The 2014 World U17 Hockey Challenge takes place on November 2nd - November 8th.

The U17s camp have began for Canada. It holds potential 2016 1st overall picks (Benson, Day, Chychrun). Games will begin with colours.

Today Red faces off against Black at 4PM Pacific and White faces off against Green at 7PM Pacific. You can watch the games here and list of games: http://stats.hockeycanada.ca/schedule/league_instance/19901?subseason=160876

Day - White Team
Benson - Green Team
Chychrun - Gold Team

Some notable players that were high picks in their league are: Luke Green (1st overall - QMJHL), Samuel Girard (3rd overall - QMJHL), Evan Fitzpatrick (4th overall - QMJHL), Josh Anderson (3rd overall - WHL), Travis Barron (3rd overall - OHL), Pierre-Luc Dubois (5th overall - QMJHL), Brett Howden (5th overall - WHL), Pascal Laberge (2nd overall - QMJHL), Adam Mascherin (2nd overall - OHL), Michael McLeod (5th overall - OHL), Nolan Patrick (4th overall - WHL), Brandon Saigeon (4th overall - OHL), Sam Steel (2nd overall - WHL).

Day should dominate, he's 6'2 220 pounds and is an elite skater. That alone should make him stand out and be the best out there.

This camp is to learn the Canadian System, get them involved with Hockey Canada like their slogan for the U17 "Canadian Way". Many of these players will be in the U18s and U20s after this.

“We want them leaving here knowing what the Canadian way is, that they’re going to play hard, they’re committed players, they’re character players, they accept their roles. The Canadian way was really borne out of the Olympic team and the performance that they had in Sochi, everything from how that team performed to how they prepared. It’s playing hard, it’s playing with character and when other teams push, we push back harder. Those are the messages we’re trying to give every day, all day." Said Scott Salmond, Hockey Canada's vice president of hockey operations.

This is the first step into the program of excellence for these young kids.

Bean is going to be a star defender as well. Canada has some solid D prospects.

I was also impressed with Shaw. Kid is not big but he has good vision and is surprisingly strong on the puck considering his stature. Kryski (who can really move) looked good with Shaw on his line.

Overall, pretty good game. Better than I would expect from kids with summertime rust on their game.

Yeah, Shaw is feisty kid, if he grows a bit he'll look good for a 2016 1st rounder.

Sam Steel and Jake O'Donnell had hell of games, they were the black team's star.

Agreed, Steel and O'Donnell looked really good. Pretty much a toss up between Steel and Fabbro for player of the game honours IMO.

Thanks for posting the link(s) btw, wouldn't have watched the games them without it.

Benson hasn't been too noticeable this game, Day is really exciting to watch. His skating, shooting, puck skills are unreal for his age, he's by far looking like the best player out of the two games. Day's defence partner, David Quenneville looks really good he can skate, move the puck up the ice and both of these players make a really good pairing. Both are OFDs with alot of skill.

But whenever Benson has a scoring chance he makes it worth with a nice shot.

Edit: I agree about Benson (although that was a wicked shot he scored with).

The White team's D is >>>>>>>> Green team's D. Day, Quenneville and McKinstry are dynamite. Man, Team Canada is going to be tough to beat with the defence they have.

I agree but they'll be spread out on 3 different teams which is better than 5 because a better chance of us winning and more higher competition.

The D will be our biggest strength going into the tournament at November.

Wow William Bitten scored a beauty.

Sam Steel, Samuel Girard, Jake Bean (nice one - Kryten), anchored that PP for black. These are the 3 clear top players for black, I think Black is the best team at this tournament.

Blue won though.

--------------------------

7PM - Green vs Gold, Gold has Jakob Chychurn and Green has Tyler Benson. 2 potential #1 overall picks for the 2016 NHL draft, Chychurn is a must-see player. Tyler Benson didn't look that good last game though, expect more from him.

Blue Vs Black was a fun game to watch, good to see some nastiness (Pezzetta at the center of it). Steel and the usual suspects standouts again but Blue has some steady players as well.

Michael McLeod is going to be a solid player in the future, guy is strong and plays harder than most of the other players on the ice. Raddysh is also a solid player, Otters going to love this kid.

Gold Vs Green was a massacre lol. Gold clearly better and Tyson Jost lives up to the hype (kid is a dynamite talent). His linemate, Kaspick showed some decent skill and playmaking ability as well. I didn't notice Chychrun a whole lot, although admittedly I wasn't paying as close attention to this game as I was the previous one.

Benson seems to be fairly frustrated out there. He needs to get it together.

Tyson Jost had a great game, every shift he was out there playing offence and noticeable.

Jakob Chychrun is a great defenceman, he's big, calm, a great skater, can make tape to tape passes from everywhere on the ice. I love this kid, he's like a veteran out there if a hard forecheck is coming he can flip it out of the zone just like that. He can be physical but he has amazing stick work. He can catch a player from the opposing team's blueline if the opposing player was on a breakaway.

Benson is just off, doesn't seem like he's getting anything done out there. His team has no more games left (I think) so I'm wondering if he'll get named to the U17 team in November, he's going to need a big season for sure though.

Next game is: Sunday, Red vs Blue here: http://stats.hockeycanada.ca/game/show/7919790?subseason=160876&referrer=1213372&referrer=1213372

Red vs White this afternoon is on: http://stats.hockeycanada.ca/game/show/7919795?subseason=160876&referrer=1213372&referrer=1213372

Ang, Mete, Fabbro are very impressive for red. I think Red is the top team though they are losing to White 1-0.

I like Day, Quenneville from white on the defence side, both can side and shoot the puck hard. Top defencemans at the camp IMO. Samuel Guilbault shows good vision and nice passing skills, really like his game he's a #11. Should make one of the three national teams.

This is the first place game.

Blue vs Gold is also going on here: http://stats.hockeycanada.ca/game/show/7919796?subseason=160876&referrer=1213372&referrer=1213372

Chychurn is on team Gold (not playing though).

Team White wins first place at the summer development camp for the U17s!

Some players who impressed me as this tournament ended:

Black - Samuel Girard, he's a great skater with smart instincts. Really gifted player, he can QB a PP and make beautiful passes. Reminds me of Giordano and I think we'll see him on the U18s next year.

Sam Steel is a great player, he's a complete player who has a high compete level. He can skate, shoot, pass, cut passes, play great defence and he isn't like alot of the players who run around chasing the puck. He is a future top 6 player in the NHL, I can see him as a player want on their lineup who you can always trust to get a goal or protect the lead. He's born with these great skills and his vision is on another level, he's always a step ahead of everybody else.

Jake Bean is someone I haven't really tried to look at for his first game, I saw him make a couple really nice moves which lead me to watch him more. He is a really great player to watch, he rarely makes a mistake and his timing on plays is great. Going to keep an eye on him on the Hitmen while watching Jake Virtanen.

Blue - Luke Green. I love this kid, he wins every puck battle, he's always in position, he can skate the puck up and push the play toward the other end. He's extremely smart, he cuts passes, shuts players down, ties stick when a puck comes toward him and he's a great skater. He went 1st overall in the QMJHL entry draft for a reason, going to love watching this kid. Future top 10 pick in the 2016 NHL Draft. Does everything at a great level.

William Bitten. The blue forwards weren't that great IMO, but Bitten has a high motor, fast kid and has some terrific hands. He scored a beauty in his 2nd game SH, he came off the bench received a pass and almost beat his defender but got the puck out of the corner pulled up a scored a beauty of a goal. He's has a nice set of hands, fast, and makes positive things happen when he's on the ice.

Red - Victor Mete. This kid is phenomenal, he's so smart on the ice. He can make tape to tape passes and lead a rush into the offensive zone, he can skate around the offensive zone and thread needles. He reminds me of Duncan Keith the way he just skates and looks like he isn't even trying when he winds up to skate. He's also great defensively, playing simple, smart defence that can just skate the puck out of the defensive zone or flip it out.

Dante Fabbro. What can I say? Booming shot, amazing skater, physical, strong defensively, reliable, smart. He's everything when he winds his stick up to shoot a slapper it's going to hurt. Reminds me of Matt Dumba, I love this kids game. He's going to fit in with the NHL if he keeps it up and grows a couple inches.

Jonathan Ang. Ang stands out, he's quick, deadly and has a nice pair of hands. Defenceman want to give him the puck when he gets off the bench he forces defenders back. Fun to watch and makes something big happen when he's on the ice. I think he can improve on his passing and using teammates though.

Gold - Pascal Corbeil. He has something in his game, he can skate, he jumps up on defence to close in on a defender and he can rush the puck up the ice. I think he'll be a under the radar type of guy who will succeed at the NHL level.

Tyson Jost. His performance was outstanding, I didn't get too see him much but his points talk big.

Green - Tyler Benson. Stood out to me but in a negative way. He was terrible for a 1st overall pick in the bantam draft. I expected more, hope he can rip it up in the WHL. The rest of team Green was hard to notice since the team overall was quite bad.

White - Sean Day. Great, he's just so much better than everybody else. Looked like he was facing elementary kids with his patience, skating, so easy. He made it look easy every shift.

David Quenneville. This guy has good skating ability, he can push the puck the puck up and has a hard slap shot. I think he's a complete defenceman. He's a dynamic defenceman aswell, he can explode offensively with a coast to coast rush or just use his stick to keep forwards to the outside

Ryely McKinstry. McKinstry really stood out to me, he's not a guy who'll make risky moves but he can contribute offensively. He can skate well, he has a good shot but most importantly he's a smart player who can get the puck out of his own end, he's a reliable defenceman who is an all around really smart, safe defenceman with a good offensive game.

Team Red:

Wow Team Red has Sean Day, Dante Fabbro, Victor Mete leading the back-end, I love these players' game. Very good offensively and defensively. The offence is really good aswell, Kryski, Mascherin, Bitten, Patrick, Brown leading the forwards.

Team White will be 2nd IMO, the line of Jost-Kaspick-O'Leary were the best line at the summer camp, they'll be on White with help on offence from Ang, Barron and Howden (Quinton's brother). White also has Chychurn and Green as the top 2 defenceman on White who are very talented.

Team Black will be fighting in a 3rd place game IMO it has very talented forwards in Steel, Benson and Saigeon along with some solid defenceman in Bean, McKinstry, Girard.

I think we could see the 3 Canadian teams get all the 3 medals but USA might get bronze, I see Red winning gold against White and Black winning bronze against USA.

I'm not familiar with the U-17 tournament. Why does Canada have 3 teams and every other country only has 1?

This tournament had 5 regional teams prior to this year. Pacific, West, Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic. They didn't like the formation due to teams not being as competitive and they want the 3 best teams of Canada not the 5 best regional teams.

Canada develops the most NHL players and the best NHL players so they want to have more than 1 team to ensure that alot of kids get exposure to this first step of the Program of Excellence and it's a step to becoming better hockey players.

The same U17 tournament took place earlier this year that ended in January, this one starts in November a little bit early so it's going to be 2 2014 U17 tournaments which is quite weird.

You can expect a podium sweep though.

Exhibition games today. Team Red includes Day, Patrick, 2017 NHL Draft Eligible player that has 12 points in 14 games in the WHL!! Fabbro who is an excellent defenceman, Mascherin (top pick in the OHL Draft), Michael McLeod (top player for the 2016 Draft).

Team White includes Chychurn, the trio of O'Leary-Kaspick-Jost who ripped up the U17 Camp, Jost has 16 points in 14 games in the BCHL! He is only 16!

Edit: Games aren't working on those links. Too bad, HC said they would have been.
