  2. The Columbus Blue Jackets release the following players to FA:

    Brandon Saad

    Josh Anderson

We thank both, especially Brandon Saad for their contributions during their tenures to the Blue Jackets organization, and wish them the best of luck wherever they go.

    BLUE JACKETS ON THE RISE

It's been a season thus far with lots of inconsistencies for Columbus, despite that, they sit with the 7th best record in the NHL at the moment, but 3rd place in the brutal Metropolitan division. While we're only just passing the halfway mark, the Blue Jackets look poised to make the playoffs this year after finishing 2 points outside of a wildcard spot last season.

The infusion of Drew Doughty into the lineup has given Columbus a ridiculous defense core, add to that Zach Werenski has solidified himself as one of the elites in the NHL and Seth Jones is right behind and it's no surprise why the Blue Jackets currently find themselves near the top of the NHL standings. Brandon Saad having a career year with 40 points so far has also helped ease the loss of the offensive production Alexander Wennberg provided last season, while Oliver Bjorkstrand has also found his groove and is having a breakout season with 36 points, and is seemingly becoming a cute Danish superstar. The sole rookie on the roster, Pierre-Luc Dubois is also having an impressive season with 32 points and has provided much more than was expected of him for his first NHL season, but let's not just look at the positives, as the team still has a lot of persisting issues.

While the team has continued to progress and much of the roster from when GM GFY took over the team still remains, and indeed the plan was and still is to remain patient, some players have had troubles really hitting their stride. Josh Anderson has continually struggled with finding any real chemistry and producing and has led to trade rumours of Anderson being shopped around the league. Newly acquired Brayden Schenn was having an average season by his standards before being traded to the Blue Jackets, and seems to have slowed down even moreso since arriving on the scene. While his production has picked up slightly of late, more is to be expected of Brayden down the stretch if the Blue Jackets want to assure their playoff aspirations. Matt Calvert has also been disappointing so far, and Devante Smith-Pelly is starting to look like a potential future healthy scratch with his play. The Nut has also regressed after a decent rookie season, and overall the team, while playing better defensively than seasons previous, still feels as if they could be better than what they've shown thus far.

So while the top of the roster is performing quite well and some players are even overachieving, the bottom-half of the roster is incredibly questionable and could easily cost the Blue Jackets a playoff spot in the second half of the season. The Blue Jackets have continually been looking to change up their bottom-6 but have issues finding the right kind of player to help give it more flexibility, add in that the Metropolitan division is a never-ending bloodbath and the team could easily fizzle out... But the team is still incredibly young and growing pains are to be expected, but potentially this could finally be the year where the Columbus Blue Jackets make their mark as a true contender for seasons to come.
