  1. karma-centric thought:

He started strong, then hit a wall.  then got discouraged.  then learned to play defense.  now he is getting another shot.

seems like a cycle has happened, let's see if he can take the next step into a new cycle or if he still needs time on the old one.

There was a tier of similar players after the top 5 and Jake would have been right at that next pick of BPA according to Bob McKenzie, who surveys multiple scouts to make a "consensus" list. I would argue that McKenzie's list would be the true BPA as he does survey multiple scouts and ranks accordingly. Therefore, according to McKenzie Virtanen was the "consensus" seventh best player of that draft.

In regards to Juolevi, I'm glad he will be working out here in Vancouver with their trainers. Judging by his comments, he'll be here just for a little while before going back to Finland. At least he'll get specific direction on workout and nutrition. Also a bonus getting coached and mentored by Sami Salo! Salo was probably the most underrated defenseman of the Sedin era... he was rock-solid defensively, could move the puck up with simple passes, and had enough offensive prowess to be out there on the powerplay and fire his cannon of a shot. Hopefully Juolevi can learn not just how to shoot better and harder but also insight on what it takes to be a pro and how to handle the position and physicality of the game.

ok you're right, I stand corrected!  thanks!

  3. No need to rush him, I'd like to see him developed properly.  Junior?  Sure another year if that's the best place for him.   Is he AHL eligible next year?  That might be better?

Real concern?  I'm  worried he will be rushed in order to show progress and sell tickets....  we don't have a great track record in this regard, and our GMs always seem to need to show this progress in concern for their jobs.   Hope that has changed with the rebuild admission... we will see!!!  I am skeptical and expect him to make the team next year and have a trial by fire.  Hopefully Green can shield his minutes and help him - he is a first year contract coach so that is a good contributing factor...

Your right, but I notice a lot of the best players in the league are cocky ect. Nylander was the best player on the board at 6th by far and we passed. I know Ehlers was a good prospect as well but was much riskier then Nylander with the size concerns.

Jake was picked for need, not best player available.   We weren't rebuilding when he was picked, we were making the playoffs.   It was a risk to take a power forward.  Most of those players end up on the 3rd or 4th line, so that's what it looks we have.

  5. I think the knock on Jake was he had (has) a low hockey IQ.....  DQIQ I'm sure he is fine...   point being he has a better chance to be a 3rd or 4th line player right now than anything else.... and that was also true when we picked him.   Let him make the team that way, and then we'll see....   low hockey IQ usually means he doesn't process the play fast enough, doesn't get to the right place at the right time, etc.... he was a risky pick imho, and could still turn into a top 6 player if he develops - which happens sometimes, but this is the year to make or break the NHL .. more likely he is 3rd line material where he can play against 3rd string players and succeed... prove me wrong and I'll be ecstatic!  But let's be realistic... he isn't doing that great and there is a reason for it.

  6. amazing - you mean expensive mediocrity isn't going to be the norm anymore?

not his fault - the concussion basically took him from a top 6 forward to a bottom 6... MG always took a chance, and too bad it didn't work out

  7. This team needs a #1 D more than a forward.

Look at Detroit - they were dominant while Lidstrom was there. Not that he's gone... not so much.

Ekblad - if he is that player - is who I think the team should target. And since nobody knows, it is worth the risk. Not a short-term fix, but if it works...

from what I recall, every #1 pick for years has been on forwards... and not much has amounted from these picks by and large. not yet anyways.

    worth the risk

  8. don't judge before we see him in another set of games. 10-20? If he hasn't shown anything at that point he never will.

reminds me of grabner - never showed anything, might not make it - so trade him. reality is that you need to give these players a shot before burying them. last year wasn't a legitimate shot with the injuries

  9. Schroeder might still work. Let's see this coming year - make or break for him.

What did he have? 1 good season in the minors? We do rush players don't we? I agree the nucks don't dev players well.... At lease so far

  10. btw: the time to move up to draft #1 is next year... although switching from #6 to #1 doesn't cost as much as it probably will next year.

that is assuming that this team is making the playoffs... which might be a stretch considering what we saw this last year... Maybe the right coach, and banner years from all the players (meaning a return to just "normal" a few years ago)... a stretch, but maybe. We saw a lot of age this year....

  11. trotz for the future! he would be great to dev the young players.

he is untested with a team that can potentially win the cup - but... are we really there? I'd say no. 5 years away anyways.

I've had a change of mind - he would be good - and he could make the playoffs consistently, and learn to win with the rest of the team.

best alternative out there - unless you like Bylsma?

  12. well... Trotz has not moulded players to his style - or has he? Are his defensive teams really a result of the personnel?

I think that the coach's philosophy plays a huge roll in how the team plays. Look at Crawford, the run-and-gun coach. He did it in Colorado and they certainly had the players to do it. And he did it here in Van and he didn't really have all the players necessary to do it - but it worked out both times. Because the players wanted to play like that.

No player wants to play defensive and tentative. One absolute in Hockey (although I don't believe in absolutes, so it isn't really an absolute - ok?): Here it is: If you can score goals (your team), you have confidence. And that is a self fulliling prophecy. a feedback loop. Score a bunch of goals in a set of games, and you will probably score in the next bunch (in fact it is likely). And the inverse is equally true: don't score for a bunch of games, you probably won't score in the next bunch of games either.

So bring me a coach who can teach offense. Teaching defense is easy - or at least it is a known entity. Get us someone who can teach offense and strategy, not just shut-down hockey. Trotz is not that coach, imho.

Who? I would love to have Gretzky, but I didn't really follow what he did in Phoenix so I don't know if that would really work. Oats maybe? Someone who can see the ice better than half of his players - on the offensive side.

  13. I believe that the most important thing in a new GM is NOT that he is a genius and can out-smart other GMs - pick the best player consistently, and do other things better than anyone else. Not going to happen anyways.

What is important is that this GM is inclusive, and can get feedback from other hockey people. Because more minds = a better decision, almost every time. Proven in psychology experiments (don't ask for source, just google) and proven this last MG stretch... MG was working on an island and it showed. Hopefully Linden already has some contacts and people who can actually give him good advice / counsel ... and Benning seems to have those connections as well. That is HUGE and bodes well if it comes to pass.

Just don't go off the board again - it's great if your off the board guy makes all the connections and isn't a prick... but...
