  1. The risk of that actually ending up being a lottery pick is pretty low though if you look at the entire situation objectively.
  2. You just said 4.5 is what he is worth though. So i question your ability to reevaluate any contract given to Myers. 4.5 just doesn't present any semblance of reality.
  3. If Benning can acquire a top pairing right handed, right side dman without including a core piece or a potential core piece, he absolutely needs to look at that. Realistically the cost of those players in trade, especially ones under 30, is typically prohibitively high. And in most cases there is a big contract either now or needing to be re-upped soon. If JB can shed Eriksson, Tanev, Sutter, etc along with a few of the almost roster guys, then spends that money on a guy like Myers, its a win.
  4. This is just a brutal argument. You don't know what offer the Canucks will even make to Myers at this point. So suggesting that signing him at all is automatically a stupid move is just blind hate, not objective analysis.
  5. There is risk in that approach too though. Who is to say the player you want is going to be available next year? Schenn is a perfect example. Rumors were flying at the turn of the new year that he would be dealt from St Louis. Now he is going nowhere for anything but a massive overpayment. Risk management is a moving target based on a ton of unknowns. And what if the Canucks make the playoffs and their pick is too low to give them that currency to get that top guy? Trade value of picks for those borderline teams is much higher before the position is known unless they totally flame out. Looking at the Canucks now, barring another run of massive injuries, they should be better this year.
  6. Sad, isn't it? This is the Canucks though and they have a habit of making the worst case scenario happen. I personally think the only real risk of the 1st being included is that it freezes up 2 years of 1st round picks from being utilized to acquire an impact dman.
  7. 7 years at 8 mil per is pricy for Myers. It would not be surprising to see though. The thing about July 1 is that its a free for all on those tier 1 and tier 2 players. There are some seriously dumb GM's out there and that will always inflate prices.
  8. If this is how you want the Canucks to evaluate players they will never sign anyone and will never pull the trigger on a trade. A 6.5 to 7 mil contract is pretty much the going rate for a 30 point puck moving right handed, right side D out of free agency. Or if you are extending your own player. If they can get Myers for 6.5 on a 5 or 6 year deal that doesnt have a full nmc and is not structured as a buyout proof deal, that is worth the risk based on the strengths and weaknesses Myers brings vs our current and projected future defense corps.
  9. Lol i dont even know who this dude is but i don't know if he squeaks by the mandatory NHL drug tests. Just sayin.
  10. Thats because you arent being realistic with that number at all. He is worth more than that just based on salaries around the league, let alone being a UFA. As I have said, the contract will determine if signing him is worth it. But 4.5 mil per is not even realistic. Its just another example of you devaluing a player based on nothing but your osn bias.
  11. No. The fact that you cannot see any positives in the player at all vs our current defense situation is why. Hating a bad contract is presented differently than just hating a player. You clearly hate the player.
  12. Signing Myers is only desperation if you come at it from the angle that you are, which seems to be more a personal bias than an objective analysis of if and how he could fit on our current defense. I want the Canucks to want to be a playoff team. Its not desperation, its logical progression based on the last several years.
  13. Exactly. None of these moves and potential moves exist in a vacuum.
  14. Context. Its your friend. Right handed Dmen with size that can move the puck are one of the more sought after players. So even if Myers signed here and didnt live up to what they need, he would be movable.
  15. 9 mil cap hit, no retention by Nashville = lower return. Subban is a brutal comparison. And TB was not in as much cap hell with the Callahan announcement. And TB need to shed cap was to sign Point, their own player. Nashville likely wanted cap to go after a Duchene as aUFA, so were more urgently needing to make that move. Apples to oranges.
  16. You are completely missing the point. You don't have any verifiable evidence to support your "conclusions". You have your biases, assumptions, and impressions, which are not facts as you seem to believe. There is no such thing as ideal by the way. Because there are many factors that go into any personnel decision, and some are not controlled by Benning or the Canucks. They have to react to the market as well and make decisions based on their plan and the availability of options. The Canucks are absolutely at the point where they should be upgrading their defense. As it stands, Myers would likely be a significant upgrade on our current D. If the contract makes sense, then thats a move Benning will make.
  17. What are you even talking about? I haven't given the slightest indication that my opinions are based on some blind following of Benning and Canucks management. You are just running out of viable arguments so you seem to be trying to make me choke on the neverending straw from your constant strawman arguments. And as for the defense, yes we do have to do something about it this summer. Its called making forward progress as a team, maybe you have heard of it. You would rather we do nothing than sign Myers? Thats stupid.
  18. I didnt say spendmoney for the sake of it. I said spend money to fill obvious holes and improve the team. Sitting on cap space hoping they will magically take on say Clarkson and be given Colin Miller to do so is a long shot pipe dream. And you don't build teams around long shot odds. That also depends on the simple supply and demand dynamics though too. That 6-7 mil absolutely needs to be spent on an upgrade to the right side D. What are the other options to compare a Myers signing too? Plus there is the simple time value. How long do you wait to add a right handed, right side dman to complement the core of the team? The Canucks arent going to get a comparable player to Myers by taking on a garbage contract like Marleau's. They might get a decent pick or prospect. Plus, they already have their own garbage contract they need to get rid of.
  19. Its not all or nothing though, that's the point you are missing. And the fact that Myers doesn't have to be a saviour to be worth it for the Canucks. The Canucks need to get better, especially on defense. Not going from bottom feeder to guaranteed cup champ in one signing isnot the bar they should be getting measured on, neither the Canucks nor Miller, Myers, or anyone else they acquire. Incremental improvement in the surrounding cast is important too. It all comes down to the contract of course to determine if its worth it. But like JT Miller, there is no viable argument to suggest Myers would not fill a couple of glaring needs on that right side.
  20. Look at the right side of our D. Stecher and half of the games Tanev. Then look at the price to trade for a right handed, right side D who would bring similar "stats". Then look at options for the same player in free agency that we could sign. Then tell me that he isn't at the very least one of the best and only viable options there is to impact our D without giving up something we really dont want to. Hateful thinking doesn't count.
  21. It might not be an absolute must have for Buffalo to get a 1st in a deal for Risto. Nice to get and likely for sure, but Buffalo needs to start competing now.
  22. Overpaying is subjective. Paying quality players slightly above market value to get them to sign is different than signing marginal players to much higher contracts than their contributions warrant. It is a given though now that teams need some players on their roster punching above their pay grade and contributing more than they are worth to be successful, especially in the playoffs.
  23. Doubtful. Unless he really values playing for the Canucks. Likely 6 mil would be the bare min he will get on the open market.
  24. Lets tackle each of your paragraphs. 1. How do you know no one is scrambling to sign him? No one CAN sign him yet except Winnipeg. And you dont know if they want to or not. Maybe he doesnt want to sign there. Who knows? 2. Again, you talk in certainties that you have no ability to know for a fact at this point. 3. Lots of people do that, but you are trying to make a biased assumption about someone else's opinions relying on name value. You have no way of knowing what I know or dont know about Tyler Myers. 4. The past five years is not linked to or indicative of the next five. That only works with the Oilers. The trend is amuch better indicator, and the trend is obvious. 5. Once again, an assumption seemingly based on simply dislike of the player rather than objective, evidence based facts. You have no way of knowing anything you have stated here with the certainty with which you state it. Thats the bottom line.
