What systems are successful in today's NHL playoffs?

when you have big fast players that can bang and crash, the effort they put out to do this is more natural. Smaller guys do this and tend to overexagerate the issue whereby refs are temted to call the BS. When Lucic checks you into the boards, you know it and it can hurt on a clean check. To get the same result , smaller forwards have to basically run guys and get called for boarding, rough play, interference etc etc.

size and speed matters along with toughness and grit.

Our Sedins have all of the above except size. Kesler is Okay Booth is okay Kassian can become great. Sestito is moving in the right direction, we just want him meaner. take sestito's body and put Marchands meanness into it , we have a winner.

I believe a Coach like Torts could bring out that grit, meanness we lack by motivating the troops. Yes, he over does it in the Media at times, but he wilol call it like it is!

Hopefully the new coach can put systems in place to improve this team? Right now with our aging core, weak prospects (except Lack), officials and the whole league hating us, lack of toughness, and so many holes and questions with this team, i don't feel overly confident about them in the near future?

The main thing right now is the depth on defence or should i say lack there of.

Depth is everything in the playoffs, not star power. The twins still score around a point per game over the last 2 playoffs, but we're 1-8 in those games. Our secondary scoring has been invisible - no one but the Sedins have put up points really.

Meanwhile, we're watching guys like Paille and Bickell score game winning goals in the biggest games of the season. Why? Because deep into the playoffs, top lines are getting checked to death by top defencemen.

At the end of the day, it's all about matchups. Our first line has to be better than their best defencemen, and our defencemen have to be better than their top guys. But come SCF time, both teams are so evenly matched that it ends up being the 3rd and 4th line guys who are the difference. This is consistent throughout the playoffs.

In 2012, L.A stormed to a Cup with their big guns scoring, but don't forget the impact of King, Nolan and Penner who stepped up.

In 2011, guys like Marchand and Peverley obliterated the Canucks, not just their 1st line.

In 2010, the Chicago Blackhawks 3rd line outscored the Flyer almost single-handedly. Byfuglien, Versteeg and Ladd won them a Cup.

In 2009, the Penguins won thanks to their stars mainly, but their 3rd/4th liners stepped up in the SCF to score lots of game winning goals (Dupuis I believe, Fedetenko as well)

In 2008, the Red Wings stars were shutdown but their 3rd line won them the series (Cleary etc.)

The list goes on. Depth and balance is everything in the playoffs, and is eventually the difference. We don't just need good scoring 3rd liners, but 4th liners who can play 10 minutes comfortably and who can score.
