security guard

You are speaking from a position of little knowledge, it is kind of humorous actually.

You obviously missed the part in this thread where I have said I worked security at one point in the past. Considering that experience I clearly do have an idea what I am talking about.

I will give you that working event security is much more relevant experience than guarding a building project that is in receivership all night, etc It seems you think that the majority of security positions that are being generalized about in this thread are of the "event" variety when they are not. The large percentage of "security guards" are sitting on some site or walking around a mall providing a presence where very little ever happens.

As someone who has worked in the security industry I can tell you that around 20-30% of guards are working there as a stepping stone towards a career in law enforcement, or to have money during school/pay off school. The other 70-80 are the 35+ crowd who are mostly made up of immigrant workers. Yes a lot of security work is standing by a site and making sure nothing happens. The other security work, which is filled by the 20-30% high profile guards who work in hospitals, casinos and hotels.

Honestly for a short term job to gain experience it is ok. The money is awful, but if you get into hospitals or another high profile site where you deal with people it will look good on a resume. It makes me cringe to work with the guards who take it so seriously and don't realize that they get paid 12$ an hour, but they think they are a cop.

I work with security guards and they do a lot more than just walk around or sit in a room doing nothing.

There are many different types of security work/guards so it's quite unfair to paint them all with the same negative brush. Maybe some of them fit that stereotype, but the ones I work with certainly are not like that.

Just wondering if there's any one who works or has worked as a security guard, what did u like about it? What did u hate about it? Who did u work for?

Me, I liked the days off(it was rotation), hated the hours, and the nightshift, and it was for the commissionaires.

I am currently working at the moment as one. It's great for me because I'll be going to school soon.

It lets me get some of my homework done at work, while also still receiving an income.

Edit: for people saying its easy. It can be depending on your site you work, sometimes you just sit in your car for 12 hours.

Other times it's difficult. Sometimes you're required to walk full construction sites for 12 straight hours in total darkness.

I say it can be risky too, depending on where the construction site is located. I mean, I don't think I want to work the graveyard shift in a construction site located in East Hastings or Whalley. You can just be a victim because of being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
