Only way that happens is by claiming him this year and having time to have a real discussion on a fair contract and his development. This would be assuming he shows us something in that audition.
He’s making 3M$ now. I don’t see him re-signing for less. He’ll go on the market see if a fish will bite.
if nobody does, only then will you be able to sign him to a show me what you got 1 year deal IMO
we have other priority and young players who needs ice time before we make a commitment to him prior to July 1st
-
Pass, sign him at 1M this summer when everybody else snubs him.

Unconditional waiver for contract termination, assuming that it was understood he would clear, no point on mentioning it IMO

THEY GOT OUT OF SAMMY BLAIS DEAL WHAT THE HECK
You're upset because they got out of a 1.5M$ pending UFA?

Problems is, top defenseman (especially RHD) like Pietrangelo don't come on the market every year. So if you want to hit a homerun you need 3 things to happens, 1- that type of D needs to be available via UFA, 2- you need the cap space to sign that type of defenseman, 3- you need these two first things to happen the same summer.
Otherwise, you need develop your own Defenseman and in that regard, we have both been one of the worst developing franchise in the past decade and we've given away countless picks that could've turned out to be a decent top 3/4 defenseman eventually.
What you are left with is a desperate team that wants to improve a position, which leads to that team to overpaying/overvaluing a player like Myers when he hits the market as one of the top available option of a weak field.

It’s smoke at the least. If management wanted they could stomp it out quite quickly.
Hence why I asked for Tobias Bjornfot, Helge Grans and picks if LA wants him. A 21 year old LD in Tobias Bjornfot that already has over 100 NHL games(made jump early) but has struggled to find ice time with the playoff competing Kings(probably should be in AHL). A 20 year old RD who’s playing in the AHL in Helge Grans.
They’re good but not great prospects like Clarke. Could really help in addressing the D pool.
Yes, also, those call might not be for a trade deadline deal, but rather early discussion on a potential draft day deal.
If Demko returns and is lights out, even on a short period, it could help his potential return.

Toronto retained $2.5M on Robin Lehner and got a 5th round pick out of it: https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/players/robin-lehner
Detroit retained $2.125M on David Savard and got a 4th round pick out of it. https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/players/david-savard
SJ retained $1.375M on Nick Foligno and got a 4th round pick out of it: https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/players/nick-foligno
SJ retained $1.125M on Mattias Janmark and got a 5th round pick out of it: https://www.capfriendly.com/trades/players/mattias-janmark
It won't cost us a 2nd for $2.5M. The teams that usually do this are not spending to the cap. These retentions cost the team nothing in terms of actual dollars.
I'm not sure, but I believe those deals were expiring after the season. Here that team would be retaining 3 seasons of Boeser for a 4th rounder.
Again, I'm not sure but I believe max retention is 50% total. So the Canucks would have to retain 25% and the 3rd party another 25%. Otherwise that's 75% retention. Again I don't know the rule by heart, but I thought so.

The bottom line is Schneider was coming off an excellent season. Demko started the season playing terribly and has missed 7 weeks since then (with no firm timeline in his return). The injury status alone probably makes him unmovable at the moment. Then consider his injury history, including concussions and double hip surgery. Red flags o plenty
So then why are teams callings according to this thread sources?

Schneider was more established. Didn’t have the extensive injury history, and wasn’t coming off a season where he posted a sub .900 save percentage. I don’t really think they’re comparable at all
Demko vs Schneider (at time of trade)
27 years old vs 27 years old
151 nhl games vs 98 nhl games
most games played in a season
64 vs 33
career stats < career statsplaying for a bottom feeder vs playing for a contending/president trophy team
And you can’t call 15 games a season, come on

Demko = Schneider from 2013
So basically the return should realistically be anywhere from 7th overall to 12th overall.
But nobody will trade a lottery pick, so that trade will either happen on the draft floor or be a 2024 top-5 protected pick.
Otherwise your looking at à A to A- prospect + bits and pieces

I'm definitely in the minority, but I actually think we got great value considering Horvat is a pending UFA. Glad we got a 1st and Raty is a great prospect. A RHD would've been great, but specific needs aside, I think we got good value here.

Maybe this move motivates the Devils and Rangers to make a move.
Could we play these teams against each other still?
Miller or Boeser to New Jersey??
You know there are other team in the league right?
if NJ and Rangers were not interested in Miller and Boeser before, trading Horvat does not make them call the Canucks. It makes them call the other Teams who have good players to trade with convenient contracts.
-
Underwhelmed by the return, but I guess Raty is the X factor in this deal. Don’t know him much but better not be a bust.
while draft 2023 is strong, the protected first could be a wild card in 2024. NYI isn’t a powerhouse they could stumble into a high draft pick in 2024 (assuming if we don’t get 2023 it’s going to be 2024)

Brutal return. Does nothing to fix this team long term.
I was really hoping we wouldn’t do a deal with Lou…
Allvin just got taken to the woodshed.
Underwhelmed by the return too, but last time we dealt with Lou on a significant trade we got the upper hand lol.

I mean, there no denying that the Canucks dropped the ball here.
But kind of ironic that the medias, who are the ones that leaked the information, are shaming the Canucks way of handling the situation. They are no better IMO. They weren't doing a public service by leaking that information, it was all about the click bait, nothing more.

Di Giuseppe he earned a call up.
I don’t think they’re too worried about Pederson getting claimed. Players like that go on waivers all the time. Especially leading up to the trade deadline.
Exactly, plus if he was ever getting claimed, I’d bet it would be a team decimated by injury and would be back on waivers in a couple of weeks when injured come back.
so Canucks would most likely have a chance to claim back.

Why would they need to find someone to fill his roster spot this year? If we are moving guys like OEL and others they aren't trying to get better or stay the same this year...they are looking at next and beyond.
We can't retain just for this year. We are retaining on OEL for four years.
And you actually need a body to replace him.

problem with retaining is that we need to find a new player to fill that Roster spot. If we fill his spot with a 3-4M$ that similar to him in performances and we retain 2-3M$ on OEL, then we paying his replacement 5-7M$ anyways. Might as well just keep him a couple of years, then buy him out of retain the last 2 years.
His buyout in 2025 doesn't look too bad. 4.2M - 4.2M - 1.5M - 1.5M.

Can we retain on OEL? I was under the impression that since Arizona is already retaining we can't retain anything.
Not that I actually want to retain anything for that long.

10-team no trade list. Wonder if were on it. This late in his career, doubt he wants to play for a rebuilding team.
I'm sure he loved Vancouver, but ready to move on and try to win a cup at this point

Not identical, he signed 2 yrs with Hawks, and won all sorts of awards. Then he went to CBJ, and eventually got his home run contract with Rangers.

They still traded him for assets that eventually was worth less than Panarin, which is what Drance is suggesting.
What is selling "high" on Kuzmenko. Even though he's cheap and was potentially UFA as well, I'm fairly sure he wouldn't have return the same package than Horvat would.
I think in this case, this signing is the ideal Scenario for the Canucks.

Wasn't that the strategy the Blackhawks tried to do with Panarin?
