Ship out Beauviller + Garland with 1m retained on each and get some draft picks in return. Beauvillier at 3 million will look good to a lot of teams, Garland at 3.9 looks good as well.

After replacing them in the lineup with two ELC guys (Podkolzin and Hoglander) we're looking at 4.2m in cap space that opens up.

Use the cap space to get a 3C that can kill penalties (BARBASHEV)

Bring back MOTTE. Such a good penalty killer, a great 4th liner, and weirdly awesome in shootouts. #1 PK duo is now Barbashev-Motte.

    Mikheyev-Petey-Kuzmenko

    Boeser-Miller-Hoglander

    Podkolzin-Barbashev-Joshua

    Studnicka-Aman-Motte

    Hughes-Bear

    OEL-Hronek

    Wolanin-Myers

Then next year, when Myers salary falls off, we see how OEL did. If he bounced back well enough to play on the 2nd pair, great. If not, buy him out at that point, and go after a defenseman more in the vein of Gavrikov. And use Myers savings to beef up the bottom-6 even more.

does mean garland has been traded and his salary space will be enough to pay for hoglander, barbashev, motte and bear and the 1.5 mil that we are  over the cap for next year?

    Depends.

By trading Myers the Canucks can get cap space and thereby getting a player that they want at the start of the season.  The goal is to make the playoffs.  If Canucks are trading Myers at the trade deadline, pretty much means they are out of the playoff picture.

So what would you rather have?  Possibly playoffs or a draft pick?

if they trade myers after his bonus is paid, they save 1 mil, which might be enough to sign bear.

  3. if i'm allvin and i've read the reaction of the fans, i'm stumped. i'ld have to let kuzmenko, bear and fa's walk and still trim 2 mil more off my cap. i read people don't want buyouts; retaining on trades; not sweetening with more than with 3rd or 4th picks and only want players they deem expendable to be traded.

sounds like fantasy island. the plane!

Chicago absolutely has space for deadweight contracts but I'm not sure if Chicago actually wants to fill their cap with that.  We certainly couldn't demand anything decent in return.  Look at it this way - why would Chicago give anything up to get Myers when they can simply throw $3.5 million to a bottom pairing D-man in free agency?  It would be a waste of assets.

What's clear is that Vancouver doesn't want picks in return.  They want players.  So Garland for or Boeser or Myers for picks is highly unlikely, especially for a rebuilding team that can trade those future prospects when they get competitive.

if allvin gets a 2nd rounder, he could use that pick to move another bad contract, or using it to trade for a team need.

I disagree. PLD is a force. I’d take him over Ehlers and Cole Perfetti. Montreal took size last year. It still matters. Even Tocchet talked about wanting to get bigger. I’m old enough to remember when Ryan Reaves destroyed Colorado all by himself. That wasn’t too long ago was it?

Size isn’t as important as it used to be but you are not winning the cup with 18 smurfs in your lineup.

i once said, give me a team with 18 stan smyls on it and i'll win you a stanley cup. stan wasn't big but he played much bigger. i think that line worked because it had the right mix on it. gradin as a great playmaker and scorer and one punch fraser to handle the corner work and toughness. smyl wasn't much of a fighter but he never back down from anyone.

I agree.  We aren't getting both of them.  Lafreniere may be on the block as he's an RFA and wants $3 million+ and also he would be on their 3rd line behind Panarin and Kreider.

11 OA for Lafreniere, Goodrow and their 2024 2nd.  I'm not sold on Othman and not sure where he would fit if we got Laff.  I'd use Hoglander as a sweetener to move out Garland...

and how much over the cap does that put us? imo they have to clear 10mil to be cap compliant next season and maybe sign a 3c and a stay at home d man.

how many trades will it take to clear 10 mil? can it be done without buyouts?

    Smithers Joe…

    I quoted you, but ikd?

Should the Canucks trade Hughes for a bigger d man?

    Scott Niedmeyer. Sp?

    Nuff said.

The Devils got Scott Stevens to play with Scott Niedmeyer and their dynasty ended when Neidmeyer went to Anaheim.

then the ducks got Pronger to play with Scott.

The Hawks kept Keith and when he left they were over too.

I would think trading Hughes would be self lobotomy.

i agree, i wouldn't trade him. i asked that question to those who think ASP is too small for canucks.

Well there aren't too many players like Hughes or Makar in the NHL, but I believe both Minnetian and Gulyayev have higher upside than Sandin-Pellikka. Minnetian has some bugs to work out with his 360 degree skating, but the potential is there for a gamebreaker. Not saying I think he'll  be picked as high as I have him ranked; I'm sure he'll go second round, maybe even third, but if a team is patient and brings him along the right way, he could end up being the best defenseman out of the draft.

Same for Gulyayev. He likely goes quite a bit earlier than Minnetian but will be interesting to see what happens with all the Russians this year. Last year Miroshnichenko and Yurov both went at least 10-15 spots later than where they should have gone.

I don't put too much focus now days on the defensive prowess of these small defense prospects. They're all going to struggle with the strength of NHL players just the same. Minnetian is in a bit of a different category than the other two in that he's been known to have a physical edge and to step up and throw some pretty big open-ice hits. But generally speaking for these smaller D, being able to retrieve pucks, be highly evasive and make zone exits with near-perfect success rates is much more important to me. Sandin-Pellikka is great at making exits as part of a team structure and he doesn't turn over the puck easily, but for a player to have that extra gear and the ability to take over and find a way to escape almost any kind of pressure is a rare skill that I don't quite see that from any other defensemen in this draft. Minnetian, ASP and some others are great at moving the puck through the neutral zone, but they just don't have that next level of escapability in their own zone that Gulyayev has.

so, the caucks should trade hughes for a bigger, tougher d man?

Hmmm, I dunno, Juolevi was a pretty massive mistake. Almost as bad as taking Jake over Larkin.

juolevi looked awesome in the world junior tourney. i thought he would be a good nhl'er. jake was local and had all the tools. the knock on jake was his hockey sense. it was a gamble that didn't work. hindsight is always perfect. i've made some rotten picks on players too.

so confusing. they say this is a deep draft, yet every time somebody mentioned a player, others put the players down like they are only second round worthy.

even the scouts that know these players the best can't seem to see players the same way. it sounds like this is a poor draft class. why is a good class of draftees if we'll be dissapointed if we get our pick at 11?

posters here make me feel that we'ld be better off to trade the pick or lump the pick with boeser for cap relief.

  12. i believe that, if JR and PA can rid the team of some bulging cap space, they could successfully retool this team into a playoff team. hopefully they can find a way. i think they would try and get gavrikov as our #2 left d-man and a good 3c, and one more stay at home d-man. that would be a home run for this year. i wish them luck. like to know if johansson rd can make this team next season?

Rathbone and McDonough are best friends.  They are from Massachusetts.  I'm sure they would both love to go to Boston and play together.  Rathbone is waiver eligible next season.  Akito Hirose has basically taken his place on the big club.  I don't see any room for Rathbone in Vancouver next year, and we will lose him on waivers.  McDonough is interesting, but he looks slow out there and we need to be able to fit Hoglander on the team next year, so there really isn't a spot for him on the big club in the immediate future.  Tocchet wants to acquire some big, heavy guys who play a north/south game.  Boston has a good one.

    To Vancouver:

    Trent Frederic

    Ryan Mast

    To Boston:

    Jack Rathbone

    Aidan McDonough

Frederic gives us a big, heavy player who can also drop the gloves with heavyweights.  We can try and play him in the top 6.  He has scored 16 goals this year in a breakout season at 25.  There is some upside there.  Former 1st round pick.  At the very least he can anchor our 3rd line and bring some beef up front.  He's a good skater too.  Mast is a big and mobile RHD, 6'4" and 212 pounds.  He can go to Abby next season.  Mast is a 6th round pick, McDonough is a 7th round pick, so they kind of balance each other out and we get a player in a need position.  Boston may bite on this deal to bring Rathbone and McDonough back home together...

    Kuzmenko     Pettersson      Mikheyev

    Frederic        Miller               Boeser

    Podkolzin      Bjugstad        Kravtsov/Hoglander

    Joshua          Aman              Hathaway

    PDG

We add Frederic and Bjugstad and Hathaway and all of a sudden we have a much bigger and heavier team.  Rick Tocchet hockey can finally be played...

you forgot to move out one of our burdensome contracts. add garland sent out and lohrei coming back and consimate the transaction.
