  1. If you want to see what may happen to Strikeforce, look no further than the WEC. They will keep the two seperate until existing fighter contracts with Strikeforce are done. Once that happens it will be "easier" for them to "clean house" and merge the two, or turn SF into the "minor league". Money talks and BS walks, whichever makes Zuffa the most money will be the direction they go, period.

  2. ^^^

They have them in Montreal, and there have been half a dozen or so at the River Rock.

They have them because their athletic commisions interpret the Criminal Code "different". It all stems from the CC law that lits sports that can be sactioned making the events legal. MMA is not "listed" and some (see Ontario) take it literally --> meaning MMA is illegal. The law they state is ANCIENT.

    Look at this BS.

    THE CANADIAN PRESS

TORONTO -- Ontario isn't ready to allow mixed martial arts fighting matches to be held in the province, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Wednesday even though events like the wildly popular Ultimate Fighting Championship could create new jobs.

While McGuinty has suggested in the past he was open to the idea, he now says bringing ultimate fighting to the province is not something he's ready to entertain.

"It's just not a priority for us at this point in time, we have higher priorities when it comes to developing those jobs and strengthening the economy," McGuinty said.

"We have other things on the go right now, and we'll stay focused on those, whether that's our tax reforms, stimulating the economy through investments in infrastructure, getting our children better opportunities at the outset."

Asked outright whether he found something in ultimate fighting offensive, McGuinty declined to elaborate, nor did he say if he was closing the door on the sport altogether.

Ontario has objected to the 1-on-1 fights in the past, saying they're too violent. McGuinty has also suggested that regulating the sport may be a better option than banning it and forcing its followers into underground fights, with no medical precautions and little training.

Despite a strong fan base in Ontario, MMA fighting has long been banned because it's considered to be "prize fighting" -- making it illegal under the federal Criminal Code.

It can be licensed by provincial athletics commissions however, something that has happened in various provinces and U.S. states.

MMA is one of the world's fastest-growing spectator sports and the UFC has claimed an event in Toronto could generate $4 million in tax revenue.

UFC president Dana White has called Canada the "Mecca" of his sport, citing healthy ticket sales to Canadians for shows around North America and elsewhere.

But for now, Ontario residents will have to continue to travel to Quebec or elsewhere if they want to watch the sport -- which combines elements of fighting sports such as boxing, wrestling, kick-boxing, karate and jiu-jitsu -- live.

Progressive Conservative Lisa MacLeod said the premier should make a final decision soon, since the possibility of bringing MMA to Ontario is an issue that has come up again and again.

"We're looking for any form of economic stimulus in this province and Mr. McGuinty doesn't have a credible plan for the economy and that might be one boost," she said.

"He says it's not a priority but he's got shifting priorities by the day."

What BS. I guess they are waiting until New York regulates MMA, then Ontario will bring UFC to the big smoke. All this because of an ancient law regarding "prize fighting". What a joke.

  4. Is the finale on in HD anywhere on Saturday? I can only find it on Spike.

I thought that Sportsnet was going to show it, but it probably won't be on as early as on spike (I'm guessing here since the showed the shows on sportsnet later in the evening that when spike aired them)

  5. Some of the Lesnar comments in this thread are hilarious.

Couture is 45 and past his prime. Brock also had more then 40 pounds on Couture. I'm not surprised, nor am I impressed that Brock won. The UFC is really trying to hype him up for marketing purposes. Some of you are buying right into what Dana White is selling.

Also did anyone get tickets to the GSP/Penn event in late January? The only tix I could find on ticketmaster were the 750$ ones and those are out of my price range.

I can see the Kimbo similarities with Brock, only difference is he has fought some REAL OPPOSITION. Overhyped, somewqhat, but somewhat legit.

  6. Don Taylor called the UFC a "trend" last night, kind of pissed me off. It was in regards to the daily poll, it was something like "Which Saturday sporting event are you looking forward to the most?" He said that the Lions game should be a no-brainer.

I don't give a sh!t about the CFL. Bush-league football played by a bunch of Americans that aren't good enough to make it in the NFL.

    /mini-rant

Really??, Garcia, Flutie, Moon. What about Cam Wake who will be in the NFL next year.

I hate how CFl hates keep pointing this out, but if you were a good player where would you want to play? In the league with BILLIONS of $$$$$$$ in revenue, or a smaller, second-tier league. If the CFL had SIMILAR revenue, then the calibre of players in the league WOULD GO UP. Compairing the CFL to the NFL is like compairing apples to oranges. They are both fruit, taste different, are different. If you are a REAL fruit lover, you appreciate them BOTH.

It's the same kind of argument between MMA and Boxing. Don't bash something just because you don't like it. There are plenty of people who like it, and enjoy watching it.

  7. Why arent they coming to Canada over and over like England? At least GSP headling is 10x better than a Bisping headline.

Probably because of HOCKEY. At least that is why they haven't made their way back to Montreal.

The UFC has said that they want to go back to Canada, but with Montreal playing at home just about every Saturday, Ontario being a bunch morons in banning MMA, and Van city banning MMA (no GM place, but ok in other parts of BC. In Oct. PG has a MMA fight card going on) that means Edmonton, Calgary, and MAYBE Winnipeg could host a UFC PPV. I do agree that they should/could have been in Canada by now.

  8. slice vs shamrock?????

    madness

Kimbo is their only real name, and EliteXC is having money trouble, cancelling their non-televised show. Too bad affliction didn't have EliteXC's TV deal with CBS, cause they would/could then take on UFC. Allfictions roster with elites CBS deal would be great.

I REALLY hope Kimbe loses, ending the hype for this guy.

  9. I think that the Affliction promotion is putting all their "eggs" in one basket. I wonder who the will have in their next card. If you are an MMA fan, you hope they can follow it up, but perhaps there will be a drop off. Perhaps thats the reason why they loaded up with heavyweights with name recognition. Great weekend though for MMA. Anything is better than that EliteXC crap that they will show on CBS

  10. Soo on final fighter did they ever get in trouble for trashing the house? I missed the end, but they did quite a number on it

    You mean Ultimate fighter??

No, They only get in trouble if they leave without permission, or fight each other at the house (previous seasons they were sent home)

  11. I like what Dan Wetzel, Yahoo! Sports wrote about the main event

    http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/news?slug=dw-k...o&type=lgns

What the main event lacked in quality it made up for in entertainment, unintentional or not. Here are my four favorite absurdly hysterical moments of the Kimbo-Colossus fight.

    4. When the fight was called, Colossus, the loser, tried to fight the ref for unfairly ending it. Kimbo, the winner, collapsed in exhaustion as many in the once pro-Kimbo crowd in Newark, N.J., turned on their guy. Not exactly a victory lap.

    3. The CBS announcing crew’s endless hyperbole reaching its pinnacle when one of them compared Kimbo to Tiger Woods.

This would be applicable if Tiger had gained fame hitting trick shots in putt putt and then was invited to a second rate club championship which CBS was conned into televising. He then shot a final round 124, after which he was declared the winner anyway.

    2. The judges. Kimbo spent most of the second round getting his skull hit and thanking the heavens that Colossus could only manage weak punches and elbows. Anyone else and this ends ugly. Even with Colossus, the fight could have been called (ha) in this undeniably terrible round for Kimbo.

Naturally, one of the “impartial judges” scored the round in his favor anyway. If this had gone to decision, is there any doubt at least one of the judges would have scored the three-round fight for Kimbo, five rounds to zero?

    1. The Ear. What, you’ve seen an ear like that before? When everyone predicted this would be a freak show, no one thought the Colossus would take it to heart. His cauliflower ear was massive, this huge ball of blood and puss hanging off his head.

Ah, didn’t anyone think to mention he might want to drain that thing before Kimbo whacks him upside the head and makes it explode? Which, of course, happened.

Organizations like the UFC have been trying to break the stereotype that MMA is human cockfighting, something they were responsible for during the iniatial introduction of the sport in the early 90's, and this last EliteXC debacle undid a lot of that work. PLEASE CBS, get rid of the freakshow and get a real MMA card to showcase on network TV.

  12. So apparently, there's a video out there that kinda shows just how flawed and possibly "fixed" that Kimbo fight was over the weekend. It breaks it down in detail. I just CAN'T FIND IT!!!!

Pfize.... get to work, champ! :)

Also, after watching Ultimate Liddell, I've finally become a fan of him. He's too nice a guy to not like.

Kimbo's fight wasn't the only fight that was flawed on Saturday night.

Thumb in the eye, less than a minute or two later -> stop the fight cause he can't see. They didn't even give him his 5 minutes to recover. What BS.

Thank got for the Faber / Pulver fight on Sunday. Faber is a beast at 145, but I don't think he could do much against UFC 155 champ BJ
