  1. Does anybody else absolutely hate Brian Burke? I know he did some good things for our organization but IMO he's the most pompous a*shole on the planet. All those things he said about Bobby Ryan and Keith Yandle when he cut them from Team USA last year...

I find him very overrated as an NHL executive. He handcuffed Nonis with all his moves in Toronto and now Nonis is taking the flack (though Nonis did sign some of those contracts).

lets put it this way, I guarantee we won't be putting him in the RoH or having a BB sticker on our helmets when he passes away.

  2. It's amazing to think that Burke could completely ride Baertschi's trade value into the ground but pay two 1sts and a 2nd for Kessel at the same age.

well, to be fair, he also rode kessel's trade value into the ground before he left for cgy too...

  3. Anyone see him as a fit with Horvat? Both above average passers and shooters with good speed. Maybe keep Hansen on the other wing or put Jensen there if he really picks his game up. Or if we are really lucky than Virtanen?

    Sedin Sedin Burrows

    Vey Bonino Vrbata

    Baertshi Horvat Virtanen

    Dorsett Richi Hansen

    Kenins

that's a whole lot of speed skill and youth on one line. virtanen and horvat also both offer a physical side to their game (virtanen more so than horvat) i think it would take a couple of years before we'd see that combo though. they all need more experience before you toss them together.

  4. Travis Green is a great coach. I feel real comfortable with him putting on the final touches for Baertschi. Watch for Baertschi to be a major presence next year. I don't know if he's calder eligible, but he his odds could be legitimate.

To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played any more than 25 games previously in any single season, nor have played in more than six games in each of two separate preceding seasons in any major professional league.

Sven has broken BOTH of those barriers.

  5. I wouldn't be surprised if he did another year, but I guess it depends on what they think the team will look like next year. If the young players they brought in could be strong enough next year to compete then it could be enticing. But then again, helping the Comets to a Calder Cup could also be pretty enticing.

it could go either way at this point, as maine started to turn it around mid season after their plethora of greenhorns started to acclimate to the new league they entered. it might have been enough for Hutton to think there may be something special and worth sticking around for next season... which kinda sucks, because if they had continued their suckage down the stretch it would have been an instant decision and he'd probably already be in utica.

  6. Maine's season more than likely ended today with another loss. Now I guess we''ll soon see if he signs for the rest of the AHL season or decides to return. I wouldn't bet against him signing.

yeah, their season is done. hopefully he chooses to leave and signs soon. If I'm benning I'm calling him today to talk about his future.

  7. Blame Markstrom all you want but he's playing behind a defence with 2 NHL regulars (Hamhuis and Sbisa) and 4 AHL defencemen, not to mention or best defensive forward in Richardson is out as is Burrows.

    Thrown into the fire.

only the first goal can be chalked up to the fault of a defender, the other 2 were entirely stoppable and clearly his fault. we don't need to try to make excuses for his play, it was horrible. what he needs to do is shake it off and regroup for his next game, whenever that may be (hopefully against a team in tank mode, which should be a confidence booster)

  8. I can see Markstrom stringing together a couple shut outs

    This is his opportunity

I'd be surprised to see him get a single shutout at this point, never mind stringing them together.

Markstrom got pulled after 3 goals on 4 shots.

First one was a real nice shot after some terrible defence by Vancouver. Markstrom could've had it but it was an almost perfect shot.

Second one was just weird not really Markstroms fault at all. Puck bounced off the glass into the crease and a Shark somehow backhands it from his knees and facing the wrong way.

Third was off a really bad rebound (his one save) it looked like first two got into his head at that point.

I'd say a mix of bad luck and nerves got the best of him. Hopefully his next chance goes a lot better. I still believe this guy can do it at the NHL level. It's really odd he's flopped so hard so frequently in the NHL, maybe it's just a mental thing. Whatever it is he better get over it quick.

The first one was a horrible play/turnover by weber (surprise surprise), it would have been nice to see a save there, but it's certainly understandable that he didn't get that one.

The second one, however, was completely his fault. He should have caught the initial shot (it went off his glove for fracks sake), then he fell down on his butt when panicking after he flubbed that shot, instead of dropping to his knees, then when he recovered he failed to cover the bottom of the net while reaching for the puck (that's a basic). he had plenty of opportunities to prevent that goal, and it should have been stopped.

Then the third goal he basically passed it to couture with that fat juicy rebound right to his stick.

it was a complete disappointment of a game.

I'd give him the start against the tanking coyotes just to give him some confidence and see what happens. if he craps the bed again, then i don't think we'll have to worry about him clearing waivers next season when we send him down to utica again, and we certainly won't have to worry about what goalie we need to trade in this offseason.

  9. Calgarys reasoning for trading him, is that sven has started he wouldn't resign with them after this year. So they wanted to get something for him

yeah, he came right out and stated he won't resign with calgary. can't say i blame him after burkie's lambasting about him only paying well in one zone and such. guess he didn't have enough truculence for his liking.

  10. Avto kicks off their playoffs tomorrow morning and they're in tough against the top seed in the East.

Theoretically, Tryamkin's season could be done by this time next week so he could be looking at 6 months before he plays another game.

I wonder if they can loan him to Utica, the Canucks have his rights but he's not under contract.

    avelanch?

if he's under contract with his KHL team for another season after this (which i believe he is) then he won't be going to utica after his season is finished. I'm not sure when KHL season contracts are up (a set date or directly after their team's last game), but regardless, it'd be unlikely that he would come over for the remainder of the comets season even if it were his final season in the KHL. work permits, travel arrangements, etc. all take time, i'd be surprised to see him any earlier than the beginning of a new season.
