I wonder... If we didnt draft Virtanen @ 6th.. Where would he have fell too hmm
And then who's to say what affect that would have had on Jake? Maybe it lights a fire and next thing you know he starts living up to expectations. Then everyone would crucify Benning for not taking the hometown boy. You can't win as a GM in this league till you hoist the cup...then you win...for that year anyways.

Reminds me a lot of when Horvat came into the league. Very calm mature get to work attitude. Think we have another gem here.

Haven't been anticipating a canucks game this much for a long time! Only a couple hours to go.

I remember watching him at the prospects camp at shawnigan. Him and Stetcher were by far the 2 best d at the camp. Stetcher, I was confident we would see this year(although not till late, his early success was a wonderful surprise). Juolevi, wasn't far behind. I would say famn close to on par with Stetcher in every area, better in some, just needed some size and grit/heart. He almost seemed too cool. Stetcher's drive and heart were unmatched, that was the difference. Juolevi also evaded checks like gretzky, so elusive(doughty in todays day)...so hard to catch.

Sometimes I don't understand what our fans want.
I can't think of a single fan who does not want to build for the future. Time and time again, I see fair complaints from the fans that management is making errors trying to build a competitive team now when we should be stocking up for the future.
And here we have drafted possibly the top defenseman of the draft, and fans are in this thread in droves wishing Tkachuk could help our team today.I just don't get it. I guess we just want all the players.
Fairweather fans...

Poor Boeser, getting pushed aside in his own thread.

He outplayed all the D in every game he played. He was arguably our best player in those games.
No he didn't. I love him as a prospect just as much as anyone else, but lets not exaggerate. Better than Larsen, Tryamkin and Biega? Sure, but best player in the games he played, not a chance.

Fair enough, he is not ready, then he is not ready, irrespective of who else we have. Is Virtanen ready?
For the most part. Unlike joulevi, physically, yes. However, again, unlike joulevi, he needs to mature on the mental part of the game. Consistency will be a big development goal for virtanen.

what a joke the Canadiens are. Everyone knows we picked the top defenceman in the draft. And then we send him back to the OHL because he is not ready yet. The Canadiens pick a lower rated defenceman from the same league and he will start the season with the team. What does that say about the quality of the defence in Montreal!
The only reason Joulevi didn't make the starting line up is his physical maturity. When he is physically ready, he'll likely be an impact player right away. I wouldnt be surprised if he ends up being the best dman of the draft.

Meh...i havent beem impressed with him. I dont see him on the bigs for a few years yet

I loved Stetcher after seeing him at the prospects camp. This tournament just reinforces that opinion. I do not think he'll make the team, but I do see him as first pairing and 1st call up from Utica.

Saw this kid at prospects camp. Id bet he makes the team no later than mid next season. He is that good. I would be surprised, but overjoyed if he made the team out of camp this year.

Nick Lindstrom? You know that guy from the Red Wings?..... he was kinda good.....
I think he was mocking your spelling...but whatever, I think everyone understood who you were talking about.
If Olli can be a fraction of what Lidstrom was we will have hit the jackpot.

I'm not expecting him to play for the Canucks for 2-3 years. And that's fine. I'd love to see him this season but am prepared to watch him develop for however long it takes till he's 100% ready.
Next two years play on London and then one year in Utica should be lots of development time.
The second year in Utica hurts though. It's too much time in junior. The good prospects have out grown junior by there draft + 2 year.
That damn CHL/ahl agreement just sucks. The entire NHL gets screwed by it. And us as fans. The agreement stunts development either by keeping these kids in a league they've outgrown and dominate or forcing teams to rush the prospects into a situation they aren't ready for playing against men with a huge risk of injury. It's bs. More of these guys should be going to Europe like Matthews did.
He won't need that much time. One more year in junior and perhaps start in Utica next year. I would expect him to be on the team midway through next year. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it real hard on management to send him back to junior this year. He's that good.

crazy how some people think Juolevi has accomplished everything in the juniors already. he was only 17 and pretty much a rooking playing behind alot of great players. yes he's won everything and that is good, but he played on great teams also. let's see how he does as a junior sophomore and try to repeat the same success he had a year ago. and this time he's gonna be the player that other players look at for help and leadership. if he can handle that pressure of being the go-to-guy then it's gonna help alot towards his development. the only flaw that i see in his game is his speed to catch up to guys while back-checking. if he can dominate the juniors the 2nd time around and become even a better player then last year. then he really accomplished everything he can juniors.
i really like this kid and don't wanna see him developed and easing him in the nhl the way horvat was. i want him to come to the nhl ready to play and be a key player on the canucks blueline.
From what I saw at prospects camp, his speed at tracking down the man was just fine....it's his build that I think need's work. He needs to put on some mass to withstand the heavier NHL game. All other facets of his game looked ready.

Can't wait to see him in a canucks jersey...don't think it will be that long. I would not be surprised to see him get at least 5 games, as well as injury call up. My bet is he is top pairing in Utica by Christmas

He's looking thick in the dev camp coverage. He'll be so NHL ready this time next year, it ain't even funny.
I think he'd make the team this year if he didn't decide to do college for 1 more year.

Saw him at Shawnigan lake today. Very impressive skater and has a good shot. I do think his defensive game could use some maturing before being ready for the big league.
As much as I would.love to see him on the team, it wouldn't be a bad idea to send him back to the OHL. He's close, but probably not this year. Next year is my guess.

It's all on Gaunces shoulders now, no excuses, just turn up and show JB what u got. It's his time and it's b@lls to the wall
Agreed...really needs to step up the intensity and start assertion g himself on the opposition. He has the size and skills to make difference. Just needs the confidence to do it.

His consistency is holding him back. More than any other player at camp, I see him coast during the skating drills. When he has the puck, different story.

Linden on tsn 1040 just said that GB is 6'3 now and also 14-15 pounds heavier!
Maybe that's why he looks a little awkward and slower than expected out there. Adjusting to the growth spurt?

yeah. I get that as well. I understand that the fourth line isn't a traditional fourth line. but I would still prefer for Virtanen to be given top line minutes down in the farm. don't get me wrong. I'd love for jake to make the team out of camp. and build off of his 15 point season from last year. let's hope he makes a good jump from last year. I'm excited for him.
Agreed, I am very interested to see how he progresses this year. If he can put it together he can be a impactful, dynamic player.

Boeser proved he can play in th NHL. He has a spot unless he regresses at camp, which I cannot foresee. Imho
