  1. Even as a UM student, I don't know much more than the average Canucks super fan about these guys' plans.

However, without giving away details, I know that Lockwood isn't as committed to the Canucks as most prospects would be for fair reasons. I still think he's gonna sign eventually, perhaps even in the coming days, but it might take some work since this is known a little bit around UM fans.

I know I'm being vague, but there's not much more to it other than that. I just think it'd be like breaking an honor code if I were to say more.

But yeah, don't take my word as fact, it's really just speculation more than anything.

Even CapFriendly is misspelling his name ! Quintin it is !

Yeah most places had him listed as Quinton for awhile.

I can see that his own email clearly lists him as Quintin Hughes so that's how I'm sure of it

Maybe they sit him or only use him on the PP to "protect" him from further injury?

Haha I doubt we care about the Canucks at this moment, just trying to salvage the season.

I'm all in though on Quinn sitting though, as I've given up on Michigan Hockey and I'm just hyped about the Michigan basketball game tonight at this moment.

  4. Michigan chokes for the 4th straight game and loses in OT for the 4th straight game smh, this time giving away a two goal lead.

its pretty simple from here on out. If Michigan wins 8 straight games they’re national champs, if they lose at any point, Quinn packs his bags and comes to Vancouver.

I'm just a bit bummed that UofM made the playoffs...7 teams in the B1G and 6 of them are in the playoffs?!

Anyways, I guess another solid run will build his confidence and help him to know what it takes to win...we can use a bit of that swagger! So we might not see him til next year...something else to be positive about the future...

Now if we could just lose for (the other) Hughes...or how about cookoo for Kakko? No? Too much?

It’s not the playoffs. It’s the big ten tournament, which is a separate thing, since there’s a champion for both the regular season and the tournament. Also, all 7 teams are in the tournament, not just 6.

Even if there were a 6 team playoff, Michigan has been nowhere close to being out of it. They’ve been #2 or #3 consistently throughout the season until they dropped many spots on the last day.

  6. Unfortunately Michigan has choked all 3 of its last games in OT and as a result has 1 point out of those 3 games rather than 9 points. Goaltending is a major issue.

However, don't be surprised that UM makes it past the first round as a 6 seed (the 2-6 seeds are all within a few points, Michigan could've gotten the 2 seed if they won the last game). If I had to guess I think Michigan pulls it off (trying not to be biased), and Quinn stays another week.

Minnesota is not too threatening, and Michigan is more talented on paper and on the ice.

Looks like we got a more skilled Tyler Motte coming our way!!

check out Motte's numbers at UM, compared to Lockwoods.  I'd say Lockwood is a less skilled version of Motte

Yeah Motte was a hell of a player I was just gonna say this. However, Motte's career has been a tad disappointing given his production in college.

So with that said hopefully Lockwood is the opposite

Looks like they have two regular season games left, and are way down in the standings... Quinn might be here soon, will be fun to watch when he arrives

What standing are these? Michigan is 3rd in their conference and everyone is in the playoffs so it'll likely be a week or two before he's done

I love hearing this interview between Juice and Burr:

Man unlike some of you who are older, I grew up watching those guys, and Kes and the Sedins. I know nowadays we give Kesler a lot of sh!t, but he's someone that I've loved watching from the start and still root for. Juice and Burr have a funny story at about 8:56 regarding Kes, but the whole thing is worth a listen.

    Thanks for posting!

Liked him and Dobson more than the rest. Someone should also tell Sportsnet that his first name is actually "Quinton" and not "Quintin".

Changing the topic, going through the first few pages of the thread...

    It's Quintin, not Quinton. LOL

Totally agree. Both Hansen and Roussel are valuable pieces to a successful team. Both guys offer speed, peskiness, and the flexibility to move them up and down the lineup - I expect Lockwood to be the same. My guess is he caps out around 40 points a season (like Hansen and Roussel). There's absolutely nothing wrong with that level of production. Not everyone can be a ppg player haha!

I’m just speaking in terms of college though when I say he’s close to point per game. Obviously if he becomes an NHL regular similar to any of the aforementioned players that’s already an accomplishment. When I’m comparing players though I’m not really thinking level of success, rather I’m thinking style of play, which is why Pettersson and Gretzky get comparisons though Petey obviously is nowhere close

Vintage Hansen for me. Even though his production may lead one to believe that he'll be more offensive than Hansen, i habe my doubts. Don't want to discredit him, as i think hell be a successful bottom 6 player though.

Oh no doubt that if he reaches a Hansen level that would be incredible. It’s just that IF we were making comparisons it feels like there’s always something else that stick out in his game over the person you’d be comparing him to, for instance with Hansen, it would be Lockwoods hands being a strength and Hansen’s hands not being a strength.

    brendan gallagher with less production?

Hmm yes that seems closer. However I genuinely can't think of an entirely accurate comparison right now, though I'm sure there is someone.

Lockwood is interesting because he doesn't have a glaring weakness, like he has all the tools. He's fast, he's skilled, he has a nice wrist shot, he's willingly physical, and competes. You can't even make a comparison because anyone you choose, it seems like you could say "well Lockwood is also ____, he can also do ____."

It's just when he steps onto the ice sometimes those attributes don't all come together at the same time and he doesn't produce points like other top players with his skillset do for some reason. I mean he's close to point per game, but his skillset indicates that it should be even higher.

I think the best NHL comparable might already be on our team in Roussel.

Lockwood has a lot of skill though. Roussel was born a grinder but Lockwood is an offensive driver at the college level, and I would bet at least some of it translates to the NHL.

It’s pretty common practice. I think it’s done as a show of good faith to get the player-management relationship off on the right foot and as a means of enticing the player to sign.

Yeah, I think the main thing honestly isn't management being incompetent or anything like that. It's really just saying, "hey, we're not gonna be petty and try to limit your games for our benefit, if you play 9 games, you play 9 games, if you don't, then you don't, simple as that, because your development is the only thing that matters."

Any chance Hughes could play March 6th against the Leafs? Travelling to Van for my first game at Rogers.

    3 hours ago, tas said:

that's probably just about the very earliest game that he could potentially play in, and seeing as it's the leafs (and therefore, without looking at a calendar, presumably hnic), I could see the canucks really wanting to get him in there for the marquee matchup, but I would personally cross my fingers rather than holding my breath.

No, earliest end to Michigan's season is the 9th, assuming they get swept out of the first round of the Big Ten Tournament by a lower seed (probably either Wisconsin or MSU). If we win, the Canucks will have to wait in one-week intervals for Michigan to play again next (semis on the 16th and finals on the 23rd). If Michigan wins the Big Ten, Canucks will have to wait until again in one-week intervals for Michigan to play again in the NCAA tournament (two games around the end of March), then on April 11th and 13th if they advance to the Frozen Four. Any loss in that period (other than the first round of the Big Ten Toruney where it's a best of 3), will result in Michigan's season ending.

My guess is that Michigan will advance in the first round, but lose either in the Big Ten semifinals or finals. That would mean Quinn's season ends on March 16th or March 23rd.

  17. I know this topic has been exhausted already but I just wanna add something:

When a player makes the league from the AHL, or his style of play is transformed, there are almost always comments as to how the minor league team has done such an excellent job with such a player and that's where a lot of the credit is given. When a player doesn't pan out, comments are generally on how the player, well, just didn't pan out, whether it be because of effort, fitness, skill etc... It's generally only after a series of players not panning out until the minor league development system gets criticized.

Player development I think always requires constant communication, whether it's to change the way a player plays, make him more confident, or less cocky, or just instill the necessary skills to reach the next level. Development isn't just: "this is how we expect you to play, these are the parameters, if you do them you get playing time, if you don't you won't get playing time." So while Ryan Johnson says that “It’s very clear as an organization how we expect a player to play," it doesn't refute what Palmu's said.

For Palmu, he was in a situation where seemingly there was a lack of communication between player and coaches. So if he's telling the truth, and Palmu makes the NHL (ignoring that he already abandoned the AHL), there would be hypocrisy in the sense that a lot of credit would be given to the system, whereas he really had to pave his own way, meeting the expectations set by the system. (It's not about whether you believe Johnson and the organization about how there's already expectations being communicated, or if you believe Palmu about how no one talked to him, both can be true at the same time)

Essentially, if a player is just given a set of standards to reach, rather than actually communicating and teaching to help them reach it, it isn't really "player development" as we think it, it's really just a testament to how well the player has developed on his own.

I'm not really taking a side as to who was right or who was wrong, I'm mostly just saying that sometimes, the system gets too much credit, when it's more that the player carved out his own path to success.

  18. Quinn will not be going to Vancouver until at least March 10th. If UM wins the best of 3 Vancouver will have to wait till the 16th which is the semis, and if UM advances to the finals that’ll be on the 23rd. If UM wins that, the. Vancouver will have to wait until around April since that means UM will be in the NCAA tournament. If they lose at any point in that stretch Quinn will be coming to Vancouver.

I'm definitely not going to cheer for UM to lose so hopefully he goes to Vancouver as late as possible :towel:

Quinn is having a very good year leading his team in points.

If Quinn had some offensive forwards to play with his point total would be much higher..

UM is a front loaded team - the offense isn't really the problem. They've got two elite team USA guys in Norris and Lockwood and many other capable guys. (Norris is out though)

His point total is pretty reflective of the season he's having. Obviously if he had an absolutely elite team like Boeser did with UND his point totals would be up, but you could say that about any player basically.

So you can't really say he should be getting more points
