  1. Clearly the majority of important players are NOT ready for the season again - as Preseason showed.

Petey is the main exception - but i don't think that line works its too one dimensional. Podz, Garland and Kuz looking good too. The rest not so much - Bo, Pearson, Miller look like they are coasting around gassed out there. Think we need to stack petey's line at least and then see who out of Bo / Miller want to step up.

Hughes looks a bit short of where he was in preseason - that flu going around is supposed to be proper nasty and add a broken nose from scumbag Kane to the mix and hard to blame him.

5:5 play has looked reasonably good in stretches - but again the sharpness isn't there, too many missed  class A chances, sloppy giveaways, sloppy changes, loads of pens against.

Special teams are just crap and bench penalties - rusty as well.  When is this group gonna start taking Preseason seriously !! Can't keep coming in unprepared, especially when starting 5 on the road.

I think / hope we will get up to speed in a few games time, just hope its not too late again like last season. D is gonna look brutal next few games - who we playing on the right side - Schenn, Noname, Bieksa ?

1pm starts are always a bust - did we ever win one ?!  Gonna be a long roadtrip - just hope we get close to 500 and no the 0-5 that we all are thinking right now.

  2. I would literally take a 7-0 loss at home if someone puts nurse through the freakin glass - absolutely hate that guy this year.  Remember when Bo actually fought him, musta been like his 1-2 year i think. Not sure what happened to the Bo that seemed to care consistently as a captain.

Anyway i turned that game off after the 2nd - was too pissed off, and after the PP miss on hughes and the the Nurse leveler - you knew how it was gonna go, make up PP's and McDrai were gonna find a way to score in the 3rd and we were gonna turtle like we always do - which i assume from the score sheet is what happened.

Coil are truely a terrible team with 2 absolute superstars and a PP that is designed to utilize them well. Outside of that they are absolute guff.

For the first 2 periods we did play some really good hockey, and kept them contained.  The top 3 lines all look dangerous and the 4th looked tough.

Problem is still D Core, special teams and mental toughness again. Hopefully we can work through the first two as the season progresses but its been a habitual problem of the core.  The D core really do get exposed by McDrai always. Hughes isn't strong enough to stay with them and the rest are all too slow and turn like a super tanker.  Right hand D of Schenn, Poolman, Burr isn't gonna get us to the play offs.. No idea how we ever fix this, but our F group has to be a lot more clinical to out score that deficiency.

P Myers was a #7 dman last year logging less than 15 minutes and only played in a third of his teams games. 2.55 mil AAV is not ideal for that type of player. When you factor in the fact that his base salary is 3.8 million this season there is little wonder on why he cleared. Next season he will be making a more realistic number but his current contract is negative value, that's why Nashville insisted they take it in the McDonough cap dump deal. Maybe Tampa looks at trading him while taking a more palatable contract back... kind of like we did with Dickenson/Stillman.

    Totally this !

Not sure why so many people want us to add another overpaid bottom pair D or 3/4 liner that we have in droves - complete waste of cap space that is REALLY needed at some point to go towards a second pairing D.

  4. Some interesting names there as discussed. Seems like management has been eyeing this final waiver wire drop since the start of preseason so be interesting to see if they make any pickups.

Personally i would pass and save the money to see if we can make a meaningful trade for a 2nd pairing D.  As Button says were cornering the market on bottom pair D and no one on this list really move the needle for me beyond that.

  5. Nice performance - even if it was against possibly the worst team to ever grace the modern day NHL.

Petey lookin more than ready to put the last 2 years behind him with this form.

Kuz - think were gonna love this kid !

Liked the added physicality and this 4th line keeps looking like a huge step forward over last year - just hope Garland isn't out as well.

  6. This does really suck for the fans who only pay their SN sub to watch Canucks hockey.  Yeah its only preseason but all us mad keen hockey fans love watching these games, even if they are sometimes frustrating bad, there are so many stories and points of interest in them still.

I wouldn't mind the streams if the quality wasn't appauling. I can't even see the puck in the res the last 2 came out at looked about 420p or something horrific. Didn't mind the commentary team but the audio quality was terrible and all over the place.

would be great if they could stream to YouTube or another platform with a widely adopted smart TV app too so we all didn't have to spend yet more time huddle in front of a bloody laptop etc.

These might all seem like lofty demands but its 2023, an age where a child can stream in 4K from a smart phone in a 3rd world country in the middle of a hurricane ffs.

  7. Zona gonna be looking for pure futures, and we don't have any. Which also means we can't afford to give any up really. No first for years and Lekkermaki isn't exactly lighting the world on fire since we drafted him + nothing else to really speak of, as this preseason is showing.

Sadly Chyckers is a none option for us, as much as i'd like him.

  8. Trying to pull what positivity I can out of that total dog shite performance.

Bo and JT never seems to show up in the preseason the way they do in the regular - and it rarely hurts them - good to see Petey who seems to be one of those guys who's form follows him, probably due to playing a less physical / energy game, doing well even if he didn't play last night.

It is 'just preseason' and i would be less troubled by the results if we didn't have at least 5 games in the regular season where they play the same way. Like they can't be bothered to show up - thats 10 - 15 points gone.  Consistency is a bit problem for this team and would love to see better effort, even in in preseason.

    Other marginal positives

The new look 4th line looks a helluva lot better than we anything we have seen sine the Lappy glory days.  Great to see a line with identity and physical power for a change there. All 3 forwards looked engages - even Dicko.

Demmer continues to look sharp and dialled in.

That's basically it - Offence didn't show up at all and the D mostly felt like projectile vomit straight to the eyes... my god, Poolman looks awful against any kind of pace, he needs to play every game remaining to make sure he is match ready, and FYI i didn't even hate the singing when it happened ! Rathbone looks great on the puck but man does he throw a good pizza, and other gaffferoo - hopefully won't end up as Sbisa 2.0, but still a bit concerned.

  9. No where near as negative about this one than the flames games, where neither team seemed even bothered. We could have ripped them to pieces in the first / second if the team had really wanted to.  Was a very positive showing from lots of the important 1st team players tonight.  Yeah they switched off about half way through and pulling demmer hurt us. But I think the 'Its Just Pre-season' thing is more of an excuse this week.  Tho i can see why Bruce was annoyed as blowing leads was a bit of a point of failure for us last year.

Can we take a minute to appreciate Quinn Hughes... The kid's skating is absolutely unreal, rewatch the tape and count how many time 2-3 Krackers blow a tire trying to match him. Maybe the best D man we ever see on the Canucks in our lifetimes. Not 100% sold on the move to RH D yet tho.

Joshua - Good add, Can add some serious fore check threat & snarl, and his staking, hands and brain are all to a point it doesn't make him a liability despite his size, unlike some previous incumbents.

Karlson  - Nice hands but those first few strides are like steaming through concrete, He wont succeed in the NHL with that speed / frame. Needs a year in the A for sure.

Hogz - looked fast and determined.

Petey - Looking good - shots not dialed in just yet tho.

Kuz - guys has 20+ written all over him, seemed to link up well with Petey. Not looking like a Russian bust on this showing.

Rathbone - Filthy passing, hard shot and slick skating.  Looks more solid defensively overall but still the odd massive gaff that would likely lead to a goal against a better team. Think he gets a run at the start to proove he can play D again this year.

Silovs - Worst i've seen him play, he was far too over active in net and not tracking the puck well. I think the experience will do him good tho. Still high on this lad. Very young one for the future !

  10. I really like the JR comments. I think most of them were spot on.  Our small, slow team with what is probably our NHL 2nd ands 3rd lines got out played by the bigger hungrier mostly AHL team of CGY, at home, again, like they pretty much have done for the last 10 years, or at least that is what it feels like again.

JR is a winner and winners hate to lose, even in preseason, that is the mindset this group needs IMO.  For all the talk of must win year, this is gonna be our time etc - those sure weren't the performances of a team that really believed or cared about those things.

So pumped to see two games this weekend.

Likewise - so pumped to have Hockey back.

Tho i assume the likelihood of actually seeing the games is really low since these split squad games never get televised or streamed in anyway.
