We are a long way from done. Our defence is a shambles, we only have one realistic prospect on D - Juolevi, and it is doubtful he will be ready next year - we need at least to fill the 1-4 slots - with Tanev always hurt, we have no-one to put in them. Look at our D as a blank slate. None of Edler, Del Zotto, Stetcher, Pouliot, or Hutton is realistically a top four D man on a team that could compete for the big prize, and Tanev spends all his time hurt..That is essentially a clean sheet, with maybe Youlevi to start his apprenticeship in a couple of years. If Tryamkin after completing his existing contract, and comes back in a couple of years, you can maybe cut it down to one less top four guy that we need. If we draft one this year, it is unlikely he will be able to step right in. We may well be three to four years away from getting a competitive defence.
If we don't re-sign Benning, and ownership decides they need immediate results by trading off prospects for has-beens, we will never get there. It is Linden's job to go to ownership and tell that them the immediate gratification that they cannot have. This year's draft will be top heavy with defencemen, so we would do well to get another top ten pick - that would significantly reduce this team's penance in purgatory.I think our current pool of defence is not far off. Once Tryamkin comes back, Tryamkin, Gudbranson, Tanev, Pouliot is a solid top 4 with Juolevi and Stetcher rounding up top 6.
Get what we can for Edler , Del Zotto and if we win the Dahlin sweepstakes, I think our defense is good to go. Even if not Dahlin, take the best defensemen available this draft and we are good to go but we need to bring back the big Russian.

I would prefer Elias be the one to lead the Swedes to victory over Canada.
However, had Dipietro and Lind also made the team along with Gajovich, I would be cheering for canada while hoping EP has a great performance

Elder a CANUCK, may have to be moved to make room.for a younger CANUCK names Olli juolevi. Do you see how those 2 would come up in a DISCUSSION?
It happens. It's regarding the same topic. Get over it. You don't get to decide what we can talk about at where we can talk about it.
LOL. Juolevi plays defence for the Canucks. Tryamkin used to play defence for the Canucks. Tryamkin is now in Russia. Sharapova is also Russian. Sharapova plays tennis. So. Does Nadal.
Hey let's talk about tennis.

You do know that he has been killing it 5x5 in SEL all year and did same in the first game of this tournament? You did know that he has the flu and it may well have impacted his 5x5 today but even if it did not, you raise an overall concern based upon one game? These kids are under enough of a microscope that even with him right up there in leading the entire tournament in scoring, having a (year to date) a historic year for a kid that age in SEL and having had most analysts of credibility ooze praise on him - isn't he allowed a bad game even if he didn't have the flu? Isn't it encouraging versus disappointing that he scores a goal in a game where he wasn't his best?
I recently mentioned it but ppl had the same concerns about Boeser after last years WJC (including me)
One tourney will not make or break a kids career or be the absolute indicator of success or failure. It is simply more data to help with projections. We've seen Hodgson lead tourney in scoring, same with Schroeder but no NHL success. We've seen Boeser mediocre but having one of the best rookie seasons ever in the NHL. WJC is just one week of hockey and there could be so many different factors as to why certain players look better than others. (ice time, line mates, injury /illness)
What's funny is that Petterson has still looked good every game and has been a positive contributor. Him Dahlin and Nylander are the guys the team leans on and Sweden looks like they will be in the medal rounds this year.
I'd say that's pretty good news for a 5th overall pick that people were unsure about..

More money. sure agents pushing that lol.
Are the Canucks allowed to talk to his agent with numbers? They could include his buyout in the contract
Allows us to trade guddy at the TDL if anything was actually being set up for next season
The fact of how good he has played Him and his agent know A no short show me a deal, And more money Based on last year and this year he has proved at 23 he is already a top 3 d with huge potential to put up points.
Edler OJ DP pretty damn good left side . all can put up points. All can eat minutes Tram and Edler are solid in their zone. While DP keeps improving
I don't agree with the idea of trading Gudbranson. The guy is huge, logs big minutes, steady defensively, physically intimidating, fights well. All that and he is still only 25.
I see Gudbranson wearing an A while Horvat wears the C for many years to come.
I would only get rid of players that are in their high 20s or early 30s.
This team will be a playoff team in 2 years. Next year even if all goes well but I would rather that they don't peak so early and continue to build for 2 more years.
By the 2020 playoffs , Gudbranson is only 28 and will be the veteran leadership on this team allowing us 3-5 years of playoff runs before the next rebuild.

I don't think all those words mean what you think they mean.
1. Start removal/attritioning out of bad contracts: Ericksson, Gudbranson, Gagner, Sutter, Sbisa, Del Zero
2: Draft and develop new core, continue to move out/attrition contracts and older veterans. Edler, Sedins still here and of course we traded all those picks for the likes of Vey, Clendening (there go a couple of seconds right there)
3: Once new core players start arriving, move out remainder of old core So we removed the young players, McCann, Forsling instead4: The new core I think we are still waiting for the new core.
I would re-sign Gudbranson. Still young at 25 years old. He'll be productive for at least another 5 years minimum. I see us contending within 3-5 years and he'll be foundational during the playoff years.
As for Sutter, I can see Gaunce taking his role in the future.

Bo Horvat was such a good pick looking back. He’s one of the few guys who can match up vs speed or size effectively and still have an advantage.
Pettersson will need the speed to get to elite status. All the smaller guys who succeed have top end wheels.
Kyle Turris is actually an interesting comparable. I kind of see him as an average development curve for Pettersson in the NHL.
Horvat is probably one of those guys I bet the vets from the other team don't want to face. He's one of those guys that when you try to hit, you end up feeling the pain too. He's literally built like an ox but is also fast.
We need Jake to play like that too. And soon Jonas.
-
Gudbranson needs to get re-signed. He's the only big and tough dman on the roster but the huge benefit is that he logs heavy minutes and is a legit top 4 guy who is actually good. Opposing forwards will take liberties on our defenceman if he is no longer here.
He's got a great pedigree and is still only 26. There is no one like him on our roster and is legitimately our only heavy weight.

One of the things I used to love watching was Virtanen laying big hits.
Does anyone know why he stopped doing that? Or is he still playing with some edge in Utica?
My personal guess is that he had made some predatory hits and was on both the NHL and players watch list and making a bad name for himself and toned it down when he started to take some cheap shots as well.
Some think it was a lingering shoulder issue.
Will we see Virtanen amp up his physical play once he learns the complete game?
-
Knowing what we know now, where would Tryamkin go in the draft if they did a do over?
Potentially first round?

Are you happy with those first round picks, except for Boeser, knowing that we could have Ehlers, Pasternak, and Tkatchuk in our forwards right now?
I'm happy with Virtanen and Juolevi.
Every time I watch a game, I lament over the fact that we don't have any players that can make impact hits that change the complexion of the game. I haven't seen a big kid skate that fast and has the ability to lay huge hits like that. Add to that a lethal shot. I haven't given up on him. I would be ecstatic if he becomes a 1st liner in the league however, his lack of hockey IQ could be a problem of reaching that potential. However, even if he becomes a 3rd liner, I see him as a Raffi Torres but with more size and speed and the ability to chip in and score 15 goals. In a playoff series, if he can take one of their top players out of the playoffs with a huge hit while chipping in 2 goals, that's a win.
We love Stetcher but he is a poor man's version of Juolevi. If we love the way Stech plays now, wait until Juolevi laces em up for the nucks in a couple of years.
We're just really fortunate that Benning has hit some home runs with other picks such a Tryamkin, Boeser, and signing Stech.

If Virtanen can finish out the year strong in Utica and come to camp ready next year along with Boeser and hopefully a top 5 pick this summer, next year could be quite exciting.
Canucks still have a few years to go before they get really competitive but I'd rather watch young guys with upside battle than washed up ufas battling

Granlund being protected isn't a slam dunk, I'm sure Benning and Linden would not want to lose Hansen. Fortunately they'll have a whole seasons worth of hockey to make the decision. But if Hansen is left available, he's definitely getting picked up over Sbisa.
I don't see Hansen being taken in am expansion draft. He's too valuable to a cup contender to not be worth anything (even a 3rd rounder) at the deadline. A contender would be willing to trade for him for the cup run and then expose him in the expansion draft. It's pretty much like trading for a pending UFA at the trade deadline.
If the canucks don't trade him, they are either stupid or plan on protecting him.
Unless....is there a certain rule where a team. Can't trade for him at the deadline and leave him unprotected?
-
So, what do you do when you have a big, hard hitting physical young winger who can also skate like the wind?
I know
Lets not use any of those attributes and let him hang back as the 3rd forward while the other two forecheck.
That way, he can use his most criticized skill which is hockey IQ as he has to read whether to pinch at blue line or hang back or even figure out which passing lane he should take away....
I used to think it was Jake's hockey IQ that prevented him from being first man in on the forecheck but I think it has to be coaches decision. There's no other explanation for him always being beaten by his other 2 linemates who are slower.
If this isn't Willie's plan, than Jake must be really dumb because timing a dump in as a forechecking winger starts when you are a kid barely able to skate.
Notice what happens when Jake's first man in? He lays guys out.(final minute in the TO game) Let's let him do that more often and I have a feeling we'll see a lot more turnovers by the opposing D-man not to mention wearing them down all game.
If Jake doesn't have hockey smarts, simplify the game for him and let him go in full speed and hit guys on the most basic zone entry in hockey.
If you pay attention to this, you'll notice that Jake's first man in usually 1 out of every 10 times.
It should be more like 8 or 9 out of 10 times

Ehlers averages 14.3 mins per game as of today. But we all know he was averaging 16-17 mins at the start of the year playing with REAL TOP 6 PLAYERS. He had a stretch of 20+ games of doing a whole lot of nothing for his team which hurt them big time so they had to demote him to the third line. Which is why his ice time per game looks skewed.
Jake on the other hand has been scratched every other game averaging 10 mins of ice time per game AND thats with 4th line players rougly 80% of the time. He isn't being thrown to the wolves they're taking their time with him easing him in which is the right thing to do. Same as Horvat for example. Horvat was labeled as a 3rd liner because of similar reasons as Jake(not getting enough opportunities to produce right away). Jake will earn more ice time prove me right eventually
I think I've also read that Jake's advanced stats are quite good as well. Nylander nor Ehlers haven't proved jack to suggest one is better than the other. I will admit that Jake's positioning and hockey smarts weren't too good in the first half of the season but we are starting to see him come around after the world juniors. He gets limited time on the 4th line with the likes of Cracknell and Dorsett. He gets no PP time and anybody that expects Jake to outproduce Ehlers needs to put things in perspective and wonder whether that is a realistic expectation. What I like seeing instead is him starting to get more confident and holding onto the puck a bit more looking to make plays rather than dishing it off right away and heading for a line change.
He may not get more points than Nylander nor Ehlers but if Jake turns into a consistent 60 point player who has the ability to lay guys out and have d-men turning pucks over in fear of getting hit, I will take that over Ehlers or Nylander because that is our organizational need. Our version of Nylander and Ehlers are McCann, Baertschi, Shinkauruk so if just one of those guys can outproduce Nylander or Ehlers, this whole discussion is moot because those are the guys we have to fill the scoring roles.
Regardless of same draft class, you have to compare apples to apples and the comparison isn't always based on points. For instance, would you rather have Milan Lucic at 0.6 pts/game while physically imposing his will and defending his teammates helping the team overall play without fear playing tougher than they are, or would you rather have Eberle at 0.87 points /game who helps the team by scoring goals and assists?
It really depends on organizational need and to compare the two players only by looking at points is just down right silly.

Yeah, I'm with you. I thought Jake, overall, made a more noticeable impact on games early on in the season. You noticed the same trends as me, though. He's been positionally sound and less aggressive. This isn't a bad thing, because it suggests he's growing into thinking through the game.
He's also been effective by underlying metrics. More so as the season progresses. I have high hopes for this kid. He looks like a future 2nd liner, and I think with the Canucks actively investing in development, he's more likely to reach that ceiling than not.
Yes. I'm totally good with him trying to figure out the cerebral part of the game while putting the crash and bang style on hold. Once he gets it I would love it if he can pick his spots and lays out some guys.

I've noticed that Jake hasn't been hitting as much lately. I think he's making a conscious effort not to be overly aggressive and trying to stay in position. He's playing better without the puck and is more aggressive when he does have the puck. While I am happy with the latter, I used to really enjoy it when he used to take runs at players. I like that edge and want the opposing D to be looking over their shoulders when retrieving the puck (leading to mistakes and turnovers)

Good for you, but I've read same reasons why Jake shouldn't be called a failure:
Jake had big bidy, means he's better
Ehlers production dropped off, Virt is still better even if he hadnt been productive in any of his time in the NHL, and you know 19 yr old rookie, production doesn't really matter for 19 yr old rookies
Ehlers is more dynamic offensively and has great Hky IQ
McCann too got smoked by a Russian, and had a concussions before, Virt had Shoulder injury, shink had Hip injury too
Warhippy would also hate you for projectingal a 19 yr n a half prospect, with 40 game less NHL exp and over 8 games WJC exp, NHL Career to him, you'd be a fool
As for sanhiem and Perlini they've contributed more to TC than Jake have
You do realize that after all that gibberish you wrote, the only thing you wrote that remotely supports your argument is that Ehlers is more dynamic offensively and has better hockey IQ.
Anyway, I'll revisit this thread in 3 years.
My thoughts are that Ehlers and Nylander will be scoring wingers and Virtanen will be a lucic like winger with more speed and less douche.
With players like the Sedins, McCann, Baerstchi, I'd rather have a Lucic to compliment them rather than another McCann.

Didn't we want the best or the Local boy
We'll good thing we have 1 out of the 7 players listed. (McCann)
Nylander got smoked going cross ice with his head down. Who knows what the after effects of the concussion will be. I have a feeling it will be guys like Jake knocking him out in the bigs in 3 years)
Ehlers has slown down. (we are seeing the effects of NHL pros buckling down as the season wears on which is affecting guys like McCann as well)
I haven't seen anything from Sanhiem or Perlini to suggest they would be better than Jake.
I admit, Jake may turn out to be a 3rd liner who plays physical and chips in for 15-20 goals. The thing is, I don't think any of the guys you mentioned are clear cut stars either. The positive is, I think Jake as a 3rd liner is his bare minimum. For the others you mentioned, if they don't produce as a top 6 player, I don't think they can contribute much else to the team.
So yeah, if we redrafted, out of the players you mentioned, I would be deciding between Ritchie and Virtanen but still go with Virtanen.
-
The entire Canada team looks pretty awful. We are extra critical of Virtanen because he is Canuck property but when looking through with a critical eye, the only guys that have really impressed me on the team this year are Konecny, and Marner. Even Strome despite some goals have shown that his decision making isn't the greatest. It's not that I'm wearing rose coloured glasses but I just don't think Virtanen has been that bad. I think the discouraging thing is realizing that he isn't able to generate offence on his own and that he will be a complimentary player but I still have faith that he will be a dominant player when paired with the right player. But yes, he does have a lot of work to do to improve but I think he will get there. He's got size, speed, strength, shot. Even if he he missing hockey IQ, if he concentrates on learning the bare minimum like positioning on the screen, he will still be an asset to the organization.

Tram is definitely good enough to be a top 4 in the NHL.
How often do you see a Russian good enough to be a star in the NHL stay in Russia?
Unless they've already been in the NHL and have made millions before going back to Russia to finish their careers?
He's too young and too good to not wanna test himself in the best league in the world.
