Is Seth the minute munching partner for Quinn?  Cost just might be too high though, and something we can’t afford.  What’s our strongest position, where we can afford to give up elite young talent?

Depends on who you consider to be the Canucks "elite young talent".

I like the idea. A Hughes-Jones pairing would be awesome.

But that trade is bad for them. We add a lot

I'd love to see that pairing as well. Hughes needs a solid RD to clean-up his mistakes. Preferably someone around age 25. But, it won't be Jones.

Uh - Sutter, Beagle and Gaudette are all right-handed....

And it isn't determined yet where Miller will play - whether that's on EP's wing - or whether he takes draws and defensive responsibities on that line to lighten the impact on EP.

Regardless, it doesn't really matter much.  The thing is - they have a right handed sniper in Boeser for that line - so I'm not sure why it would matter much, if at all.

You’re actually counting on “franchise cornerstone” (GMJB-speak) Brandon Sutter to be healthy enough to make a contribution and/or finish the season as a Canuck? Yikes! That’s setting the bar pretty low, bud. And, you really see Gaudette centering the 3rd line next year? You’re sure this is a playoff team if he is? I’m not.

I was actually commenting on our fledgling young core / leadership group not being similar in personality to Subban.

Adding him does risk rocking the boat. While I’m confident we’re moving forward, having personalities clash in the locker room is the last thing this club needs right now, especially if we start losing.

One of the major bonuses to JB’s tenure here as GM is how solid the room appears to be.

I think he pursued Subban anyways and his level of play likely outweighed any locker room risk, but it’s still a valid point that he did come with a bit of concern from that lens.

I think “big personality” types are great on winning teams with established leadership groups.  They become a risk when things go sour.  (Or they jump ship like Kesler.)

What proof do you have that it was Subban-as-locker-room-risk that ultimately drove GMJB in another direction? You don’t think cap hit had anything to do with that? Especially since they’re already overpaying Tanev and just re-upped with Edler.

And, exactly what Kesler-like ship-jumping skills has Subban ever displayed? His refusal to sign an offer sheet with another squad while he was with MTL wasn’t sincere?

Well considering TG just said he will play with EP and Boeser, as long as he's healthy he'll be a lock for 50 points at the minimum.

If Miller's going to be at LW, I hope that means Baertschi is on his way out then. Otherwise, they've got no balance at C, with 3 lefties and 1 RH on the 4th line. Assuming Gaudette is in the press box or traded, of course.

This is a trade that wouldnt have happened if teams weren't scared that the cap is going down (in terms of the return). See the Marleau trade

Let's count the number of armchair hockey scouts in this forum who swear it happened because of Subban's "locker room presence" and "big personality" or whatever else they can come up with.

I like PK as well but that’s a good point.  We aren’t good/established enough to take on a potential distraction like that just yet, especially since he really doesn’t fit the current group.

Subban's not "hard working" enough for you? If he's "a potential distraction", doesn't that actually say far more about the mindset and focus of whoever allows themselves to be distracted by him than it does about him

And, when you can name me who amongst the current crop of Canucks defencemen that is "good/established enough" at his level, you be sure to get back to me. Your mentality is exactly why this franchise and, in part, its fanbase (CDC'rs) will never win a Stanley Cup: too busy and concerned with filling out the roster with good little boys whom you can bring home to meet the grandparents. Anyone who is outside of that is considered "a potential distraction" whom CDC'rs hope lands elsewhere if/when said player becomes available. But, hey, have fun rooting for Tanev again next season in between the inevitable IR stints. Maybe Hutton will toss your kid a stick, too.

I wonder if Vancouver was one of the other teams involved. Canucks needed a good D man way more than a top 6 forward.

Doubt it. If GMJB supposedly wasn't all-in on acquiring him from MTL if it meant having to part with Tanev, I can't see that having changed now. Would've been sweet to have him paired with Hughes, though.

    3) The Canucks are relatively deep down the middle, but are extremely anemic on their right side defense.

    4) In order to receive something of value, you have to give something of value.  Guys like Adam Gaudette and Tyler Madden have value and so it’s very conceivable that trading either of these guys would be able to land you a good defensive prospect.

That was my line of thinking here.

    3) Acquiring Subban and re-signing Schenn would fix that. I'd feel a lot more confident with the RHD core with Stecher at #2 between those other two.

    4) As it pertains to your previous point, it's likely too late for GMJB to really acquire anything of Subban's talent in exchange for Tanev, who I feel should've been moved 2-3 years ago and replaced by a legitimate #1RHD. But, I'm not in favour of moving Gaudette in order to achieve that.

Yeah that is a fair point. If Demko can continue to improve and Markstrom has decent value this year maybe it is worth moving him at/before the deadline to a playoff team.

What kind of value do you think these two goalies have currently? Could Markstrom get us a late first round pick or is that too hopeful?

But, does Demko "continue to improve" as a backup or 1A in Vancouver? Or, as a solid #1 (hopefully) at Utica? I'm assuming he still is AHL-eligible.

  11. I'd love to see GMJB pull off a game-changing trade acquisition or UFA signing this summer. But, not one that includes Matt Duchene. Heck of a player, mostly, but, I'd like to see some L/R balance at the C position, and the squad is already set from the left side there. I'd change my tune if he were a righty, though. But, I'd definitely like to see Gaudette lock down that #3 C spot.

You were shown a games played comparison and ignored that and now want to keep on about it so there you go.  You have clearly made up your mind and even in the face of data don't agree so I guess on this topic, discussion closed.   You don't think he is worth much.   Lucky for Canucks, most of NHL likely disagrees.   :)

No, there YOU go. Along with the rest of the "pro-Tanev analytics geeks" I referred to earlier. Apparently you're under the assumption that this is the first season I've ever watched him play. If my mind is made up, I can assure you it goes far beyond whatever data you're capable of spewing out to make your case about the guy. I'm a firm believer that that sort of thing is more for those who don't pass the eyeball test. I'm not convinced Tanev does. Certainly not with regards to him being one of the league's "premiere shutdown defencemen" (CDC'r quote) who'll command "a king's ransom" (another CDC'r quote) in return trade value.

We agree on one thing: I don't think he's worth (that) much.

We disagree on whether or not the rest (or, "most", as you put it) of the NHL agrees.

Maybe it has something to do with when they signed their last contracts, and how good they were playing at the time they signed their last contracts?

Couldn't be that. At no point in their respective careers has Chris Tanev ever rated higher nor outperformed John Carlson. I'll never believe that.
