  1. Wrong...This whole Aqualini interfering fiasco was started by the Pittsburgh media,it didn't happen....The organization as a whole turned down the deal (Sutter,1st,3rd....obviously) ...there was no debate on that......The rest of your post is one dimensional Gillis hate, there's lots of rebuttals elsewhere on this forum for that.

This whole deal where any form of criticism gets interpreted as something personal needs to stop.

I feel Ive been more then fair. I will readily admit Gillis did a great job building this team and deserves a lot of credit, a lot more then Burke and also a lot more then many seem willing to give.

As he deserved praise then, he deserves criticism now. Plenty of it.

  2. And yet there was Fransesco Aqulini sitting in the War Room today. I personally think Fransesco's ego is too big to realize he is part of the problem.

A good owner just stays out of the way in terms of day to day operations. I don't think any real qualified GM would want to work under Francesco Aquilini right now. He needs a puppet and Gillis is a puppet.

To repeat what I said, this is the only time ownership has interfered with anything I can remember.

Im assuming its because Gillis no longer has the authority to make trades because hes basically done here already.

Gillis was basically the envy of GMs because of how much autonomy he had and the resources that were at his disposal.

Obviously there is only so much the Aquilinis will tolerate; Gillis botched the Hodgson thing, botched the goaltending situation last year, and utterly botched the coaching change/reset.

Im guessing this Luongo thing was the last straw and he could no longer be trusted to make any decisions, namely the Kesler deal.

  3. Gillis is not an adequate GM but he isn't the real problem here.

According to Team 1040 meddlesome ownership is at play here too. They apparently refused to sign off on any Kesler trade because they want to make the playoffs. I have said before and will say it again, the dysfunctional nature of the Vancouver Canucks begins with ownership. The Aqulini's had a heavy hand in the offseason trade of Schneider instead of Luongo and now they have reportedly nixed a Kesler trade. Also, the hire of Torts was widely reported as being a ownership hire.

Blame, Gillis all you want but no real GM is going to want to work under Francesco Aqulini who seems to be the Jerry Jones of hockey because he is really wants to be a GM.

By the way, all the legit topics discussing ownership's involvement in the Kesler non trade have been immediately locked on these boards without explanation.

Im not too sure about that.

As far as I can remember Gillis was given the green light and then some; he was afforded every luxury (sleep doctors for example)

This is the only time the owners have ever interfered. I would guess its because hes not actually the GM anymore in any realistic sense.

I think the Aquilinis realize that meddling ownership creates disasters.

  4. Last summer MG wanted the moon for Luongo. Now he trades him for magic beans because he "had to".

I love how no matter what Gillis asks/gets for Luongo, it was exactly what Gillis should have done.

If we were going to trade Lu for nothing (compared to Kadri, Gardner +1st), why trade Schneider at all?

He could have dumped the contract (as it appears he has tried to do) and kept the cornerstone of a proper rebuild.

And to those saying he got value for Lu: Why did he have to eat 15% of his contract? If Lu was soooooo bloody valuable, why keep 15% of his salary?

Answer - He did not get value for Lu.

Gillis has tricked me on a couple of occasions into thinking he isn't a piss poor GM. I was wrong.

Im pretty sure his days here are done.

I would guess that Luongo situation and resulting trade was almost certainly not approved by ownership the way things went down today.

That would be 3 trades Gillis has been forced to make from a disadvantage, which is 2 more then most GMs are allowed.

He has set the bar so low Im not sure its going to be all that difficult for a successor with the proper credentials to improve the situation here.

  5. I don't understand this flip flopping fan base.

Its a good trade? Last year we couldn't pay a team to take Luongo? Sure you can argue we treated Luongo poorly but didn't Gillis just get him to the place he wanted to go to the most? Either way we got a solid goalie prospect, respected 3rd line center and quite the salary dump. Good redemption by Gillis and good deal, I'm sure we got more than we would have last year.

    Excited for what happens tomorrow.

He didnt win that award yesterday.

No offense, but I dont see the point of acting as if he did.

  6. He doesn't use it wisely as far as I can tell, no argument here.

And even though he has yielded incredible value signing free agents, its kind of a moot point because it only accomplished a fraction of what it would take for this team to remain as competitive as in years past.

If he had more foresight he may have avoided this situation altogether; that is the one where he is completely reliant on hitting several massive home runs in free agency just to keep pace with the powerhouses of the west.

  7. Did I mention he took the Canucks to their third Stanley Cup appearance in team history and was a game within winning the damn thing?

I hear something to that effect every time this topic comes up, a reminder is not necessary.

It didnt save AVs job did it? Not even a Stanley Cup makes you bulletproof.

He has the knack for finding cheap and effective talent. Lack, Tanev, Santorelli, Higgins, Richardson etc.

Great with contracts, period. People complaining about Sedins even though they are on pace for 66 points in a year where the entire PP and offense has been garbage.

He does have a knack for getting good value with free agents.

As for their scoring woes... Well, he built this team. Im not sure how he gets let off the hook for that.

  8. Honestly, the Canucks have been doing BETTER because of Gillis. Look at Santorelli, Stanton and Richardson. All producing at a good rate, and cheap as well..

Look at our new backup, Lack. 8-6-3, Signed for another 2 years after this at 1.5 million each.

I would have to say, that Gillis is doing his job fine. Maybe it isnt Gillis's fault that we cant score a damn.

A lot of posters are agreeing with this post, and I also agree has done a fantastic job of getting value from free agents.

As for the second point I couldnt disagree more. How does Gillis get off the hook when the team he has assembled cant score?

I don't think there is any rush to replace him at the moment; but preferably before any further major decisions are made with the team. Gillis might botch it.

  9. Gillis took over after we missed the playoffs.

2 Presidents Trophies and a SCF appearance later, and missing the playoffs again is finally a possibility (albeit slim). This just after MG made a large investment in our future with the best draft we've had since 99.

So what did he "ruin" exactly?

He's certainly not in the running for GM of the year now is he?

All President Trophy-like accomplishments do is buy you time for when you arent doing a good job, and this team has deteriorated rather quickly since then.

His typical response to this is to make up excuses like "I dont have a crystal ball" as if everyone else has one.

  10. It felt better then most losses for sure, and I feel playing that style gives us a much better chance to put the boot to these ridiculously stacked Cali teams. Our division and conference is idiotic this season.

However... and this is a big however... the Canucks were terrible on the PP once again... especially late in the game when they generated next to nothing...

It has cost them too many points this season.

  11. Booth again?

Im not sure what Torts dislikes so much about him, but the fact of the matter is that whether he is in the lineup or not it still costs the same.

You cant really trade him considering his contract and current value.

  12. so far JT is far worse with his player management than AV. He's ruining Kassian, imo

Is there a coach out there that tolerates a questionable effort level? Sutter? Hitchcock? Tippett? Ruff? Babcock? Julien? Its the same with all of those guys as far as I can tell.

I doubt any coach who overlooks something like that is going to remain at his job for very long.

  13. I'm not worried about him - apprehensive is how 'kids' tend to play when their coach is blowing head gaskets and benching every second player. I like the job Tortorella has done, but he got a bit off the rails there for a few games at the end of the last homestand. If they want a more aggressive Kassian, they'll have to live with the odd mistake, and Kassian actually seems to make fewer when he's more aggressive.

If thats the case then he seriously needs to understand this in a hurry. Otherwise I think you have to send him to Utica if you want to save him from this limbo he seems to be in.

I dont really care about how many points he puts up as long as he plays hard. Even the Sedins make sure they finish every check.

  14. If the day ever comes when it's time to declare Kassian a young man who did not develop to his abilities, how about at that point someone runs a message down under the bridge that there's a new thread for y'all to congregate in and recycle all your premature fears, desires, wishes at the appropriate time?

Id much rather he silence his critics by playing a lot better.

At this point Id be happy if he just threw some real body checks, apprehensive is the opposite of how the kid needs to play.
