Goodnews everyone!

I passed my CSIA level 1! Now I can teach as a ski instructor anywhere in Canada.

Learned so much from the course even if you don't plan on teaching it definitely refines how you ski, learned lots of ways how to change my skiing and of course to show people how to ski.

In other news, weather looks solid for the next week for the coastal mountains. I've enjoyed the sun but it was time for some new snow. Whistler and the locals should get a huge dump in the next few days. Had a solid run yesterday through the trees and more to come!

So tomorrow's the first ever Family Day in BC and all ski resorts are offering 50% off to BC residents.

I'll be heading to Whistler, sure it'll be busy but I would never pass up a 50% off on pass at Whistler

Mount Washington has just announced that it will join other resorts across B.C. in celebrating Family Day Feb. 11 with special events and discounts all day. The move is yet another reflection that Family Day is expected to be a huge economic boon for the 20 ski resorts offering special events. Not only that, but it could help attract more beginner skiers at a time when ski resort visits are declining.
Mount Washington will offer 50 per cent off all lift tickets, and free skiing for children aged five and younger. For more visit the website.
Last year, premier Christy Clark announced that the first B.C. Family Day would take place Feb. 11, 2013, a move that appealed to the ski resort industry, according to Canada West Ski Areas Association president David Lynn.
The naming of Feb. 11 as a holiday designated for family time "created significant opportunities for the BC Ski and Tourism Industries, by avoiding an overlap with similar holidays in other jurisdictions, on which many BC Ski Resorts are typically operating at capacity," he said in a press release.
It couldn't come at a better time.
Last week, Whistler's Pique News Magazine offered some disturbing numbers from the Canadian Ski Council, which noted a dramatic drop in beginner skiers and snowboarders in the last 10 years. According to the Council, there were about 2.3 million "active" skiers and snowboarders in Canada in 2010/11. Also, the Pique noted, the average number of days an "active" Canadian skied or snowboarded peaked in 2007/08 at 8.3. It declined steadily to 7.1 days by 2010/11.
The association offers a list of all the ski resorts participating in Family Day by holding special events and promotions, including 50-per-cent off regular ticket prices.

Mountains have been actually pretty good the last few weeks.

Oh, and Armada.. remember how I was asking for tips for my first time snowboarding?

I just went up to Cypress on friday and I only did blue runs the entire time. I can already carve and starting jumps now!

Right on buddy! Be sure to head up to Cypress sometime this week for some serious powder!

There's gonna be some real soft dry stuff this week with the freezing level being so low.

Friday is expecting 30+ cm dump through the day on top of everything else that will fall.

http://www.snow-fore...untain/6day/mid

I'm expecting almost up to 1 meter of snow by the end of this week, since Snow Forecast always gives a minimal snow forecast.

Congratulations! And I might be wrong, but I think you need a level 2 to teach at big mountain resorts like Whistler.

And I recently discovered that for every CSIA card (renewable after every year), you get a 40% discount off tickets for one time you visit Whistler. Hope that comes in handy.

Thanks!

No way! That's awesome news. I knew there were perks such as cheaper equipement and such but that's great to hear. I'll be going for my level 2 maybe in March.

Right on buddy! Torstein Horgmo is my favourite pro Border so check out his movie "Horgasm" which is actually on youtube.

Here it is

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U6lpBi39N78

If you really want to just watch a quick 5 minute video on youtube. Check out my playlist, have 200 videos of pure Snowboarding and ski videos. Best of the best

Almost at 70,000 views of it! Here it is:

https://www.youtube....feature=mh_lolz

Now I watch more ski movies than boarding movies but I've still seen a lot and I love them.

My favourite is "Art Of Flight", Travis Rice just kills it, musics amazing, editing is phenomenal.

Here's the trailer for Art Of Flight

Saw Torstein's movie a week or so I guess, whenever it came out on youtube. Loved it.
Art of Flight, not so much. I mean great scenery and all and I bet it would be unreal to do those locations, but it didn't appeal to me that much.

I'll have a look at that playlist as well, I'm interested in seeing this playlist!

Just from memory, some great snowboarding flicks are (I'm not going to link them as I'm in a rush, maybe in a bit, just youtube or torrent them):

DC's It
Picture.this (classic)
Twelve
Better Daze

If you're into ski videos as well, check out all the videos made by Poorboyz (Everyday's a Saturday, Revolver, etc they're all amazing)

Attack Of La Nina
One For The Road

...List goes on

Torstein's movie is absolutely sick. Seems like a cool guy and he's probably my favourite snowboarder now.

On a different note, Cypress got 18 cm of snow today and COUNTING!

And he's Norwegian

Went up yesterday and it was insane. Literally just hiding in the trees on the untouched freshies.

Going to be insane pow. If you're not on the mountains for the next 4 days you're missing out.

We've been blessed with that wonderful bitch La Nina just puking snow on us so late in the season.

Going to go to Hemlock on Sunday. I've never been but I hear its a gem and that they have the best driest pow of the local 4

Gonna try to find some cliffs and huck em!

Here's what I'm expecting

LOOKS UNREAL

Weeooow! Last run of the season for me. With exams coming up I won't be able to make it to the mountain but I've gone over 50 times this year, achieving my goal. Its snowing a bit on the locals hopefully rain stays away.

Anyone doing any spring riding?

I know Its still August but sadly for our southern hemisphere riders, their season is winding down but luckily for us, ours is creeping closer and closer. Can't wait to get this thread going.

In other news, I just downloading "The Wallisch Project", only 8 minutes long but its UNREAL. Only $2.99 on itunes so its virtually nothing, here's the trailer.

The season over here in Aus was pretty crappy mate, couple of early dumps of light dry snow that did not stick and then melted because of warm weather and rain , we had a 24 degree day in July and that night the minimum temp was 17 , the July average for max temp is 13 ! It starting puking in august and now most resorts have over a metre base which is solid not exceptional. I had a good trip to falls creek in early August , a close friend is the salamon and atomic guy here in Aus , he takes a bunch of next years skis up to the resort for demos , I give him a hand for about an hour each day and they pay for the trip and I get to ride a bunch of next years skis , it is the first time I have skied on a ski that is wider than 100mm under foot in pow , unbefrackinlievable I was charging harder than I ever have by the end of the day. It was puking when we got there but cover was still thin ao Saturday , puked all sat night and for the first time in 15 years he did not set up on sunday , we went and rode pow for 3 hours in the resort and then bumped into a couple of friends who run a back country ski-doo ski business they took us out to Mt.Mackay and we got about a dozen runs of totally untracked pow on every face of the mountain. Steves set up was fantastic , he had a trailer that he towed behind the ski-doo , I did not even have to take my ski's off ! I had a child in march and my elderly parents are very frail now so I have not had the time to ski as much as I wanted to , those responsibilities I avoided for nearly 50 years have finally caught up with me. Sep 7th-8th I have the 20 year reunion of the Hotham Boardriders , the oldest snowboard club of its type in the world , it was these guys that changed my life when I rolled up at Mt.Hotham over 20 years ago to do my first season I am really looking forward to this trip and I hope we do not lose too much snow before next week , temperatures are 6-8 degrees above average for the next week

When does the season start and end? I'm guessing its "spring" skiing there right now? ^^^

Also cool documentary, i'll be checking out. Especially good for those WW2 history lovers. Didn't know skiing had played such a vital role in the War. Respect to those who had fallen for us.

Speechless. Is the word I'll use for that.

Shows us, no matter what, you can always do what you love and that is truly unreal.

Makes me want to pick up a pair of Salomon skis to support them so they can get behind more people like Josh and help athletes like him do what they want to do.

Edit: Looked more into Josh, the guy is truly an inspiration. Had my jaw dropped while I watched him do this.

Terrific news if it's already snowing in Cypress. Just got myself a Silver Pass, hopefully I will get my money's worth.

I have finally submitted to peer pressure and will switch to the "dark side", going from skiing to snowboarding. Even got myself a 2nd-hand board for like 50 bucks (crummy board vs pricey board.... be the same when I'm on my bum 90% of the time) to learn the basic.

Any useful tips for those switching from skiing to boarding?

All you need to do is go to Cypress 10 time to get its value worth and just bend those knees.

WOO! We're in NOVEMBER and some resorts are starting to open! (Mammoth in California)

I got a job on Cypress Mountain super stoked to start! Expecting to open mid-November.

Also Whistler Blackomb announced their opening day yesterday for November 28th. Still waiting to know when we're opening up here at Cypress but we've gotten a little bit of snow and the snow machines are blasting out snow.

Anyone get any new gear? I'm kind of poor right now so I'm just gonna keep my Armada ARV skis for the season and maybe pick up a new jacket.

I hate the Australian summer, give me snow any day.

Olympic snowboard and ski cross course revealed

FIS today released the snowboard cross and ski cross course designs for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (RUS). The course is located in the Extreme Park at Rosa Khutor ski area.
This custom designed course, which was created in cooperation between the Freestyle Skiing and Snowboarding disciplines, will provide one of the most dramatic settings for two of the youngest and most exciting FIS Olympic events. Snowboard cross (SBX) was introduced at the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games, while ski cross (SX) was successfully introduced at the Vancouver 2010 Olympics.
The 1250 meter-long course in Sochi, which was designed over the last four years, will consist of a series of eight turn sections, punctuated by a series of jumps and roller sections and is sure to be a strong and exciting test for the Olympic snowboarders and skiers.
In the cross event, a group of competitors (four skiers, or six snowboarders) launch themselves from the starting gate which drops open onto the course. After each round, the top half of the field (two skiers or three snowboarders) advance to the next round. The final medal rankings are determined by the positions in the final.
For both Freestyle Skiing and the Snowboarding, the cross competition represents perhaps the most complete display of talent and skills, with jumps, turns, gates, speed, and head-to-head competition testing every skill set.
Skiers and snowboarders will share the same start and finish areas in Sochi, with around 80% of the cross course sections to be shared as well. There will be one area where the course will split into separate ski and snowboard sections to specifically target each discipline's skills. In total, 64 ski cross and 64 snowboard cross ladies and men will compete on the course during four days, with each heat clocking a time between 1:15 and 1:30 minutes.
The course was successfully tested during the 2012/13 World Cup season when the Olympic test events were held in February, 2013. Feedback about the course in both disciplines was overwhelmingly positive.
The FIS Technical Advisors David Ny (SWE) and Nicolas Vaudroz (SUI) have built numerous World Cup and World Championship courses and their efforts, in cooperation with the FIS cross specialist and former German Olympian Martin Fiala, were used to create an exceptionally dynamic and challenging Olympic cross venue.
Martin Fiala, FIS, who competed in Vancouver 2010 as a ski cross competitor for Germany stated: “The Olympic programme always provides some extra special characteristics from our World Cups and World Championships courses. The cross course in Rosa Khutor challenges all skills from both snowboarding and skiing. I would like to thank all involved from the Rosa Khutor ski area, National Ski Association(s), from the Organising Committee and also to the course designers and the course builders for their hard pre-work on the road to the competitions and wish all the teams and athletes a safe, successful and exciting Olympic Games in Sochi 2014 for what could become a true highlight of the programme.”

"These are the things to keep in mind. These are not just academic exercises. We're not analyzing the media on Mars or in the eighteenth century or something like that. We're dealing with real human beings who are suffering and dying and being tortured and starving because of policies that we are involved in, we as citizens of democratic societies are directly involved in and are responsible for, and what the media are doing is ensuring that we do not act on our responsibilities, and that the interests of power are served, not the needs of the suffering people, and not even the needs of the American people who would be horrified if they realized the blood that's dripping from their hands because of the way they are allowing themselves to be deluded and manipulated by the system."
