  1. This actually sounds like an easy trade for both sides. Schenn is easily the better player now and Liljegren isn't going to be a top 3 defender in the NHL. Maybe he can top out as a 4/5 guy. Tha'ts still good as he is younger and has a different skillset. I have no desire to trade Schenn for a 3rd or 2nd round pick. A decent young player like this would be much better for me. Its a gamble and their is too long of a runway before you can know how good that player is. Especially, if we are talking about a defender...
  2. Boeser Poolman for Dobson Palmeri (1mil retained) The Islanders needs scoring badly. Palmeri has one goal in 29 games and has 4 years at 5m left. Boeser would be a huge upgrade on that. Dobson is somewhat expendable because of Pulock. Who is just now healthy... Dobson would be a massive add long term as a Hughes partner for a legit top pair. If Palmeri doesn't pick it up here send him to Arizona. He has negative value, but a team like Arizona would love to take a shot on him in the hopes that he improves. It might only take a 2nd round pick to pawn him of on the Coyotes. Poolman is locked in for 4 years as a RHD. Its more about freeing up a roster spot for the Canucks and replacing the spot for the Islanders in their lineup. Call me crazy but this seems really fair. If not Dobson then Pulock would be suitable alternative even though he is 5 years older.
  3. If that's the way they want to go then that's fine. Petey it is... The problem is that you are very unlikely to make a hockey trade for Miller, so that means you are going to get lesser players in the hopes that they become better players. If he is traded, he is going to a contender and they are not doing a 1 for 1 trade. You are also more likely to receive best prospect available or a draft pick that you will draft best player available rather than looking to fill team needs. Petey on the other hand can easily be traded in a hockey trade. There is definitely a team that would give a young RHD for him. The team would overall be better after that trade then the Miller trade as a complementary piece would be added and redundant one removed. As you yourself say Miller and Petey are direct competitors for the 1C position. You clearly like Petey better, and there is a lot to like in him. But he is the better trading chip to improve the team, provided that he doesn't become Peter Forsberg. You are always taking a gamble either way, so there is no absolute right answer.
  4. Miller takes on the responsibility of making the play. If the team was better then I would assume he wouldn't be doing this as much. Making the safe play down 3-0 maybe makes your stats better, but it also does nothing for the team. You want someone to take risks and take ownership. Inevitably that won't work out sometimes. Miller is not a perfect player by any means. But this is the type of player who will show up in the playoffs, he wants to be the man. He wants to win more than the rest of the group and it shows. During his slump you could see EP's body language was terrible. Like a sad puppy that just wanted to stop playing and go home. Its natural for people to show emotion or behave badly even. They are human beings. You are right that certain assists are circumstantial and based off specific plays that they run, but Miller just does more in every aspect of the game. He is a more well rounded player right now. Its not just about the goals and assist or even analytics. He can change a game with a big hit, he can change the game by blocking a shot on PK, He can change the game by skating through the entire opposing team. He brings emotion into the game. The guy has fought Shea Weber! Enough said...
  5. Its not about just playoffs. There can only be on winner. Obsessing about that is also fruitless. There are 32 other teams doing everything possible to win the cup. There is a fair amount of luck that is involved in making it happen to. You can't control everything. Enjoy the ride and ice the best team possible within reason. You are right someone blows your socks of then trade anyone. But Toronto's two best prospects and Kerfoot sounds awful, that makes the team substantially worse. I don't know if its video games or the media or whatever it is but there is too much focus on "asset management". We are playing hockey right? Its not the stock market. Its not about buying low and selling high on every player. Its about putting together a team. A cohesive team where players complement each other. That is very difficult to do when you are constantly worried about is it time to sell. When you are getting younger perpetually and drafting best player overall rather than having some kind of conceptualization of what you actually want the team to be, you get a mess. Young players take a long time to figure out what type of player they are going to be. If you have a team full of prospects and best players overall in trades and drafts then you just get a random pile of stuff. This is no way to build a team. The Canucks are a great example of this. The defense Hughes-OEL-Rathbone, three similar players all on the left side. OEL's offense has suffered because Hughes takes his offensive minutes which is fine as he is arguably better but then you are wasting a skill set. Rathbone is NHL ready but sitting in the minors because we cant giving the protected offensive zone minutes as they are currently all going to Hughes. This is similar to Karlsson and Burns in SJ. One of the dumbest things I have ever seen a GM do in my 30 years of watching hockey. There a lot of good forwards on the team, but they don't play well together. They aren't good fits. The attack always looks disjointed and way too much one on one play. The team is desperate for some true playmaking and passing forwards. Horvat-Miller-Boeser-Petterson all would rather go at a player than pass the puck. This is why every Canucks coach has had so much unnatural love for Pearson, who is a very limited player, because he actually retrieves pucks and plays well on the boards. The rest of the top 6 can't be bothered to pay that way. This team desperately needs a Henrik Sedin. That maybe the type of player we get in a trade in the draft but maybe it wont as we are always chasing best player available, so its a roulette wheel that maybe turns up another offensive LHD or single minded winger.
  6. You are confusing the possibility of drafting a good player in a later round with the probability. Those are two very different things. It is possible I will win the lottery. It is beyond unlikely that I will.
  7. Picks are practically useless unless they are in top 10. Even then Joulevi and Virtanen say "Hi". You can never have enough good centers as they can play wing if needed. Petterson can't win a faceoff to save his life, he is 150 pounds at best, and having an awful year offensively. Lets not count our chickens...I assume that's who you have penciled in a 1C. Not saying he doesn't become one, but it certainly isn't a given. If you can get Lafreniere and Schneider from NY for Miller and Motte/Schenn or 2nd round pick or whatever it would take then I say fine as both are NHL ready. But even then its a gamble... Miller is a 1C, leader, excellent at faceoffs, and a physical player who kills penalties. We are not a 1st round pick or two from picking up a player like that again. He is a very rare player and the type you build your team around.
  8. The biggest problem with moving Miller is that 1C are very rare, and you can't win without them. There are probably less than 15 real ones in the NHL. Miller is one. There is no guarantee that a prospect will develop into that role. Yes you can get good picks and prospects, but as far as building a successful team this would be a massive setback.
  9. The simple reason for this is that people MASSIVELY overestimate the value of picks and prospects. Magic beans!!! Getting to the NHL is extremely hard, playing 200 games in the NHL is really hard, being an All-Star in the NHL is nearly impossible, being Connor McDavid is a once in a lifetime deal. If someone just looked at these things mathematically, they would be very discouraged on stockpiling picks. People often confuse that because there are a few hits in picks after the top 10, that the likelihoods of that happening are reasonable. They are not reasonable. 500 4-7th round picks are not worth a top 10 scorer in the NHL. Prospects are better than picks as you have more time to see performance. What you really want is young players already in the NHL. I am ok with trading Miller, but I want young NHL ready players. Trading him for beans is dumb. Not only are the probabilities low. You also have to wait 2-3 year before you even know where you stand.
  10. if that's the case, this team needs another center badly. He is a very competitive guy. Reminds me of Kesler with the biggest difference being that Kesler could absolutely fly. He doesn't have to be 1st or 2nd line center for a trade to make sense. It would be great if he turned into a Lars Ellerish type of player.
  11. at 7m ish Brock is too inconsistent and in a cap world that money would be much better allocated elsewhere. His value is neutral at that cap hit. Not many teams could or would take him in a trade at that price. That's part of the thought process. I am more interested in what a realistic asking price is for Poehling than trading Brock specifically.
  12. What would it take to land him? I watched him live in the gold medal game WJC USA vs. Finland. He is an absolute Manimal. Boeser for Poehling Carolina's 1st Thoughts?
  13. in the United States the health insurance industry is privately owned. There absolutely is a massive impact on health insurance premiums for all healthy Americans because of this. Premiums rise by 10% per year on average in the states. The same strain on the medical system is also felt. More time an energy is spent on helping obese people as they are more prone to everything. Its just that strain is stretched out which makes it more palatable. People tend to think of ideal world scenarios too often. Even if we are talking about offering free chocolate to everyone. Some people will simply say no. Just to say no. There is no way of getting 100% of the people to do anything. If you don't get 100% vaccination and 100% mask wearing then you get a virus that stay in circulation. That's where we are now. That is were we are going to be in the REAL world. Getting mad about people not doing it is silly too as you know its human nature for some people to cut against the grain. Its like being surprised that the sun rises the next day. Its going to happen regardless of the scientific evidence or explanation or even if Trump came out and said everyone should do it. This is pandemic will result in an endemic regardless of what steps are taken as you cannot get 100% of the people to do anything. 91% less deadly is a huge number. 155,000 is a very small number. There are over 300M Americans and 2,400,000 die every year. We cannot prevent all death and there absolutely is an opportunity cost to reducing even 1 death both from a mental health standpoint and financially. Yes Covid pushes up death for the most vulnerable, but the simple sad fact is that these individuals do not have much time anyway. We cannot make them live indefinitely by simply following the rules. Again, I am not advocating not social distancing and not vaccinating; but we do have to recognize the limitations of our solutions as they will not be universally applied. Jailing people for not vaccinating is beyond absurd and will never happen. Ruining the life of a healthy 25 year old to save a 75 year old who has a year or two to go at best is not a good choice for society. I know this sounds really harsh, but we do have to deal with reality. Yes ideally it would have been awesome if we just shutdown the world for two weeks. Everyone did it and the virus disappeared. That didn't happen. We are where we are. We have to deal with the reality and limitation of human nature.
  14. I think a lot of people have a poor understanding of statistics. Just because some elite athletes have had difficulty with it, doesn't mean that it is likely or statistically significant enough to alter the behaviors of an entire society. Very healthy people die for all sorts of reasons all the time. When you have nearly 8 billion people on the planet, you get a wide variety of situations. I think it is human ego that leads us to believe we can control all outcomes. Sometimes you diet, exercise, sleep right, get vaxxed; and you still die. That doesn't mean you shouldn't do those things, but you also shouldn't look to explain anything by it either. If Connor McDavid died tomorrow, hypothetically he really likes eating tomatoes; we shouldn't extrapolate that eating tomatoes will kill you, although Tom Brady may have a different opinion (hahhaha, he is also anti-mushroom!!). Just because it can happen doesn't mean it is likely to happen. You cannot reduce risk to 0%. That is simply impossible. We should also not strive to reduce risk beyond reasonable level either. No need to eliminate driving altogether because bicycles are a safer form of transport. We do have to make decisions as a society that will put some people at risk. These types of decision are made continuously. This one is just very political because of Trump. He was and is a bad guy, but this was his one and only great skill. He got people charged up on both sides easily. Covid warps everyone's brains. If you don't know anyone who has had it or you survived it with minimal issue then the whole thing is fake. If you do know someone that has died from it then close the bunker door and we will see you in 2023. There is no room for anything in the middle. Why is there no room for an opinion that doesn't rest on one of these extremes? Yes hospitalization leads to stress on the medical system. Yes that leads to more death. Yes that is horrible. But it is undeniable that in a statistically meaningful way, one of the number one reasons you get hospitalized or die is because you are obese (CDC says 30%). Now these same people could've lived happy lives with out Covid, and they certainly don't deserve their situations or deaths. Obesity is the number one killer in developed world. It is very very preventable. It accelerates vulnerability for everything including Covid in a massive way. It seems we get most passionate about the immediate and ignore the long term more serious dangers as they are long term. We can just worry about that later right? Its always interesting to see what people get lit up about. Everyone in my family has the vaccine and we do our part to be good citizens. But I do find it very difficult to blame anyone for having a different opinion if it lies within the realm for reasonable thought and doubt. Covid is not fake, you should get the vaccine but it is a choice, and no society shouldn't be in a bunker until its over. I hope you take this the right way.
  15. The dead puck era is more 1997-2010. Mario hit 160 points in 95/96. The early 90's were still a lot of fun. Lindros was the man but his scoring peaked in 1995-1996. Foppa was the better player who achieved a 2nd peak in 2002-2003 smack in the middle of trap hockey. He was also a phenomenal defensive player. We all have our favorites and because of the injuries it is almost impossible to differentiate some players. I still say Bure was more exciting than McDavid is. They are both equally as fast versus their contemporaries. But Bure was absolutely reckless and relentless in getting to the goal and scoring. I have never felt the same way about watching hockey as I did with Bure. Genuine couch adrenaline!
  16. The toilet paper runs and food hoarding is not planning. Its hysteria.
  17. there is nothing thoughtful happening right now. Shutting down the economy to drag millions into poverty around the world will easily kill more people. Its not even close.
  18. You got me their margin of error is only 15M people. The know exactly what is going to happen 100%. When your margin of error is 15M, you don't have a clue.
  19. Enjoy the panic and hysteria. Panic is never a good solution to anything, ever...
  20. You guys are absolutely loosing your minds if you think small or mid sized city in BC is going to have 50% of the population sick from the coronavirus. Italy and NY are dramatically different environments. Most people take public transportation, most people live in multi-family housing, most people have larger social networks, even absurdly simply things like smaller refrigerators have an impact on how frequently people leave the house to get groceries. In Italy it is very common to have Grandparents live with their children. You can definitely see how a younger person who is asymptomatic would have a high probability of killing an older individual in that case.. There is no possibility for this extensive of a spread in any of these smaller communities. There is no real surprise that Europe and NY are in trouble based of demographics and the inter-connectedness of their communities. Whats more compelling is why does a country like Japan and South Korea, who have similar characteristics to Europe and NY, have significantly fewer cases and deaths. I cant believe the fear and panic. Even in Italy almost all deaths are due to 60+ individuals with pre-existing conditions. We are still only talking about 12K dead on a population of 7,530,000,000 globally. Can we get some kind of perspective? 50% of the world will not get sick and hundreds of millions are not going to die. Quarantine the 60+ population with pre-existing conditions. Give them free food, money, the ability to test themselves and easy access to healthcare. Let the rest go about their lives. If the economy crashes, there will be a lot more people that will kill themselves due to suicide, hunger or other diseases that kill poor people.
  21. Also JV looked lost because he is still learning how to hockey. Boeser is like a Rembrandt of Hockey. The guy has just lost his muse. He is entirely uninspired. Its not about inconsistency its about will and desire.
  22. what do you mean give up? The whole idea would be to get full value for a 22 year old with great numbers. Its not like the proposal is trade Boeser for future considerations. That is giving up...
  23. now this one I like too. I like it especially because I think Brock would light it up in Minnesota. He would be the man on that team and for that entire state. He would realize his true potential. Dumba is fantastic player, so it is win-win. I wouldn't want Brock to get the short end of the stick. He is a great human.
