The Good News: We're Playing Better In The Offensive Zone

*Buzzsaw*

I am seeing a little of the former Canuck team in our breakouts and the pressure in the offensive zone. The hit by Hansen which freed the puck for the winning goal in OT was what we used to see regularly from the Canuck forwards. We are seeing a little more imagination in the passing, a little more of forwards and defence taking the puck to the net.

But it ain't anywhere what it was at our best moments last year. For example in that two on one turnover where Burrows stole the puck and tried to set up Kesler. Last year Burrows would taken advantage of the open ice in front of him and taken the puck to the net for a backhander, or at the last moment backpassed to Kesler for the easy wrister with the defence committed. Instead tonight he passed immediately when he didn't need to, he had lots of time, to Kesler, who was jammed in with two defencemen in front of him, and who easily blocked his shot. So there's lots of room for improvement.

Still, I am optimistic after watching the 2nd and 3rd periods of the Avs game.

The Bad News: We are still running around like morons in the defensive zone, there is a distinct lack of 'jump', or urgency when the opposing team has the puck, its almost like watching a bad trainwreck in slow motion as the opposing teams cycle and set up opportunity after opportunity. If Lu had not been lights out stonewalling and vacuming up almost everything which came his way, this one would have been a 6-3 laugher for Colorado.

We have been very lucky in that our two goaltenders are peaking at the time the team is going through a tough time. Go Lu! Go Scheids! :towel:
