  1. I've been on this forum almost 12 years now and usually when the forum is excited about a pick (immediately after the pick) the player doesn't pan out (mostly because the armchair scouts and GMs on here have by in large been idiots) That being said in those 12 years Benning is by far the best drafting GM we've had so in Benning I trust. I hope Hughes pans out to be a superstar for us!
  2. Correct me if I'm wrong but Juolevi fits the same criteria as Dahlen and could play for the Comets during their playoff run as soon as his Euro team is knocked out right? https://twitter.com/ryanbiech/status/971494613868412928
  3. I think the offseason will see Tanev and Hutton move on (with potentially MDZ going at the deadline next year) so there will be a spot for Juolevi to take a camp but I would not be surprised if he starts in the AHL and finds his way up when the inevitable injury bug hits. By all accounts, he seems to be having a good season this year and reminds me of his fellow countryman in many respects. Maata made the Pens as a surprise breakout at 19 (thanks to some key injuries) but really struggled the next couple years (injuries were also a factor). Now he's 23 and has found his form again and was a huge part of their cup run this past year. I suspect we have something similar with our Olli, a solid defenseman on both ends who can play 20 mins a night while chipping in some points. Also FWIW, Ryan Suter didn't make the NHL until age 21 as a 7th overall pick. Remember its not a matter of how soon he gets here but how effective he is when he does get here.
  4. Olli is the type of player that does many of the little things right that aren't particularly flashy. Stable and calm back there he's the type of defencemen winning teams need. His style enables his D partner to freewheel and join the rush (in the future be that Stecher or if we're lucky Dahlin) knowing that he will be there to bail them out should a mistake occur. He reminds me of Ohlund who was a very good defenceman for us for years or someone like Vlasic. Both guys who peaked at around 40 pts scoring wise (which isn't even bad) but were otherwise excellent in the other facets of the game. Remember points aren't everything and not every Defenceman is Karlsson. Even Doughty who I'm sure the majority would agree is an elite player *only* averages mid 40 points for his career. He played a good solid game today against one of the better teams in the field. He will be a fine reliable defenceman in the NHL for years to come. I just hope that the organization and the fans have enough patience so that it's for the Canucks
  5. Not sure how SHL signing dynamics work but a little disappointed that he's not going to Vaxjo with Pettersson... Oh well, might do them some good to develop independent skill apart from one another
  6. Just combing through our draft history for those complaining that JB went off the board or the "consensus pick" this year and last - Looking at Bob Mckenzie's rankings because he polls multiple scouts for a "consensus" rank 2008: #10 Cody Hodgson Ranked 9 by TSN - obviously didn't turn out despite us getting a "steal" if we followed the consensus rankings, Karlsson went 15 FYI 09: #22 Jordan Schroeder Ranked 15 by TSN - Picked the BPA according to rankings, again bust 11: #29 Jensen Ranked 24 by TSN - again picked a guy that ranked higher than our draft position - another bust, Could make a case for Saad who was ranked higher but point of post is that we've picked players that have consistently ranked higher and that hasn't yielded great results 12: #26 Guance Ranked 20 by TSN - picked player ranked above our slot again - BPA according to Mckenzie - Fringe NHL Player thus far while Pearson and Skjei are NHL regulars 13: #9 Horvat 5th BPA according to TSN - an example of us going off the board, had we gone BPA according to rankings, would have been Nichuskin. I think we did good here going off board 13: #24 Shinkaruk ranked 14 by TSN - we went BPA again and he has yet to find a regular spot in the NHL, won't call him a bust yet but the numbers speak for themselves 14: #6 Virtanen ranked 7 by TSN - not as great a leap as some on here suggest but interesting note Ehlers ranked 10 and Nylander ranked 9 so either way. any of those picks would have been off the board for those arguing for the rankings 14: #24 McCann ranked 16 by TSN - BPA again, jury's still out but note that Pastrnak went #25 and he was ranked 22 15: #23 Boeser ranked 26 by TSN - went off board and while it's early I'd venture to say no one is mad anymore about us going off the rankings So hindsight is 20/20 but the point of this post is to illustrate that just because a player is ranked higher doesn't mean that it is the best pick. As our history has shown, we have often went BPA and those instances have almost always failed us. I won't say Pettersson or Juolevi are going to be bonafide stars but I trust our scouts and as our history has shown going against the rankings have produced some of our biggest pieces for the future.
  7. Semi Unpopular opinion but I like Liljigren more than anyone ranked in the top 10. Just the idea of him and Juolevi anchoring our D for the foreseeable future is extremely appealing to me. I hope we trade down to grab him if we land 1/2. He won't be an immediate impact guy which will surely draw detractors when some of the forwards that will be inevitably taken after him start producing but in the long run, much like OJ last year is the best long term move especially if we fall to 3-5.
  8. Why is everyone so keen on moving up to 1st? From what I've read and seen in mock drafts there doesn't seem to be a consensus number one guy (Reinhart,Ekblad and Bennett have all been up there in the rankings/mocks) and the gap between those three and the other 3/4 guys slated to go after doesn't seem that large (again just purely based on what I've read not professing to be some expert on jr hockey) So I don't see why there is such a big push to trade assets and/or the number 6 to move up to 1...Maybe someone more knowledgable can shed some light?
  9. As long as we don't give up picks for any rental I'm fine with so given our injuries I'm happy with this trade. Our bottom 6 as people have pointed out is loaded with similar talent so losing Weise isn't a major hit. I doubt an Edler trade is coming until after the break and we see the timetable on return of our other D men
