SkyTrain is now out of "snow stage 2" and into "recovery stage." Staff will continue to ride onboard Millennium Line until after rush hour. Staff will also be on the platforms of Expo Line stations until 9:30pm.

I guess that's good news.

The Bridgeport Park and Ride says it's transit parking until 7pm or so, and "public parking" from 7pm to 5am.

Does anyone know what happens during "public parking" hours? What happens if you park there during transit parking hours and don't come back until "public parking" hours?

Thanks in advance.

TransLink selects FareCard proponent

December 09, 2010

TransLink selects Cubic/IBM to Design, Build and Operate Electronic Smart Card and Faregate System

TransLink has selected Cubic Transportation Systems with IBM Canada as the preferred proponent to design, build and operate the electronic smart card and faregate system, set to begin operations in the Metro Vancouver transit system by 2013.

TransLink’s new system is expected to increase the efficiency, effectiveness and security of the transit network by providing a convenient and seamless “one card” approach for customers to travel all modes of transit. As well faregates will provide a visual and physical deterrent to entering the system without payment. The new system will also accept contactless bank-issued cards for tourists, casual riders and others and will allow TransLink to collect important trip and ridership data to enable more coordinated system planning and deployment.

Cubic Transportation Systems, a subsidiary of Cubic Corporation, has demonstrated experience in successful delivery and service of large AFC (automatic fare collection) systems worldwide, including:

• London Prestige Project Oyster® Card System

• Metropolitan Atlanta Breeze® Card System

• Los Angeles Metro TAP™ Card System

• San Francisco Bay Area ClipperSM Card System

• Miami Dade County EASY® Card System

• Brisbane, Australia go Card System

IBM has been recognized by its customers and industry analysts across North America as being a leader in the Customer Relationship Management (CRM)/Call Center services and solution marketplace. They have supplied systems and services in British Columbia since 1921.

The Cubic/IBM team was selected from a group of three pre-qualified companies, including Thales/Octopus International Projects and Serco/Parkeon who participated in the request for proposal process.

“We are pleased to have Cubic/IBM on board to ensure this project is a success not only during the implementation phase but also through the 10 years they will operate and maintain the system,” says TransLink CEO Ian Jarvis. “With the skills and knowledge of a strong proponent who knows our business, matched with the support of our provincial and federal partners, we are confident we will continue to add value to the world-class transportation system we operate today.”

The Province is providing $40 million and the Government of Canada is contributing up to $30 million from the Building Canada Fund to support the approximately $100 million in eligible costs attributed to the faregates and required station improvements.

“Everyone who uses transit has the right to feel safe and secure,” said provincial Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Shirley Bond. “This electronic card and gate system will help create a safer environment for transit users, and will be an efficient and effective way to reduce fare evasion.”

“We are pleased to be working with our partners in British Columbia to improve transit for the residents of this province,” said the Honourable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway. “The implementation of these electronic fare cards and fare gate project will contribute to a safer and more secure travel system.”

TransLink and Cubic/IBM will proceed with the final contract discussions in the New Year. Following that, the design and build of the new system will commence across all of TransLink’s public transportation services including all bus, rail, SeaBus and HandyDart.

TransLink's Expo Line turns 25

VANCOUVER (NEWS130) - It's a silver anniversary for SkyTrain. The original Expo Line launched into service 25 years ago this weekend.

The line began with eight days of free rides, beginning December 11, 1985, while paid service began the next month.

TransLink's Drew Snider says that time was used to introduce the public to what was then considered revolutionary technology. "Having a driver-less automated train with nobody sitting up front, that was going to be something to be afraid of, so we needed to give people something to just allay their concerns about that."

He says SkyTrain has changed our communities and that transformation continues today. "Now we're seeing Richmond with businesses starting to look at how they can develop around the Canada Line, how parts of North Burnaby are growing because there is now rapid transit going through there, and people can live and work in an area close to transit and then be able to get off to other areas as well."

Snider says we should stay tuned for details on how TransLink plans to mark the anniversary come the new year.

I can safely bet that the candidates for the Liberal and NDP leadership will ride their plans for funding the Evergreen Line and UBC extension and do the same during the election. Then after they get into power with what will surely be a majority because this a two party province, they will forget all about their promises for funding. Then the Evergreen Line will get pushed back more and more and the UBC extension will be a pipe dream.

Would I ever love to ride the Skytrain to and from UBC. Maybe sometime in the future if and when I return for a graduate degree or whatever. It would take a miracle to occur with this game of politics going on right now.
