  1. Myers is the top free agent left who plays defense. He is going to get PAID. He is a solid player but this will 100% be a bad deal. I do really like Starlman and I am curious to see what the numbers will end up for him. Hainsey I have zero interest in. Edler Starlman could be very solid. The idea here is that you wait until free agency starts. You throw out your offers and see what comes back. If you get nothing then you don't trade the 1st for a LW. If you do then have at it. There is unnecessary uncertainty by doing it this way. You also are more likely to over pay now. I think it is safe to assume short of trading one of the core that the 1st round pick was the most valuable piece the Canucks had in a trade. I think it is also safe to assume that a trade for a top 4 RHD will be very difficult now without it. If Hutton+Sutter gets you something good then great; but I doubt it highly. I get that maybe something better will come along later. BUT you don't have the 1st round pick to trade for it anymore. That is exactly what I am saying. You don't have to finish anything now. You can wait it out until the opportunity arises. You cannot seize that opportunity if you don't have the trade chips necessary to make the deal.
  2. Why is it that I have to repeat this adnoseaum. This is the most valuable tradeable asset the Canucks had. You are not trading the core. This is the piece that couldve landed a top 4 RHD. This was needed over a LW.
  3. I am not panicking at all. What I am advocating is that there should have been PATIENCE to move the 1st round pick. Wait it out. Miller is going nowhere. If that is the best deal possible then circle back to it. Why not try and get a young quality RHD first? I am not proposing Karlsson. I simply said if you had an elite player at the top of the depth chart then Tanev and Stecher look fine. I mean Karlsson/Hedman play 25+ minutes a night. You wouldn't really care that much that Stecher and Tanev are playing 17. If you get a guy who comes in and plays 22 then you need 20 and 18 that't more than what I would like to see those two playing.
  4. I have been waiting for this top pair RHD for long time. At this point I am out of breathe. You seem to paint a picture that it won't be too difficult to obtain one with the remaining mix of tradeable assets. If you are right then great. I would've have simply prioritized the RHD over the LW power forward. Lievo is a poor man's LW Power Forward and so is Virtanen.
  5. Alright thats not me. Didn't mean to be harsh. I am of the opinion that the draft is largely a crap shoot. Teams get credit for being good or bad a drafting primarily because optically thinking is reset by a few hits. The hits are primarily due to being able to draft really high. Benning will inevitably revert to the mean as well. Since the Stamkos draft the only meaningful player that TB has drafted past the 3rd round is Palat. This is what I mean by changing a perspective of how well at team does because they draft high often (thats over 30 picks). Valiesvski, Kucherov and Point drafted 25-90 are an impressive trio to get with lower probability picks; but thats 3 hits on 20+ attempts. You have to admit there is a fair amount of good fortune in that.
  6. Tanev isn't what she used to be and Stecher is a darling of the fan base but a very limited hockey player. In fact they are both darlings of the fanbase, but they are not top 4 RHD. I see your point if the guy at the top of the depth chart is Hedman/Karlsson, but not if its Myers... There is no offense and they are small and soft as a group. I really like Miller. Great contract, Great numbers, Only 26, versatile, physical, etc...I just don't see Tampa in a massive hurry to get rid of him. You get the RHD first and circle back to Miller later. You have to prioritize. I think you would agree that RHD is the biggest gap on the roster.
  7. yes because the 1st has the least value possible right now. It's value increases as you get closer to the 2020 draft. There are 60 RHD playing top 4 hockey in the NHL. I can't imagine that between now and June 2020, the Canucks couldn't have used that pick to pickup a quality RHD. I really like Risto, but I can understand if the ask was too high. But you don't have a gun up to your head, you can wait it out. Giving it away for an all be it high quality LW is not what this team needed.
  8. come on man. Now you are really grasping for straws here. You sell to the highest bidder for something you are trying to get rid of.
  9. I get jokes. I actually don't care about the pick itself. I care about what the pick could have become in a trade. I would hold that damn thing out until I got my RHD.
  10. Barrie is still out there and so is Ristolanien. Maybe even Pesce or another RHD could have been obtained for that pick. Nashville was clearly trying to trade Subban. If the Canucks offered a 1st round pick over two 2nds, the Predators would have 100% taken that deal. Why wouldn't they trade him to Vancouver? Of course he was available to Vancouver. There is nothing about what NJ offered that made it impossible for Vancouver to match or exceed.
  11. You frame everything in an anit-Benning lens. My point is that the Canucks draft record since he has been the GM is easily better than TB or any other team for that matter He is hitting on his picks. Canucks draft pre-Benning was an absolute disaster and meaningless to compare. The draft is primarily a luck based endeavor. A couple of pages back someone posted the parabolic draft performance of 1st overall to 7th round. There is no skill in drafting 1st overall. The Canucks drafted 2nd and 3rd overall once and hit on two Hall of Famers. The lack of top 3 picks is the reason this team is as bad as it is. The reason why Tampa is as good as they are is because of Stamkos and Hedman. Point and Kucherov are amazing players in their own right, but Petterson and Horvat are not terrible either. If the Canucks had Hedman and Stamkos on this roster they would easily be a top 5 team in the league. The best players are whats most important as a poster responding to me so eloquently put it. You don't get much better than those two.
  12. waiver wire Schenn, broken Tanev and Stecher bless his heart for all his effort is a small defensive defenseman. There is ZERO offense coming from those 3. That is an AHL quality right side.
  13. I think people on here fail to see how little value Hutton, Tanev, Stecher, Sutter, Baertschi, etc have in a trade. You can't get a top 4 RHD for these kinds of players even if you spit ball them all together in one massive 7 for 1 trade.
  14. who do you have left to trade for that D? throwing a 5th round pick at a KHL All Star isn't going to cut it. The free agents are going to cost too much. You cant just wish it to come true.
  15. Sakic is a tough negotiator but Subban and Risotolanien could've been had for that 1st for SURE. Considering Subban went for two 2nd's and a Lind and Gadjovich.
  16. totally get it. Completely and utterly get it. The right hand side of the defensive ledger looks throw up bad. There are and were available players who could have improved the team instead the GM chose a LW. Regardless of how good he is this team need a RHD>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>LW.
  17. The goalie is irrelevant, the pick maybe a valuable player 4-5 years from now and the 3rd is 20% chance to play NHL hockey. Again no problem with any of that. Subban was available and easily obtainable. Barrie may have cost a 1st, Gaudette and Lind + whatever. Risotlanien I believe would be possible with a 1st +. Why was this not the priority? Now that the 1st is gone that is no longer really possible unless you deal someone off the core or Joulevi or Virtanen +++. Why sell low on those two? I don't like this from a team building perspective at all.
  18. I could careless about the draft pick. I have had a million discussions on here on how overrated they are. This team just doesn't have a lot of trade chips. This was the biggest one. You don't send off the biggest trade chip for a LW not matter how solid of a player he is. I really like the player, cap hit, age and team fit. I think the deal is fair value and even somewhat of a steal. BUUUUUUT this team needs defense and Myers at 7x7 is not what I am looking for.
  19. The need for D is substantially greater than at forward. Free agents will cost way too much and there is no guarantee they sign here. Its not like Miller was going to get traded 100% this weekend. The Canucks could have waited until July 1st to see who they can sign then make a trade for a RHD. Now they have to throw 7x7 at Myers which is going to be an awful deal in 3 years if not right away.
  20. I am trying to have a realistic conversation. I am not oblivious to the fact that Boeser, Petterson, Hughes and Horvat play for the team.. The Canucks traded away a 1st round pick which could have been used to get a top 4 RHD and instead chose to trade for a LW. Trading any of the core group opens up a whole new problem area for the team.
  21. https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/TBL/draft.html# You can do your homework. He is a link to their drafting. Very underwhelming. The only substantial player they have drafted in the last 40 picks is Brayden Point. If the Canucks drafted 1st and 2nd overall in the last 10 years this roster would look dramatically different. Petterson, Boeser, Horvat, Hughes were all obtained in the last 40 picks. Not counting Demko, Joulevi and Gaudette. I think the Canucks win hands down. https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/TBL/draft.html#
  22. so you are suggesting that the team trade Petterson? or Horvat or Quin Hughes or Brock Boeser? Are you for real?
  23. You mean Stamkos and Hedman right? Let me know when the Canucks win the lotto and draft 1st or 2nd overall. I am fairly certain this team with with Matthews and Eichel would be a pretty sweet squad. People give too much credit to things that happen primarily by chance. No one would pass on Hedman or Stamkos at their draft positions. To get their draft positions took no skill. Much easier to build a team when you get gifted a number one center (richard winning) and a Norris winning number 1 defender. They definitely didnt take any shortcuts into getting incredibly lucky.
  24. The player (Miller) is a great acquisition at a good cap hit. He is young too. The biggest problem I have with this trade is exactly what you say. I can't believe they would trade the best trade chip this team has for a forward. This team has so many forwards. I don't think that Miller makes this team better versus Barrie or Subban. Based off of what Subban cost NJ, the Canucks could have easily traded for him. He had his best years in NY, so I am not worried about him being effective in Vancouver. He is a very good fit with Petterson. Now if there is a master plan to sign Myers or trade for Ristolanien (with whom knows what at this point going the other way. Then no problem. But to trade a 1st round pick which has good value to another team for winger which this team has a million of is more than a little puzzling. To me this is my main criticism of Benning. He will acquire BPA no matter what. He doesn't really give enough thought to team building. This team has a massive need for two RHD in the top 4. So he spends the best trade chip on a LW??? He has been throwing 5th round picks at the problem (Clendenning, Larsen, Weber) rather than actually trying to get a substantial player to fill the void. I like Beagle but when you have Sutter and Horvat on the team do you really need to spend that amount of money on a another defensive center? Beagel-Sutter-Horvat sounds like playoff ready center depth. When you look at the defense it makes you want to throw up. I can't imagine that Buffalo would have turned down a 1st in 2020 and 3rd for Ristolanien. Maybe you through in Hutton, but that deal is for sure getting done. How do you not take that over Miller? Unless you are trading Boeser, you don't have enough value with Tanev, Sutter, Granlund, Hutton, Goldobin, Lievo, Baertschi, Stecher, 2nd round pick, Demko, Gaudette to turn it into a top 4 RHD. Now you have to trade Virtanen or Joulevi, selling them low and removing two players who could have a large impact on the future of the team. I have really liked Jim's tenure as he has amassed more quality talent with less than I could have imagined, but this deal is incredibly strange to me.
