Gurn
Then raise the price of the food. It is the employer's responsibility to pay his/her employees, not the customers. Employee wages come from the employer's pockets not mine, not directly anyway. If you agree to do a job for x money don't expect more for doing your dang job. If you get more great, if not and you don't like it get another job.Cops are there to serve and protect but I don't tip them. Simple concept really, do the job you get paid to do. That's What She Said
15% for okay-good service, 10% for sub-par. Never had such bad service that I didn't want to tip, but then again I don't go to restaurants much and I don't expect more than getting my order right and delivering the food within a reasonable time frame. Don't usually tip for take out if I'm just ordering one or two dishes but I'll tip $2-3 for a large order. I rarely travel but my friend who works in the hotel business says that you'll probably get better service if you tip on your first night. A somewhat long but interesting post about tipping: http://waitbutwhy.com/2014/04/everything-dont-know-tipping.html
TigerWilliams
I used to be a generous tipper as I had worked both as a server and delivery driver. Have to say that I think that in the low to mid range 'sit down' restaurants (thinking White Spot, Red Robin, Earls, Cactus, etc) the service is now so incredibly bad that 75% of the time the server does not deserve a tip at all Taking an order and checking on you once to see "..if everything is ok?" is hardly worth 10% let alone 15%+. Truthfully, I'd rather the restaurant just raise the price of the meal, raise the wage and abolish the tip if that's truly the economic relationship they say exists (I'm not convinced of that, but that's another issue)
RussianFanGhost
If you can afford the meal you should be able to afford the tip Who ever said this could not be further from the truth. Do you have any idea how much money you can save by not tipping the full 10-15%? If the average tip is between 2-4$, saving that money twice a week would yield a free night out every month. That means you can afford to go out a dozen times more a year than if you continued to tip, clearly affordability is in an inversed relationship to "tipping well":, Think about it, I did. Raoul Duke
Holy eff this convo as started up again?? Seriously, if you don't tip (unless it's horrible service), you are a dick.
JohnTavares
Holy eff this convo as started up again?? Seriously, if you don't tip (unless it's horrible service), you are a dick. Only because society says you are. I tip ~10% because I don't want to cause a scene or ruin someone's day. If it's really good service I'll tip 15. I much rather have them raise the prices of the food and make tips optional. With this kind of system, waitresses/waiters will work harder as the tip incentive comes into play only if you have good service. Otherwise you will make enough to "live" but just enough. If tips were optional and prices were raised, I would still give ~10% for good service, and less for lesser service.

sakage.shinga
I will tip 10% for basic service (e.g. they bring your food, does NOT come at least once to see if you're OK), 15% for friendly service, and 20% if it was exceptional or if I had an issue or request that required extra attention. I will only tip when I eat in (or full service gas stations & maids) and NEVER when I pickup the food myself (although I might leave spare change). I know some people insists that even pickup orders require tipping, but please, I don't agree with that and it's my bloody money. I will absolutely NOT tip the following 1) Fast food restaurants 2) Coffee shops 3) Dude that opens your door because the restaurant makes you wait for him to do so I sincerely belive that tipping in Canada has become a detriment to the overall service quality received by paying customers. These people expect the tips and are so used to getting it that they've gone lazy (generally speaking, obviously).
