but I think with Tanev's injury history we would be likely to get more like this years 1st (25th) and 2nd(52nd) at best.  This would be a very fair deal imho.  With 5 picks in the top 68 we could do some wheeling and dealing with NYI, NYR, or PHA who have multiple 1st round picks.

I agree, very fair return, though again, a 2019 1st would have a bit more value to us and I don't expect that would have different value to the Leafs than their 1st this year (probably end up near the same spot). I don't expect them to go far into the playoffs next year (fingers crossed, sorry Dad), so not much risk that it drops to the very end of the first round.

Can we have Bachman, Nilssen, Markstrom, and Demko?  What is Demko makes the big club?  What do we do?  Would we send Nilssen down?  I wonder why we need Bachman, while having the other three guys?

Come on furry, the 2 teams, 4 goalies numbers don't make sense? :P

Likely Bachman is Demko's backup again in Utica, at least to start the year. I suspect we stick with Marky/Nilsson for most of this season, maybe seeing movement at the TDL. If injuries happen, Demko comes up, Bachman slides into the starting role in Utica where he's more than comfortable, and everyone is happy.

Honestly, I'd rather take Toronto's 2019 1st with protection than any of their prospects. A couple of late 1sts for Tanev instead of a late 1st + 2nd + prospect is what I'd prefer, but I don't see it as that likely.

Knowing the Leafs, that 2019 1st would end up somewhere in the low 20's, which I think would be the major piece of a great return for Tanev. Obviously having two firsts next year would be awesome for us fans.

    Florida:

2011-12: 10 games missed (rookie year, so probably developmental as well).

2012-13: 50 games missed (2 games played in AHL)

    2013-14: 17 games missed

    2014-15: 6 games missed

    2015-16: 18 games missed

    Vancouver:

    2016-17: 50 games missed

    2017-18: 30 games missed

The last two years have been pretty bad for him injury wise, but there were some warning signs prior to us acquiring him. He's pretty much a lock to miss 10-15 games a year based on these numbers.

A big part of Gudbranson's play in Florida was his partner, Campbell. He was a really good puck mover who could make the majority of the decisions with the puck, freeing up Gudbranson to play his game. He get's in trouble when he has to make a lot of decisions with the puck. That's why he looked good with Edler too. He's more of a complimentary guy, not someone who can take over a game.

I agree that he and Edler should be our top pair, to begin the season at least, since Alex does indeed have that hockey sense, poise, and a good outlet pass. It's unfortunate that we don't have another poised LD on our roster at the moment that could partner Guddy, since I would prefer to have he and Edler on separate pairs to spread some size throughout our top 4. Once he has sufficient NHL experience, I think Juolevi will be an excellent partner for him, but only once OJ is comfortable to play with poise, as a vet would. This could take 10 games or a full season, but I see them being successful together at some point down the road.

    Emil Pettersson?

I like the way you think! 46 pts in 72 games would put him second (in PPG) on the Comets, behind Chaput, for C scoring. He could serve really nicely as a creative, passing 2C, playing with Jasek, Lind, Boucher (if he comes back), etc.

You know it's too slow when our most respected posters feel the need to come.. and blow up a prospect's thread with useless dialogue.

Just having a bit of fun :) To be fair, this all stemmed from a couple of us saying that we're very interested to see him perform at the prospects game in a couple weeks, since he's one of those guys that doesn't have a lot of video out there. Should be exciting to see how his skating compares to some of our better prospects, particularly if we take a D at 7th overall.

Could this optimism about Pettersson have to do with no more WD, and Green now being the coach?

Not gonna lie, Alf, this optimism about Pettersson is probably due to Pettersson. Everyone would be excited about him even if the Canucks announced we'd hired Donald Trump to be the new head coach.

Normally, even with almost-sure things, the approach is extreme, mind-numbing caution, "We'll see where he's at in camp", etc. Very refreshing interview from Green, who is a nice break from the typical hockey cliché junk that typically gets spewed.

Are we talking shot velocity here or the time he (deliberately) took to wait for the shot to develop?

Because as far as I can tell, his shot velocity is elite. You can see that in his highlights, the unofficial slap shot comps that have been posted recently etc. And all the more impressive given his +/-170lbs.

If you're talking about the time he took to take the shot, it's pretty obvious (yet still pretty amazing) the he was waiting for his opening while the D and goalie moved. The kid's got Neo-level ability to slow play down.

What is the explanation for the small difference in velocity, yet have such a huge difference in weight classes?

    Just now, tybarber said:

I think Elias' probably uses a more flexible stick, i.e. he doesn't need as much weight to get the stick to flex the same as Mika's. With stick technologies nowadays I think it is less about weight, but more about stick length and technique.

In addition to what Ty said, I would offer that it's mostly physics. Similar to how some golfers can just crush the ball, it all depends on leverage, angles, stick flex, and mechanics. Swinging your arms faster is good, rotating your hips faster is good, and releasing your wrists is good. EP seems to be very proficient at timing those processes in conjunction with each other to produce the maximum velocity just before and during contact with the puck.

A golf pro I took lessons from once called it a two-lever system. It's the well-timed snap of your wrists accelerating the club through the hitting zone that gives pros an extra 30-50 yards on their drives.
