If he runs someone and they get hurt tho, that is the problem. Saying not too worried is probably how Canuck players feel too and oh we will get em back on the PP ala the Sedin Era Montra. Well, guess what Sedin's are gone time for the new captain to step up and if our guys get targeted he lead the way in showing we aren't pushovers like we have been over the past decade.

Stand up for each other and go after someone if they run or take a dirty shot on your teammate. If beer league hockey can do it, why can't Millionaires!?!?

Fair enough. Definitely a trend with our team. Hopefully Ferland, Virtanen, and the 4th line can provide some grit of their own today. Honestly, more concerned about Haley than Lemieux, but both have reputations to consider.

I like Lemieux, plays on the edge and is physical, be a great 4th liner player for us to have!

Here is hoping he doesn't run one of our guys...if he does I sure hope we react like the Lames/Kings of last night or Devils yesterday even when the hit wasn't even that bad! Those teams push back...Canucks haven't in quite some time, which is sad in my books.

Last time he ran one of our guys, he got 5 and a game misconduct. Not too worried. Unless it was Krieder... hard to keep track, honestly...

Did you see Green's post game interview? Regarding the power play he basically said; "it was good, we had some good looks, the only thing lacking was a goal".

    Are you *&$%&#@ kidding me?!

In fairness, the first three power plays had a lot of solid looks. Blackwood was a brick wall though and I think the Devils had some odd 16 blocked shots by the halfway mark. If Horvat scored on that set play, or if Petey's one timers weren't going wide, there'd be a different tune. The biggest problem facing the power play is zone entries and getting set, evidenced by the last power play that got absolutely nothing done.

Can someone remind me, do we currently have the cap space to have him return to the roster in November? Or will we need to make any slight adjustments?

He's not on LTIR so cap will be unaffected once he's dressed. Only implications are roster spots.

Overall, I'm not too worried. 1 game played, not trying to read into it too much, but...I hope the PP lines were a test and Leivo doesn't end up on the 1st unit again. IMO, that's where we really miss having Baer. Out of his 14pts in 26gp last year, 3g, 7pts were on the PP. Couple bad giveaways, but I'll chalk this up to developing line chemistry.

We had a few extended periods of high pressure possession 5-v-5 which looked very dangerous and should only get better as the season progresses, Loui actually had some jump in his step, which was refreshing, Pearson had a good game, physical around the net, Hughes overall had a decent night, just tries to do too much sometimes both offensively (skating the puck into high coverage areas) and defensively (trying to stop a bull rather than containing it). Myers was impressive, Edler was good, seems to have worked on his shot over the summer, same with Petey (that PP one timer :o)... lots of positives to take away from this game. look forward to the next one.

I tend to agree RE power play. I understand what they were trying to accomplish with two solid PP units. PP2 was actually quite effective, though I would prefer to see Horvat bumped back up to PP1 to play bumper or front of net. Leivo is a bit redundant on that unit, but in fairness he's one of our better right handed shots next to Boeser, plus he's bit of a beast with puck possession and retrival. Here's hoping we see the following set-ups this season:

    PP1

    Boeser-Horvat-Pettersson

    Hughes-Myers

    PP2

    Pearson-Miller-Ferland
    Edler-Leivo

On the first unit, Hughes would quarterback, Myers with the Cannon from the point, two One-Timer options in Petey and Boeser (plus EP can quarterback from the half-wall) and Horvat can provide net-front presence and puck control from behind the net.

Second unit is not nearly as skilled, but that's alot of big bodies and net crashers. The amount of pandemonium they would cause in front of the net would be understated, provided they can get solid chipped entries (Would only be effective with goalies who don't play the puck proficiently... Likely would've been extinguished last night with how Smith was playing). Alternatively, depending on how the night was going, maybe throw Virtanen or Gaudette in there as they have underrated shots from the left half-wall, provided they deserve it (unimpressed with Virtanen lately...).

  6. After a night to digest last night's game, I've made the following observations:

    - I really like the Horvat/Pearson/Miller line. They're going to be fun to watch.

    - Ferland does a little too much skills-wise. Only their 2nd game together as a line so reserving further judgment until about game 10.

    - Nice to see so much offense from our D. Tremendous improvement from the back end.

    - Sutter had the weak turnover leading to the game winning goal. Here's hoping he shows accountability for the lazy play by bringing it in Calgary.

    - Hughes nearly had McDavid, but alas he got burned by one of the greatest players in the game today. Not going to lose sleep over it as his play in the offensive zone is a great reminder of how exciting of a player he will be for us moving forward.

    - Very effective PK, though I'm not a huge fan of our even strength Defensive systems. Seems a little too passive for my liking.

    - Definitely a game we could've and should've won, but the Oilers were able to capitalize on our mistakes. We couldn't.

    - Missed call on Smith, but I'm not putting the game on the refs. We had three Too Many Men calls go our way, and we didn't score on any of them.

    - Virtanen had a couple of good self chips, but overall was ineffective in a fourth line role. On one hand, it's difficult to be a game changer with under 10 minutes of ice time. On the other hand, he was essentially gifted a spot this year and it would be nice to see him earn it. Would hate to see him scratched over Eriksson, which very well may be the case for Saturday...

    - Gaudette definitely needs to slot in next game for some fire.

A good game with a disheartening result. Onwards and upwards!

  7. Though I understand the concern in waiving Baertschi, I see it as a win/win.

If he's claimed, we free up $3M+ in cap space. It'll be sad to see him go, and sure, you can argue "asset management," but having the cap space gives the team flexibility moving forward.

If he goes unclaimed, we would have amazing forward call-up depth once the inevitable injuries begin to accumulate. Ferland gets a concussion, Pearson breaks a rip, Sutter gets a hernia (again) and BAM he's back in the top 6 like nothing ever happened.

Also, for those mad that Loui and Schaller are still around... Just wait until Roussel is activiated. Just sayin...

IMO picks after 15, Its pretty much a crapshoot where teams draft closer to needs rather than talent since the talent pool around that time is quite close. Either way, Hogs drop isn't as drastic as some of the other guys like that Russian guy Kuliev (I dont want to bother to research his name, the guy that the Kings took in the 2nd round) and Lavoie. That would've been something had Lavioie and Hogs were available during our pick, I wonder who would've the Canucks have taken

Oh totally. Maybe a drop of 15 picks tops. Hogs isn't the only one that dropped as evidenced by the 2nd round selections of Kaliev, Lavoie, and Vlasic, all slated for the tail end of the first. Definitely a testament to how close picks 15-50 were in potential and skill level. Definitely happy with the Hoglander pick as LW is a position the Canucks lack in their system. Had Kaliev been still available, I can imagine the Canucks snatching him purely on a BPA, making one or two of Virtanen, Lind, McEwan, and Jasek expendable down the line, especially with the inclusion of Podkolzin. Part of the reason why I love the draft.

Just out of curiosity, why did he drop out of 1st round if he is skilled like Gaudreau and stronger?

I would imagine size had a lot to do it with. Gaudreau was drafted in the 4th round after all.

I would also say he didn't get as much exposure as others, like Cole Caufield, who many projected to go within the top 10. Even he was drafted 15th.
