The only story that you need to acknowledge is the fact that he and 3 other cheaters on the hockey team were kicked off the hockey team for cheating.

Harvard University would not do something like this unless it was very, very clear about what took place. Remove Canuck blinders and step into reality for a minute. Patrick McNally royally screwed up.

It has not been confirmed that McNally has been kicked off of the team for cheating, for all we know something else may have occurred.
It is possible he cheated, but it is not for certain.
So yeah... you don't have the fully story yet.

From an article I just read:

In August, the university launched an investigation into students who enrolled in a government class for allegedly plagiarizing answers or inappropriately collaborating on the class’ final exam, which was take home.

Was he kicked off the team? Yes. Was it due to a poor decision by him? Yes.

All that matters, really. You've got to be a real moron to get yourself kicked out of school, basically.

For those that haven't seen the linked article from one of the other posters:

Four players have been removed from Harvard's official roster and according to a report in The Crimson, some of the removals may be related to an academic scandal that swept the university late this past summer.
...
In August, the university launched an investigation into students who enrolled in a government class for allegedly plagiarizing answers or inappropriately collaborating on the class’ final exam, which was take home.

So it doesn't seem like an accident from that description, although we may find out more if he appeals the decision. It might have been minimal, but still enough to warrant the removal from the roster. I assume this means suspension from Harvard overall as well although the article doesn't explicitly mention it.

I hope for some more detail, but in so far as how it relates to his hockey development, he could certainly use the playing time to improve without being thrown into it as the AHL/ECHL level. He might succeed in a specialist role, but I think we all pretty much agree he's not ready defensively at least yet.

Yea, purely my speculation is that they all had very similar answers on that take-home exam and they launched that investigation, saw they're all on the same team and just put 2 and 2 together.

a bit off topic, but why would you give out a take home exam and then say it is a closed book exam that makes no sense to me, I'm pretty sure the majority of students would not write that exam honestly

His name a long with the other 2 players are off the roster. Max Everson is a Leafs draft pick. The other player is not drafted.

Very embarrasing moment for him, and the canucks right now. He put up monster points towards the end of last season .

28 pts in 34 games as a Junior in College pro is very very very impressive for a defencemen. Harvard is the number 1 rated Universaty on the planet. Mcnally is a smart kid. Very embarrasing. That being said the way the Wolves are playing right now, Having Mcnally on that team is not much of a risk. 6'2 190 pound is ok right?

I agree 100%

It's like closing your front door when you leave your house but leaving it unlocked.

You would hope that they student wouldn't do that but by letting them take it home it completely opens up that avenue for them.

Sounds like a really stupid idea.

As well, Steve Michalek (their backup) was off the roster for a similar thing in November. I don't know if it's from the same exam, but he's now in the USHL I think.

Yeah I hope he gets a shot in the AHL to start, he might not be 100% ready but we can just see what he can do for a bit before sending him down to the K-Wings, that way atleast we can see his PP Tools, maybe he can help out the Wolves PP that has been pretty bad for the most part.

Good he withdrew from Harvard, means he will play some hockey this year. A week or so off should also help calm things down. In all honesty I don't blame the kid, I recall collaborating on take-homes as well - not so much as to have the same answers but more to share research.

I doubt he makes the Wolves. He might be able to beat out Miskovic, but Hunt seems to be an Arniel favourite. If Blain gets sent down before Andersson gets better then McNally might have a real shot. Here's to hoping he destroys the ECHL.

If you look at the prospects stats page, look at our defence.... that's pretty sad...... also the Wolves arent doing that great. its not like our team is one of the best. Nothing wrong with Seeing how Mcnally does at the AHL level. Nothing to lose.

Just remember guys, Harvard isn't really in the upper tier of college hockey. It's not like he was in Michigan, Minnesota or Maine.
The best players to come out of Harvard are: Dominic Moore, Craig Adams, Ted Donato, Ted Drury and Don Sweeney. In terms of development and if he really wants to be an NHLer, he should have immediately went to the USHL or went pro.

While it really sucks that he withdrawn (booted) from Harvard and missed out on a great opportunity for higher education, he can always go back later in life. He can potentially earn more money playing pro in a shorter time than working at a legit job.

Good he's gone from Harvard. Ivy league schools suck anyway in developing hockey players.

I’m not sure what McNally’s immediate hockey future holds, but he’s too old for the CHL and I wouldn’t expect him to turn pro any time soon, as McNally’s camp is working with the university to discuss reinstatement options.

McNally was drafted by the Indiana Ice in the 2010 USHL Entry Draft and as far as I know they still hold his rights, so perhaps that’s where he’s headed. Either way, we should know more soon. (EDIT: It appears as though the USHL has an age limit of 20 years old, which would rule McNally, 21, out).

So as per Devji, he can't play in Jr, can't play in USHL, so what are his other options? Find another Uni (unlikely 'if' it's a cheating situation), or sign contract w/ Canucks and play in ECHL or AHL?

I mean he could sign in Europe (Hansen joked Salzburg lol) but thats a longshot, long long long shot.

Realistically now that I see he's ineligable for USHL I just see him looking for a university that'll take him and if worse comes to worse, he'll play for the K-Wings/Wolves

Oh yes, forgot about Europe.

Should be an interesting scenario. Wonder if we'll ever find out what happened.

not the smartest move, but hopefully he rebounds from it and the canucks find him a home asap.

Maybe he can join up with AIK and he can start setting up Jensen. Try to create some chemistry early on.

Eventually...
"McNally up to Jensen. Jensen going in... he scores! Niklas Jensen has won it for the Vancouver Canucks!"
