Booth did lack effort. Remember his wonderful comeback where virtually had nothing on the stats sheet other than ice time? Remember all of the half assed games he played in late October/November even before his injury where he became virtually a non-factor? Getting his legs back helped, but you can see he plays with a lot more tenacity, not just on open ice but also along the boards.
Schroeder = example of a guy who persevered despite being bounced around and didn't need to be coddled like that teddy bear Kassian to get his ass in gear, produce, and EARN his ice time. Very much related to the topic.
3 coaches matter. At that point, it is on the PLAYER not just the coach. Torts DID give Kassian a chance throughout October/early November but Kassian's play continued to be just as bad. When the team started losing and could barely score a single goal he started benching Kass because he became a liability in his eyes. The way Kassian plays in his end makes any defensive-minded coach pull their hair out and it's not a surprise seeing him benched for floating, bad giveaways, lack of intensity, and trying to be too cute with the puck. Kassian must listen and PUT what he is being told into practice (which he hasn't been doing) if he wants to see ice time.
