  1. Did anyone see the countdown show on Sportsnet last night for the GSP vs Penn match? I found it interesting especially the difference in training methods between the two camps.

Yeah its pretty cool. 2 different seasons. One guy training in the summer, one guy training in the winter. One dude is humble the other is cocky.

With that said I hope Georges beats him down. I hope BJ gasses and then GSP beats the living crap out of him.

  2. zing! haha

whats Chuck's plan going to be against Shogun?

oh right, the same plan hes ever had.

    circle... circle..... circle.... punch!

    circle... circle..... circle.... punch!

    circle... circle..... circle.... punch!

  3. How about we ask an MMA fighter to put that choke on another MMA fighter. Not everyday you see one tap out when it isn't fully locked.

I think the dude just wanted to sound hardcore.

Its like in Canucks talk when someone says ahh Luongo should have stopped that.

and someone says "i'd like to see you stop a shot going 100km/hr"

  4. You've obviously never trained bjj on the mat because that is only something a keyboard warrior would say.

Hit up Dynamic MMA or Universal MMA and ask one of the guys to put a guillotine choke on you and see how this "basic choke" feels when it wasn't "fully applied."

I guaran-damn-tee you that you'll change your tone right away.

yup no actually you are right after checking out the video again. He did have the guillotine in deep but I think Denis should have anticipated that move. Whenever guys go in for the shot, the other guy will establish take down defence posture and go for the guillotine. I mean Denis is a black belt here.

but yeah when i first saw it, it looked like he didnt have the arm fully in, it looked like it was only half, but after checking it out again on mmatko it was in deep.

keyboard warrior? you post on sherdog huh? or lurk there. they use that word too much when debating mma.

Did you have anything to say about today's UFC as well or you just wanted to sound hardcore in a post?

  5. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kaaaaaaaaaaaaaangggggggggggggggggggg what the hell!!!!!!!

how did he gas out after only 1 round? hes been training with gsp for a year now. why did he tap to a basic choke when the choke hadn't been fully applied yet? beaten by a can.... ahhhhhhh.. and i was hoping he would rep canada but he brought just the Korean flag :(

    that was very dissapointing.

and coleman vs rua... wow.. were they fighting underwater? both of them were moving so slow and couldnt do anything. It was like we were watching the fight in slowmotion. I thought it was a quick stoppage. Coleman got dropped but seriously there was 30 more seconds. Coleman was just going to hold on to shoguns leg while shogun took a nap.

People are seriously questioning fighters from Pride. They all seem to gas out in a round or 2. I think its because they've never had to outwrestle their opponent. They were always use to a Kickboxing style match Japanese MMA had.

And that last fight Hendo vs Franklin should have been a 5 rounder. 3 round main events prove nothing. Franklin was coming on strong and hendo seems to be gassing but it was too late. If it went longer I think Franklin would have won. But i saw it 2-1 henderson too but nothing special. No one was really rocked and the mistaken headbut and then finger in eye seems to ruin the fight a bit.

Did i hear that right? Rampage jackson vs Keith Jardine? So Rampage's big win over Wanderlei gets him a match with the guy that Wanderlei just beat? Did rampage just go up or down the ladder with that Wanderlei win??

Well lets hope next weeks Fedor vs Arlovski card is good because UFC 93 sucked the big one. Coleman vs Shogun was too hilarious. It felt like they were sleep fighting. I think Shogun should be put on the undercard next fight because his last 2 fights have been pure suckage.

  6. Not going to be able to catch the Affliction card. :(

I'm counting on a blow by blow on CDC. Maybe will see tomorrow's fight though, the early start vexes me though.

theres always internet streams to watch it on..

What does Anderson Silva walk around at? (weight)

    220. He said it in the irvin vs silva post conference. He needs to start fighting guys his own size.

  7. I'm actually getting pretty damn psyched for the Franklin/Hendo match. Don't really know who to pick. I'm also psyched to see Denis debut!! And we're only TWO WEEKS away from GSP/BJ. Chills man!!

On another note, how bad does UFC 97 look in Montreal? Anderson vs Thales Leites?? This may be the worst main event in recent memory, even worse than Anderson/Cote or Hughes/Alves.

UFC 96 has a pretty weak looking card so far as well.... Carwin/Gonzaga?? Is that the main event?

yeah im pysched for 3 solid cards.

i think im anticipating coleman vs shogun the most for the next fight. But hendo vs franklin should be damn fun too.

I would be more hyped about penn/gsp but Arlovski vs Fedor is going to be crazy too. I hope Arlovski wins cause im going for the underdog here. I think someone needs to capatalize on the way fedor punches. Punching from the outside leaves him open and most people dont seem to have the skill to throw a good combination at him. We've seen that crocop backs off too much when in pressure. I hope Arlovski goes in the pocket and throws a haymaker that connects.

You know whats going to make Anderson Silva vs Leities suck even more ontop of the fact that Thales is a can, is the commentating. Where Anderson will come into the ring as some mma god, be fighting who they hype as the greatest middleweight contender in Thales and then after Anderson knocks him out joe and goldie will praise how awesome the fight was and how Anderson ko'ing a can was the greatest thing they ever witnessed like the Cote fight.

  8. Afflicition has done a super crappy job of hyping up a ppv of a great fight with Fedor/Arlovski. The sad thing is that Arlovski is actually doing the hype himself on his youtube channel.

So instead of waiting for a UFC Countdown type of show for affliction it appears he makes his own countdown show and uploads it to his youtube account. So here it is: Arlovski getting ready for Fedor. Behind the scenes:

Andrei watching videos of Fedor at his house and writing down notes

  9. i havent decided where im going to watch affliction yet as im looking forward to seeing Dennis Kang fight this saturday first. Then the week after that its Arlovski/Fedor, Then the week after that its Penn vs GSP. 3 solid back to back weeks of MMA!

Every UFC, Dana White has some video blogs he does leading up to the fights. They show you some behind the scenes on what is occuring and Dana patting himself on the back on how rich he is by spending money and showing the world. So here is the 2 for UFC 93.

    this is from Saturday:

    from yesterday

this is the UFC channel if you want to keep up to date leading up to ufc93.

  11. Hey Pfizer. You posted an average of 440 000. But the error is you are only seeing American PPV's in that

Here is Meltzer's article on PPV rates and what the UFC made last year from jan 6

They have plenty of money and plenty of money left over. This doesn't include dvd sales. Tv show rights. So on and so Forth. This doesn't even factor in international PPV buy rates. But regardless of that fact. There is Plenty of money even after taxes.

With one event left on the calendar, the Dec. 27 UFC 92 event from Las Vegas, the company is estimated at selling 5,315,000 pay-per-view orders totaling $237.9 million, already handily beating their marks in the $220-225 million range of 2006 and 2007.

Yeah 5 million is the total buys for 2008. The first show in January was UFC 80. The last show in 2008 was UFC 92. Thats 12 UFC's. 5 million divided by 12 = 416 666 buys on average. They were on pace for 420 000 like i showed up top. But a lot of that has to do with the company expanding, more viewers and the huge amount of people Brock Lesnar brings in. UFC 91 did almost more buys than Tito Vs Chuck. And Brock is not a real Mixed martial artists yet.

The list that i got was from InsideMMA hoted by Bas. They get their information i believe from Dave Meltzer too and his findings on wrestling observer and his column on yahoo. I think they are talking total as well.

In England they dont use the PPV system. They use Santanta sports. They pay a monthly fee to get all type of sports. North America is different.

But like i said before i do think the fighters deserve more money especially with Dana Driving around in his ferrari and guys on the low end making like $7 0000. And yeah we didnt factor everything like DVD sales where the fighters i dont think get a cut, and the promotional money they receeiver from harley davidson, miller lite or whatever. But also in UFC's defence they are trying to reinvest the money back into the company and make it global. I think the pay will get higher and higher as georges st pierre said in an interview. I think the company should go public with their earning so everyone can get a better insight. At the moment we are all kind of guessing who is getting paid what because even the fighters dont want to tell you how much they make.

I agree that the boxing model is Garbage. Completely But it's still Better than UFC. Independent contractors able to fight where they want versus Being controlled by an entity that has no Official Rankings. This is why in the Last 9 years we have yet to see the Two top heavy weights in the world fight. That is a joke. As for Soccer. I would prefer that system completely. I am not saying that fighters should be capped or uncapped. I would prefer they make more money. But having a major governing body that reigns in all the promotions is a good idea. As for fight fixing. I watched Couture/Lesnar. I am pretty sure that fight was a complete job.

I think Couture can not handle Brock. Couture is getting old. Same with Noguiera hes taken one too many shots. He looked horrible in that match. Couture is up and down. The only reason why he wanted to fight brock first was to get paid. He knew if he fought Big Nog he would lose and he wouldnt make much money. Because I mean who wants to see Fedor vs Couture now? Not that i ever really did because I always though Fedor was a true heavyweight champion while Couture was just the the king in a weak HW division. Its tougher to fix a fight in UFC because the refs are not the UFC. They belong to the Nevada State Atheltic Comission. In Japan that fight is not sanctioned so they can do what they want. Tell their refs to work the fight, tell the fighters etc.

Because this part really needed to be quoted.... In North America UFC is just an event.

It's because you understand Pfizer even though we don't totally agree. That I enjoy reading your posts. :)

Since you added a video I'm adding one aswell. :)

haha  I guess we will have to just disagree on this. I think if you fix the matches, and arent sanctioned as a sport, dont care who wins or loses like Pride did you are an event.

If a governing body referees your show, and winning and losing are important then you have a sport.

Thanks yeah the debate is fun. I enjoy reading almost everyone's posts here. Well done ole chap.

  12. That was seriously the coolest intro for a show EVER!! My god, if only the UFC could do something like that. Spend a little cash, ya know?

Agreed. That song was incredibly lame, and old galdiator guy is riduculous now. It's 2009, time for a change.

whoops sorry missed your post yesterday. Yeah UFC should put in more money for their intros. I mean if they dont like the all out opening, atleast change up the gladiator and the talking at the start.

  13. Pride only got into financial trouble when Fuji Broadcasting pulled out of their Television deal Because of the Yakuza. I don't think you realize just how much money the UFC makes for a PPV and what it pays out.

The last show had a buy rate of 2.5 million. Let's conservatively say they make 20 dollars from 39 dollar ppv. And I am guessing that is low. and the HD is 49 bucks

2.5 million x 20 = 50 million bucks. They probably paid out less than 3 million to the fighters. They could afford better Cards. They just have so many people at the trough drinking the Kool aid it's ridiculous. even at a 500 000 buy rate they still make 10 million at 20 bucks. Pride was a television driven show, not PPV driven. Once they lost television they were sunk.

you forgot to add them getting taxed.

UFC got 440 000 ppv buys in 2007. (2008 figures not out yet but they were averaging 420 000 in july i think)

  14. You are pointing out what is wrong with UFC again. They water down the fights so it will be acceptable to the WWE audience. And that is what it has become. The edgier WWE. Once again I don't care where the fights are fought. The PPV carriers had no problem putting pride on PPV during the same time that the UFC was on PPV. Fox sports in the states still puts on the old Pride fighting shows. It's not about violence with PPV it's about money. Don't get me wrong. There are some good fighters and some good fights in the UFC. But you can pretty much count them on one finger per show these days. The last show was good. But the star power for that show was the average show in Pride.

I think the difference for me is that I care about the fighters. I dont want them to die for my entertainment. I want them to fight again like a real competition. Not like UFC 1 where everything goes including nut shots.

Just because no one died in Pride doesnt mean you can continue to do it. The NSAC is there for that very purpose so its not human cockfighting and is an actual sport. If Wanderlei killed someone with head stomp, it would have given pride a black mark and fox wouldnt even show it.

Nothing happened in the past. That doesnt mean it wont in the future.

The UFC crowd is nothing like the WWE. Its not an edgier WWE. There is a huge difference between FAKE fighting and REAL fighting.

The UFC waters down its shows so it can have more shows. The way pride ran its business is the reason it continued to lose money. Thats why pride is here no longer. Remember if you have a lot of stars in each show, you have to pay them a lot of money. If they all get PPV revenues then you are left with nothing. You can have 1 great UFC every 2 months or you can have 4 medium ufcs in 2 months. Pride business strategy was horrible.

If Pride ran their show like an actual business and not some circus side show they would still be here today. That on top of accusations the Yakuza (Japanese Gang) was helping run the show.

  15. I honestly don't care at all about fighters safety to tell you the truth. If they are willing to get in the ring they should be willing to get hurt. Lay and Pray is the worst fighting ever. I prefer a good submission or a Knockout than watching two guys push each other into the Cage. Jamming a guys head into the corner and then just staring at him is the most useless fighting. Pull them to the center and Fight. Its not Ultimate Pushing. It's fighting. The other thing that was fantastic with Pride was the cards. You run away. Point against. two points against. Fight over and you lose.

If a fighter in MMA dies you can pretty much kiss MMA ever coming to Canada goodbye or it ever getting real popular in America.

I think if someone dies PPV companies might refuse to carry it like they did in the early 90's when UFC was going bankrupt. They said it was too violent and the politicans were trying to get it banned.

  16. Rather than elaborate openings and entrances that mirror pro-wrestling (this is why Dana is keeping away from ridiculous entrances, mark my words) I'd rather see the UFC spend some money on a real talented video producer. The guys who work in video production for the WWE are some of the best in the business with regards to making exciting videos to hype up matches/events and show opening graphics/credits. Rather than a stupid opening with a lame song featuring some random dude dressed as a faggy gladiator, they should get an industry professional, someone experienced in post production for sports, and create an entirely new image with their broadcasts. It would go a long way as far as enjoying the show goes.

I agree on why they are not using the elaborate openings. He wants to keep it like boxing as he was a amateur boxer before.

I still like the pride opening more though because it was like a martial arts competition.

UFC has some great design work on their websites and on UFC unleashed. Things are revamped there. When the VS screen comes up you have new graphics and the UFC logo is lighted and everything but for some reason on the actual broadcast they go back to the crappy 1990's flashing lighbulbs design... as if light bulbs flashing is some great design work that needs to be kept. Their VS screen is the old crappy version.

And Pride is what it is because they were formed by guys that owned wrestling i think.. Pancrease and such so they took this entertainment opening. I guess there are people on both sides.

It seems like they dont want to change the brand. EVen fighters have said that gladiator in the beginning sickens them. Its just so low budget.

There are guys in UFC that keep their openings but the UFC does not show them like Akhiro Gono

    his entrance in pride:

his entrance in ufc. .. not the same effect hah.

I prefer the grande opening and hate the low budget ufc opening and some people want to see guys just walk into the octagon and no real opening to the show. The way i see it even if some UFCS suck which they do at least we saw some interesting opening even if the fight itself sucked.

  17. Yeah I have seen a lot of K-1's aswell as I think all the K-1 Heroes which were K-1 and Pride holding shows together. And the K-1 legends shows were good aswell.

I prefer a restart than having someone pushed into the cage. Why don't they just give one guy a bat while they are at it. The Cage is used as a weapon. The only weapons that should be allowed is your own Body. If your strategy is to push a guy into the fence tells me your ability is not how well you fight. That is why Wrestlers rarely stood a chance in Pride. They were conditioned to not win the fight but rather to draw it out.

I think its great. I like that the cage allows a fight to keep going like a real fight. Its much more safer too. Its the same reason Mirko Cro Cop lost in the UFC. You had lay n pray in pride as well though. Gracie vs Sakuraba was a 1 1/2 hour fight!

but i think UFC has changed now where if you were on the ground and not doing enough they will stand you back up. I think its much better than in pride where you had wrestlers going in to tackle a guy, he would move and the wrestler would fall out.

If Georges St pierre everr fought in Pride the amount of times he would fall out of the ring would be crazy. He would shoot for a takedown the other guy would fall back and they would go through the ropes, and then a restart.

  18. You mentioned pretty much everything I hate about UFC. Lay and pray. The ring made for much better tv viewing Kicks to the head stomps to the head knees to the head on the ground. There were weight classes. That was why Henderson silva and Emelianenko gomi could all be title holders. But if you wanted to fight out of your class you could do that too, just not for a belt. I prefer to see fights instead of rules or someone just pushing a guy into a fence. Pride was everything that the UFC isn't. It was exciting.

The weight classes were there but the fighters were all over the place like Sakuraba, Minowa, Wanderlei, Ninja Rua. I like the ground war a lot something pride kind of lacked. UFC will let the guys up if it gets too boring. If you see the early prides like Mark Kerr it became too rediculous when his opponents got scared of him and would intentionally fall through the ropes so they could get back in and get position.

I liked the face to face stare downs in pride though. Those were intense.

But if you dont care for ground wars that much then you should watch K-1. Pure punching and kicking. More stand up action.

Same with affliction. Too many fights were ruins with the constant restarts because they were falling off the edge, and guys constantly falling out of the ring through the ropes.

  19. really? I love them both.

But the UFC octagon is far superior than the Pride Ring. I hate afflicition for doing it too. Too often you see guys fall through the ropes or that annoying restarting pride had. I love UFC for keeping the action going. If they hit the fence they keep going. No one falls out or gets cornered.

Weight classes are better too because they dont harm the competitor in the long run. After that kick by cro cop Wanderlei was never the same. He keeps getting knocked out now. And i think the soccer kicks are too dangerous too. You could sersiously hurt a guy's head like that. Like if the head is stationary and someone like cro cops lets it fly.

on another note I think ufc elbows should be left out. Because it causes too much blood and it stops the fight even though the guy is still ready to fight. You get these deep cuts.

But Pride production values were sooo much better than UFC. UFC has no opening. Its just crappy metal music and then a guy walks out of his locker room. When you saw a pride opening it felt like you were watching someone of epic proportions. When you see a pride opening and then a UFC, the UFC looks like some low budget start up business.

edit: I thought affliction would have a pride opening but they too are going for that stupid heavy metal approach. When are they going to get it through their heads that MMA viewers arent into heavy metal. They want ozzy ozbourne to perform and some other metal bands inbetween fights? err no.. and that crappy ring is being used again.
