nitronuts
Great read, couldn't agree more. It would make sense considering we are part of the frontier of the country and the 3rd most populated province. The nearest army base is all the way in Edmonton, not exactly close by: http://www.vancitybuzz.com/2013/02/reduced-coast-guard-coverage-b-c-has-no-army/ And with the recent Kitsilano Coast Guard base closure in Vancouver, the federal government claimed it was all about money - to save $700,000 - even though it makes all the sense to keep it open considering it's the busiest Coast Guard base in the country, plus we have the country's busiest and largest port and harbour. Two days after the sudden closure, in the same week, they announce a new $6.6-million Coast Guard base for a fishing village of 2,500 people in Newfoundland. How exactly is this about money again? Electro Rock
I guess they figure this region will be under Chinese control before long anyway, I wonder when we get our first PLA facility?

Electro Rock
How does that have anything to do with the issue under discussion? Quite bizarre reasoning. Besides In the event of a public emergency being declared due a natural disaster Canadian Forces can be deployed from outside BC and there is also an agreement with the US to allow for American personnel to assist and vice versa. http://www.dhs.gov/xlibrary/assets/policy/btb-compendium-of-us-canada-emergency-management-assistance-mechanisms.pdf
Wetcoaster
I was half jokingly referring to B.C.'s impending status as a Special Economic Zone, and as such, primary disaster response would be the PLA's and not the CF's problem.
Tom-The-Great
my dad was in the military for 25+ years, and he was posted to CFB Chilliwack just before it got shut down.. I still think that was a dumb move by the gov't
Electro Rock
Do you have a reputable link setting out this policy for "B.C.'s impending status as a Special Economic Zone"?
fourminute
fudning exponentially greater for nwefoundland is outrageous but b.c. can handle disasters without army with just blue cross or other agencies well so its not wrong to cut back spending on that
Lancaster
There are like dozens of reserve army bases in this province.....
Wetcoaster
I am sorry Comrade, my CPC security clearance is not sufficient! However there is a thing called "personal observation" not just in the local context but elsewhere where so-called demographic invasion is evident, China's takeover of Siberia being one example. The Brahma Bull
We are so screwed after Cascadia goes off. Question: Will the housing market crash? Everyone talks about how expensive the houses are in Van, but something tells me people will be less willing to live here after the Big One. Those aftershocks will go on for a long, long time. When the Big One hits, be prepared to be on your own for a few days (at least). That will be a very sad day.

Wetcoaster
Yes, I can imagine we would all love being directed by US military and emergency personnel when and where we can move about. I can guess the public's appreciation for their assistance would tire very quickly.

Wetcoaster
Oh yeah and since disaster response is primarily a matter for the province, oddly enough BC actually has an agency dedicated to such things - Emergency Management BC http://embc.gov.bc.ca/index.htm They have detailed plans disaster/hazard response: http://embc.gov.bc.ca/em/hazard_plans/hazard_plans.html And not surprisingly a specific plan to deal with the earthquake hazard in BC: http://embc.gov.bc.ca/em/hazard_plans/EQ_Plan.pdf
