Ilya Kovalchuk. Posted October 9, 2016 Share Posted October 9, 2016 PHILADELPHIA -- Anze Kopitar was acquired by the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for long time captain Claude Giroux. Along with Giroux, Robert Thomas was also sent to Los Angeles who was a former second round pick by the Philadelphia Flyers.This franchise needed a major change down the middle as things were not going well in Philadelphia for a long time with their captain [Claude] Giroux leading the way. This trade was to help shake up things and try to bring some different leadership into the Flyers roster. Anze Kopitar has experience in the playoffs. Anze will also immensely help Anderson MacDonalds game as well who will be playing on the wing with him this season with Corey Perry slotting into the right wing. Robert Thomas was also a valuable piece given up in this draft who had two very good seasons in Lehigh Valley putting up top 5 numbers in each of the last two seasons. However, with the Flyers cupboard filled with young forwards coming up such as Gabe Vilardi, Ari-Pekka Tevanen, Oskar Stal Lyrenas it was more palatable to the Flyers.
