  1. gaunce will probably be our second liner in his prime, that being said, he's already made great strides in improving his game (and transitioning to left wing), so if he keeps this up he may flirt with the first line every now and then too. I could see him lining up on horvat's left side every now and then.

  2. Yes. Could they send him down to Utica for conditioning?

he's not injured and is currently playing, he wouldn't qualify for "conditioning". we could just assign him there once we are eliminated

  3. I think this series is over.

Flames are beating us to a pulp physically. We don't seem to hold up defensively. 2nd line has gone AWOL. Can't seem to finish or bury our chances.

IF Calgary wins tomorrow (which I expect them to do), this series is over. I cannot see 'Nux winning four straight to take this series.

Well, it's a bonus that this team made a playoffs. I didn't expect them to win, or go very far (if even past the 1st round).

4 straight? is it a best of 9 series or something?

  4. But would they be willing to trade for him?

LA has Quick so that's a non starter, and Anaheim has two young goalies (but could use a vet short term if they fail yet again these playoffs) while San Jose is rebuilding but rumoured to be looking for a young, up and coming goalie rather than a vet.

Would we have to retain salary to make it happen, and if so, how much? What would the return be?

I don't think it's a given we can move Miller over one of the other two.

Although I do see the benefit of bringing him in, I wasn't a fan of the move - particularly for the term and cap hit. It may take retaining salary and very little in return (or a cap dump for cap dump type trade) to move him.

I'd like to see Markstrom (and Lack) stay, but I'm not so sure it'll work out that way.

san jose would probably like a vet goalie to help develop their young goalie. give them miller and eriksson, old and new, they'll be set for a while.

  5. It's hard to imagine either of the 2 SoCal teams taking him.

L.A. has Quick signed for the next 4 seasons at $7 million per and Jones, Bartoszak and Berube are younger and a great deal cheaper than Miller.

Andersen has won Anaheim's #1 job at the age of 25 and his stats, at least, were better than those of Miller this year. I didn't follow that team well enough to know for sure how his play was but had the sense as the season went on that he was doing pretty well. With 21 year old Gibson being a very cheap and adequate backup (2.60 GAA, .914 Sv%, 13-8-0 in 21 starts and a salary under $800K) I'd suggest Anaheim, too, would have just about zero interest in taking on our $ 6 million soon to be 35 YO goalie.

san jose is what i'm thinking.

But yeah, I don't think Baertschi will be a saviour of any kind for us, especially when you consider the Bonino line was one of if not our worst last night. Adding Baertschi to the mix isn't going to have the Bennett-like effect you're all hoping for.

I wouldn't mind seeing him up to see more of what he can do (and I agree that Matthias had some issues with his overall game last night and will likely be replaced by Baertschi next year) but he'll do well with the experience of leading the Comets through the playoffs.

    stupid autocorrect.

  7. I'd rather sit kenins. He was poor tonight.

    didn't see the game tonight.

but was kenins that bad defensively?

kenins was great all game until the final shift of the game when they got caught in their end for 50 seconds and he was completely gassed and failed to make a play at the point to get it out and change. basing his entire game on a single shift is ludacris. the horvat line was basically in the other teams zone all game long up until that point. OrrFour is so out to lunch on this, he's out to dinner

  8. Virtanen is playing better than he was on his February/March cold streaks, but his coach bounces him from line-to-line waaay to much for my liking. All this does is ensure he fails to develop chemistry with linemates and adds to the frustration you can see in his game.

but can you see it on his face or in his body language?

seriously though, i agree. The coach should probably know what lines work by now, he had an entire freaking season plus a first round of playoff to figure this crap out already.

  9. Vey and Sven B are different players and different positions. I doubt either see a lot of playoff time.

Matthias will get the LW and Richardson will be the 3C.

If you are comparing LW then a fairer discussion might be Sven B vs Ronalds Kennins. In this scenario

I still think that SB would sit. My take is that WD likes the Horvat line to be more 'heavier' than what Sven brings. Their ability to work the boards generates puck possession with scoring chances.

These playoffs have career implications for some Van players IMHO. Higgins and Matthias both have to perform as I can see both Sven B and Kennins challenging next year.

i'd rather cheezer play on the second and kenins stick with Horvat.

  10. Every time I log on here almost everyone is dogging Vey like he is yesterday's garbage. He has had a decent rookie season. By decent I mean nothing special but he certainly hasn't been complete junk.

But comparing a player who played a handful of games to one who has played 70+ is a terrible comparison. Whats to say that Baertschi isn't just trying to get noticed as he knows his last shift might be his last for a few games regardless of how he plays?

Anyways I won't hijack this into a Vey defense thread any longer. I just don't see how anyone can compare the two.

to be fair, Cheezer has played in 69 NHL games now, and he has always shown more than vey has. I'm not discrediting vey here, but Cheezer is a far superior player.

    Baertschi NHL totals: 69GP 10G 20A 30Pts 26PIM

    Vey NHL totals: 93GP 10G 19A 29Pts 18PIM

That speaks volumes, and it includes all the misused and mismanaged confidence-killing time on the Flames.

  11. Only 6 times.

hmmmmm, on the Mcguire monster scale, that's not that good... unless... how long was the interview? less than 6 min? for him to be a genuine NHL prospect he needs to get 1 monster/min (though some detractors might say 2) . otherwise he's a bust.
