Liberace's Off-Season Moves

Recommended Posts

Hi.

I still have faith in our team to win 4 in a row, with the exciting news about Daniel Sedin, but I am still looking to next season to improve our team with playoff performers & bigger bodies who can still play hockey.

PRE-THOUGHTS:

- All of these hinge on what the salary cap will do next season, so this is my list if the cap goes to $68+ million.

- First trade hinges on whether Brodeur comes back next season.

- The free agent signings are for

TRADES:

To VAN: Zach Parise, Mark Fayne & NJD 2012 1st.

To NJD: Cory Schneider, Mason Raymond, Andrew Alberts, VAN 2012 2nd

- Again, depends on what Martin Brodeur will do this offseason, if he retires, this seems very likely. Parise with Kesler and Booth would make a line 1b for Vancouver.

To WHOEVER: Manny Malhotra + 2013 4th

To VAN: ??? 2012 3rd.

- Manny hasn't been the same, he has a LIMITED NTC/NMC (can't remember), so to whoever he would accept a trade to (preferably a Canadian team), a 3rd would help for future trades

To VAN: Cody Franson

To TOR: Adam Polasek, Stefan Schneider + VAN 2013 4th

- Vancouver gets a 6'5 RH powerplay BC boy. Tor gets an almost ready NHL guy who is a big hitter, a forward who needs some more developement and a 4th.

To VAN: Keaton Ellerby + FLA 2012 3rd

To FLA: Keith Ballard & Marc-Andre Gragnani

- Vancouver gets another 6'5 d-man who is pretty good defensively, still needs a little more conditioning, while the Panthers get 2 puck moving defensemen, one who they are already familiar with.

SIGNINGS & RE-SIGNINGS:

Zach Parise: 8 years @ $42 million. $5.250 cap hit.

Ryan Smyth: 2 years @ $8.5 million. $4.250 cap hit.

Travis Moen: 2 years @ $3.5 million. $1.750 cap hit.

Bryan Allen: 3 years @ $10 million. $3.333 cap hit.

Mark Fayne: 3 years @ $4.6 million. $1.533 cap hit.

Cody Franson: 2 years @ $3 million. $1.500 cap hit.

Keaton Ellerby: 2 years @ $2 million. $1.000 cap hit

Samuel Pahlsson: 2 years @ $4.55 million. $2.275 cap hit.

Eddie Lack: 2 years @ $1.65 million. $825,000 cap hit.

Byron Bitz & Dale Weise: 1 year @ $700,000 each.

NOTES:

- The Franson and Ellerby deals depend on Sami Salo if he retires or not.

- Ryan Smyth is a leader, solid playoff guy, and would work well with the Sedins for going to the net

- Parise not only can shoot, pass and has speed, but he plays a good 2-way game as well

- Re-uniting Moen and Pahlsson might kick start the whole bottom-6

- Eddie Lack has already been praised by Craig McTavish and says he could be ready for the NHL

- Additions of Allen, Fayne & Franson would add size, durability and hockey sense to the back end

- Sedins always play well with whoever their winger is, but a star winger would excel them futher

- The depth in all positions would still be here with Ellerby, Tanev, Lack, Bitz & Weise

- Hoping Salo has one more year left in him, maybe he'll take another discount

- The team proposed looks like they would have use the group mentality when sticking up for each other

Thoughts?

I don't like Ryan Smyth. We need to infuse this team with top young skilled prospects ready to make the next move to the NHL. We need to retool like Philly for the short and the long term after Sedins retire. Getting Smyth or paying up for Zach Parise isn't my idea of getting it done.

Smyth loves Edmonton yes, but Smyth wants to win.

Parise might want money, but if he can play with friends and on a winning team plus a long-term deal...

It isn't Ballard's choice where he would like to go.

Nice ideas. But I don't think two busts and a pick that means nothing to us will get a future top 4 d man in Cody Franson ;)

Here's what I thought of:

Keep: The Sedin's, Kesler, Burrows, Booth, Higgins, Hansen, Lapierre and Kassian

Trade: Luongo, (not a Luongo hater) Bieksa, Raymond, Ballard

(Salo retires)

Acquire/Sign: Zach Parise, Nail Yakupov/Ryan Murray (trade up in the draft), Brad Stuart and Ryan Suter

Bring up Jordan Schroeder and/or Nicklas Jensen, Kevin Connauton and Eddie Lack

2012-13 line up:

Daniel - Henrik - Parise

Booth - Kesler - Yakupov

Burrows - Schroeder - Higgins (could turn out to be a very nice third line)

Kassian - Lapierre - Hansen

Edler - Suter

Hamhuis - Stuart

Tanev - Connauton

Schneider

Lack

Or sign a capable back up if Lack isn't quite ready for the big show.
