Tipping Vs Not Tipping

I only tip if service is exceptional. Tips shouldn't be an entitlement in Canada.

Tip entitlement was fostered by the government who created the 'liquor server minimum wage' which is lower than the normal mimimum wage.

So drunk I thought the thread was Tripping vs Not Tripping. The comments confused me at first.

But I tip well if the person is fun or someone I respect or feel I would hang out with. Otherwise I tip them 10%-15% depending on how nice the place. If they annoy me or have slow or rude service then I leave a note saying something rude and no tip.

I don't tip cabs though or maids.

Have you ever had a waitress/waiter/bartender get mad at you for a lack of tip? I had one freak out at me cause she wasn't happy with the amount.

We had a waitress follow us outside the Kingshead Pub and scream at a group of us as we were leaving but she had a really good reason. We used to go there every Friday for drinks after work and the week before, my old dbag roommate, who didn't feel like going that night, stole the $40 tip on about $120, she got a big tip because she was busting her hump, running up and down the stairs for us and I think he left her $1.50 or something. The brutal thing is that we all worked at restaurants at the time so we knew exactly how she felt and so did my soon to be ex roommate.

Tipping at a restaurant is part of the social contract. You agree to tip when you sit down at a restaurant. Anything less than 15% is only appropriate if the service was really poor. And you also have to keep in mind that the server doesn't control everything that goes on in the restaurant. If the food is poor or slow to come, that's probably not the servers fault, and as long as they handle it well, they still deserve 15%.

This is true if you can't afford to tip you can't afford a meal.

However if they've for something to offend you then yes a tip isn't mandatory

Recently I was on a job (I'm self employed working by contract). My client called and wondered if she could bring us something in from town for dinner as we were twenty minutes from the nearest cafe. I said sure and I'll settle up with you when you get here. She brought it out and gave me the reciept on which she had tipped 5.00. At first I was going to make an issue of it but then just paid it. Should I have said something and insist she cover the tip?... I wouldn't be inclined myself to tip for takeout I picked up myself.

Why dont you tip cabs? They're very likely providing you with the most important service of your evening, getting you home safely and sparing you a potential impaired driving charge.

I don't tip for take-out. If the service is average I tip a clean 10%… if its shits I give 0%… if the person serving me makes my day they get a 15-20% tip

The new haircut place I have been going to prompts for tips as well.. caught me off guard but since I plan on going there regularly I've been paying just over 10% tip on a $25 haircut = ~$28

The problem is that restaurant owners take advantage of the fact that customers tip, and thus keep server wages low. They also claim that they can keep food prices low as well. The argument from restaurant owners is that, if you take away tipping, they'll raise the price of the food to compensate for the increased wages they'll have to pay the servers to stick around.

So, if tipping goes out of favour, it'll just mean that the bill will be more expensive. Either way you're going to be paying some extra money.

as it is, most people can't afford to eat at a restaurant. Raise the prices, more people eat at home, you go out of business.

When you go to a restaurant/bar in a group of 8 or more, they usually add the gratuities to the bill ahead of time. How do you feel about tipping on top of that included amount? I still tip, but may go down to 10%

Not a penny more, unless the server clearly explained that it was there, and that they had no control over it. Often, the servers have the option to add it on or not, depending on the system. Having it added basically implies they don't trust me to leave an appropriate tip.

If the service is poor and I get the auto-gratuity added, the manager and I will be discussing it. A lot of servers take advantage of this system to give piss-poor service to larger tables.

Glad this thread was created. Generally I am a big tipper but I have to admit I find tip functions at fast food/Deli counters annouying. If you are ordering something from a counter and picking up the food there then why tip? Generally I just a tip a dollar a deli counter/fast food places. Is this small tip considered rude or better than nothing?

Again - raising prices means that you wouldn't have to tip. That's the trade-off. Restaurant owners say that tipping lets them keep server wages low. In effect they are passing the cost of wages to the customer. But if nobody tips, server wages would have to be increased. Hence, menu prices would rise.

The point is that, ideally, you'd pay the same amount at the end of the day - either through the tip, or through the increased price of the food.

i have gotten the automatic gratuity when dining alone or even with a friend but i always tell them to the remove it or i won't pay never had a place not remove

it's pathetic that places think they can do this doesn't matter if it's 1 or 10 people at the table automatic tipping should be illegal

I'm sure that's not a personal thing, the server had probably just been skunked too many times by cheap people and wanted to guarantee that they at least get something. After all, the servers have to pay out to the kitchen staff so if somebody cheaps-out that's a waste of their time and basically money they have to pay out of pocket.

And I'm sure the server's also gotten some great tips that are a hell of a lot better than the automatic tip. I don't take it personally, but I'm not going to reward her for being unwilling to take the risk. Expecting a tip on top of the autograt is basically the equivalent of playing with the house's money at a casino.
