Primal Optimist Posted January 23, 2014 Share Posted January 23, 2014 The Three Stars of January race has, for once, a very narrow field after a slow month for the New York Rangers. In just over a week the actual Three Stars of the Month will be announced, however the traditional early short list of candidates is limited to Thomas Vanek (5 goals and 9 assists in January thus far), Andrej Meszaros (3g, 7a and +6), and Gentleman Joe Thornton (1g,8a and +7). Rounding out the short list is Mike Smith, Jiri Hudler and Ryan Malone with 32, 32 and 31 pool points respectively. This month's slow start to the new year means the three stars race is likely to boil down to jockeying for position between Thomas, Andrej and Joe. Official listing in just over a week's time, and here is the first three month's of the season: October: Mike Smith 1st *, Jiri Hudler 2nd *, Jarome Iginla 3rd * November: Joe Thornton 1st*, Andrej Sekera 2nd*, Jake Muzzin 3rd* December: Eddie Lack 1st*, Andrej Sekera 2nd*, Thomas Vanek 3rd* The star's of the month will be used to crown the team MVP at the end of the season, and overall that race is really heating up! Incidentally, Thornton, Vanek, Meszaros along with Andrej Sekera, Robert Bortuzzo, Jake Muzzin, Milan Michalek, Sami Salo, Ryan Malone and possibly Kevin Klein will all be in action this evening.
