  1. I think everyone can agree that Gaunce has kind of been left behind, he's still a 1st rounder but people like talking about McCann, Shinkaruk, Horvat, Virtanen, Cassels more than Gaunce maybe because they're more "exciting" players or higher draft picks or newer prospects. Gaunce was ranked as 13th for NA skaters in the final CSS rankings for his draft, Horvat was 15th. 2013 was a deeper draft you could say but Gaunce shouldn't have low expectations.

  2. He's getting better with every game, he's good at top speed but his first few steps still need some work. Maybe it takes him alot of effort to start get going on his skates because when he's tired he doesn't move his feet at all. He just walks on ice and told Dorsett to dump it in, I hope he can work on that, it'd make a way better skater.

He's also really hard to knock off the puck like Crosby or Stamkos. Really like that part of his game, heavy player.

  3. Still, there's no denying that having Virtanen's heavy RH shot on the power play would have been sweet.

Yeah but I have questions about if he's that type of player who can find open space and learn how to get separation and find the soft spots for one-timers or open shots, in the slot. Maybe above the dots would work for hard one-timers and just keep firing.

  4. We won, so it's all good, however Duclair missed multiple wide-open nets, Fabbri fell on himself to get hurt, and Petan faded fast after one game against the Slovaks. Skill.

Petan was 2nd in scoring for the tournament. I guess that means we should only count points playing against every other team than Denmark and Germany? Duclair started the scoring in the GMG and was obviously one of our most skilled players. Fabbri basically missed 3 games and still finished higher in scoring than Virtanen.

  5. Couture was allowed to graduate from the OHL and then given a year in the AHL whereas the Canucks rushed Horvat into the lineup as an underage. They may wind up having similar careers, but they they're being developed entirely differently. Couture was given a better chance to be the best he could be in my opinion.

Yeah they did but how they play I think is pretty similar. Horvat is probably more heavy though, slower skater not by much and less creative with the puck.
  6. I have watched him play for his WHL team more than a handful of times.

What I've seen is a player that knows how to pass and utilize his linemates when he's used in his proper position and has chemistry with them.

People seem to latch on to criticisms and don't recognize when the player has improved on those weaknesses.

That's not what hockey IQ is, he knows how to pass the puck great. But my concern is his play away from the puck, I don't think Virtanen does a good job of reading a play or having the smarts to be in the right position for a shot or know where the puck will be.

  7. Where do I disrespect Swedish players? I couldn't care less where someone's from what I care about is what there all about.

The Canucks have had two Swedish captains and close to 20 years of our top offensive players being Swedes and it hasn't worked. It's not a Swedish thing it's a change in philosophy on who will be driving the bus and be the poster child on Benning and Linden's Canucks of the future.

Most people get it.....but some have to keep pulling out this stupid......"I would have preferred we drafted ?????"

Don't confuse my support for Virtanen and Benning for anything else other than I am happy they are going this direction and I really like the pick.

We came one game away from winning the cup, that's as close as you will get and we didn't one it but guess who were the leaders of this team when we came that close? The Swedes. I doubt we'll get that close now since the Sedins are declining but it came very, very close to working, whatever that philosophy was.

Zetterberg, Lidstrom, Datsyuk, Rafalski were the leaders for Detroit when they won the cup. What are you trying to say? European hockey won't win you a cup? Because Europeans won the cup for Detroit.

I don't have a problem with the pick but what's wrong with Nylander? Because he's Swedish?

  8. This. The SEL is full of slow, soft-skating pansies who need wide open space to keep from falling down on their own, sorry. That's why 18yr old kids can put up some decent points there. It's actually the right league for him at the moment, so he's less likely to get hurt, but that being said, Nylander's been slowing down in that league after a decent start.

That's pretty funny to hear considering the best players our franchise have ever had were drafted from the Swedish Elite League.

The only one embarrassing themselves is you and every other idiot still parroting about our GM not knowing what he's doing.

You go on about Nylander and his scoring prowess like it's the only thing that matters in building a team. Jake has attributes in his game that Nylander can only dream about and likewise for Virtanen.

Until your boy can be an effective NHL playoff player why don't you just shut up about how pretty he looks. It's the World Juniors?? Schroeder, Rodin, Paajarvi, B.Schenn, Hodgson, Reway, Forsling....do these names mean anything to you? Or how about Dal Colle, Fleury..?

JB wants to build a big strong, fast in your face type playoff type team and all you can seem to see is Nylander his skill, his points (mostly pp) and his pretty hair. The way it's looking maybe Carolina should have drafted Forsling instead of Fleury? TL and JB don't want there hopes of winning a cup pinned on a player like Nylander. His dad was a point producing puss and it's most likely the beauty queen is going to be the same.

Virtanen was the better pick, it's our guy and I'm certain watching him that he will effect a playoff series more than your figure skater.

And what are the Sedins? They aren't some big physical guys, they play with skill and that's the reason why they are the best players we've ever had on our team.

I like physical, hard-hitting hockey that is important in the playoffs but you need a mix of players. If you guys think we're going to win with some big, Canadian gritty players well then you're 100% wrong. You need skill and speed in the playoffs aswell (Hossa, Krejci, Gaborik, Malkin). Alot of European players can show off their skill in the playoffs, remember Malkin's big playoff run? He was playing fantastic.

So much disrespect to Swedish hockey players. Nylander is just a "soft swede" but let's ignore the fact that our best players of all-time are Swedish?

  9. His biggest problem IMO is that he isn't very good at getting open for shots. Maybe a reason he isn't on the PP which connects to not being smart enough to read the game, I'm not going to say the scouts are wrong and say his hockey IQ isn't lacking because it kind of is. He has a hard shot, good speed and it sounds all good on paper but it's only useful when he has the puck. In the NHL, he won't have the puck on his stick for a long time so he has to get open to get the puck and get a shot off.

I don't think it's a big concern but it's a concern, you would expect him to be firing one-timers with his great shot but that hasn't happened. He's a good passer though. The "look he got an assist, his hockey IQ isn't that bad" is dumb, there's more to being a smart hockey player than being able to pass the puck just like what I mentioned in this post.

  10. Captain material, Horvat seems like the same type of guy. It'll be cool to see a transition of leaders like the Sedins, Burrows, Bieksa, Kesler (already gone) to guys like Virtanen, Horvat and possibly Cassels, McCann and Gaunce.

  11. What I really want to see is him get open more. McDavid knows how to set up players even Fabbri can make a beautiful pass so I think Virtanen needs to find ways to get open and then fire a one-timer.

Maybe they go back to the original lines that they had against Slovakia and in the pre-tournament games.

  12. Reminds me alot like Couture, said it earlier but I like the way they both skate, similar size, they play with the puck in similar ways. Read the play well, hope he turns out just like Couture.

  13. Currently they have one righty on the 3rd line (Fabbri) and Virtanen is the only righty on the fourth line. I'm saying if you move Virtanen up to the 3rd and replace him with one of the lefties and move Fabbri to center, (because fabbri has easily been the best of the three,) you're putting three lefties on the fourth. i don't know how that's saying a 3rd line of lefties is better.

And also, he hasn't performed better than Lazar or Duclair to earn a top six spot.

    Fabbri is a lefty.

  14. I was at the game tonight and I couldn't agree more! His instincts and puck protection in the offensive zone are coming along quite nicely but you're so right about him being passive.

It seems that when he's breaking out he's too scared there's going to be a turnover that he isn't joining the rush in till he's 100% sure the puck is getting out of the zone. While that's smart in a sense, the center needs to push the pressure up to alleviate pressure on the wingers, so in turn, if he's not moving he's putting more pressure on his wingers to get the puck out.

The fact that he's doesn't explode out of the defensive zone is fine though because that can be taught where defensively instincts are much harder to teach.

Yeah but the good thing is is that these things will get better with experience, I don't know alot of veteran centres who are that passive. That might be a problem right now though.

I think he might be a little passive because he's not confident in his skating to get back and try to stop a scoring opportunity if a turnover occurs, I'd like him to work on his skating a little bit more just the acceleration.

  15. They don't scratch players, I think the IIHF allows them to have 20 skaters on the bench, so that means no one in the pressbox. If a forward gets injured you'll have 12 forwards and be able to continue rolling 4 lines.

Just something I like about the guys we have drafted lately is that they are good overall players, physical or atleast not soft and they can skate well. Sedins are great players that have magic that may not ever be seen again in hockey but I just never liked how we were known around the league as a "soft team" and the "sisters" were our best players. Sedins are sometimes pretty one-dimensional, I don't want to criticize too much but I like what guys like Virtanen, Horvat, Shinkaruk, McCann can bring to the line-up once they start hitting their primes and hopefully are in the NHL. They bring grit, speed, all-around, skilled game.

That's one thing I'm looking forward to in the future and Virtanen brings speed, skill and alot of physicality. Something I like in players, exciting players, I'm jealous of big, physical teams like LA, ANA and BOS. They were always physically dominant.

  16. Galchenyuk switched from wing to centre, he played wing earlier in the season and in his NHL career. I won't be surprised if he stays at centre but he might have to compete with other prospects for a centre spot when they all start getting some time in the NHL hopefully or in the AHL. If he can't beat them out well he can play on the wing and he's doing well so far on wing.

  17. Gaunce has the best chance of making the NHL of any other prospect not in the NHL because of his mature game. Plays a very pro style of game, isn't flashy but he works hard, a smart player and is in position. Reads the play well, I think he'll be a solid bottom 6 player that you can rely out there on the PK, he's a big body aswell which always helps in puck battles and overall.

  18. The only concern I have with Bo is that sometimes he's watching too much in the defensive zone and he's not "reading the play" but he's just standing in the slot not moving his feet and I guess all he's really doing is blocking a passing lane. I don't know why he does that, sometimes he's tired but sometimes I don't know what it is.

He's similar to Toews in how he protects the puck, makes plays offensively and his vision. I think his skating can get to how Toews skates, not explosive skaters but can skate well.

The 4th line needs more ice-time than guys like Burrows and Higgins. Dorsett, Hansen and Horvat are all going 100% and battling hard same with Matthias and Vey. These guys are putting in alot of effort in every shift and they are lately our best forwards getting the most chances.

  19. Not anymore do we need him.

I love the remaining parts of the 2011 core, they did alot to try and bring a Cup home but Burrows just looks so slow and weak out there. It's pretty sickening to see how he dropped off, he's one of our worst skaters, he's not dynamic enough to play on the 2nd line. He's really not doing much ever since he got demoted to the 2nd line when Vrbata came here. Bonino is the best player on that line by a pretty big margin.

He's a big caphit for the next little while and he's not playing like a 2nd line guy. Everyone on our team brings more to the table than him IMO, Vey, Bonino, Kassian bring more skill, Matthias, Higgins, Hansen, Dorsett bring more energy and grit than him, Horvat is a centre, brings better playmaking and two-way game than him.
