I personally believe in the whole ''tryout'' concept with sports teams.  A guy can earn a spot, and still be sent down to the AHL if its not going well.

    Its up to the player!

There is a lot of myth in there James.

And lets be a little honest? Jake did not bulk up. He got fat? Took a bit for granted which worked against him. Maybe it was muscle, but it was the wrong kind of muscle.

It is also not like your incorrect either?

    Here is what I do know;

Weight for weights sake is not necessarily good.  Take David Booth who used to bulk up for three weeks, it seemed, every year before training camp. He would be over massed, and his muscles still in recovery from heavy sessions in the weight room. And he would pull abdominal and groin muscles. Pure bulk from heavy isolation exercises to particular muscles does not mean you have the strength and flexibility, or endurance you need for hockey muscles.  The first rule of thumb is your training can, should and must be very targeted to the sport you are in.       (another mistake of Jake.)

However a stronger upper body, if its lean muscle mass, is highly unlikely corrupt your center of gravity. Elias will need ''some meat on his bones.!'' Muscles absorb better than bone, and muscle bruises heal faster than bone bruises. Target training. And balanced training, is much more commonly advocated these days. With exertion and energy levels routinely designed to simulate the exertion of your sport and its intensity. Where as grunting out 3 reps on the squat wrack or bench press wont. Boxing and martial arts training, skip rope, heavy rope, medicine ball, the Grouse Grind with hand weights, cycling, swimming and hell, skating, taking shots while under aerobic duress, etc., can all be designed to rip your upper body without distorting anything. The general rule is add as much range of motion and aerobic capacity as you can while working out. Add explosive movements (speed bag, the rope, punching drills) not just controlled movements. And you will be much more closely resembling your sports activities than simple lug head weight lifting.

Okay a picture I tried to insert of a guy doing a rope burn exercise keeps disappearing.

We should not assume because a guy puts on weight that its bad either.  Look at this guy above? What, again, is important is to consider is putting in the cardio, core and leg training the ice hockey player needs.  Petterson is an ectomorph. Like Wayne Simmonds. And Danny & Hank.  They naturally have longer limbs, higher levels of energy, but also sinewy muscles with very high levels of strength & flexibility in comparison to body mass. And core muscle from the right workouts. That's why The Twins can hold onto the puck with big bastard D men leaning on them in the cycle game. Putting on, or not putting on weight, will be more be reflection of diet, and whether you overtrain. When I ran marathons I got down to 158 lbs one year. But could still bench 285 lbs. My weight went down because I burned more calories. But my diet was not great either. And I went at it 7 days a week, not 3 or 4 with rest. The right balance and you can put on good weight.

If you do play with a higher body weight?  Fuel and rest become even more critical. Muscles will not stop you from being dextrous, explosive, controlled in your movement. The opposite actually. But also requires more energy. Simple physics. Energy expelled is equal to mass x acceleration. But you might run out of puff unless you are fuelled, and your body practiced & ready to do the 30, 40, 50 second shifts at the explosive intensity level required. Training must simulate beng able to stop, power full blast, exert puck control, hold off Dustin Byfuglien leaning on you? And with higher weight you have to make sure you burn off excess energy after every game, every muscle work out. Ride the bike or run after training. But then eat and have a rest the next day.

Guys like Kassian, Jake last year, were not trained well enough & diet savy to last full shifts. Until they figured out how to do it?

Petterson came in second and 7th in the Windgate 30 second and 7 second peak power drills among the 107 odd guys tested at the combines. He's actually a way better, stronger and more explosive athlete than most know. Its what gives him the agility, and control he has at speed. It will also mean, he can put on weight if he has the right diet and training.

Too much fuss over this topic!

Aaaannnddd...BOOM...mike drop!  Great read, learned a lot. Thanks!

It seems to me that a lot of Russian players have this same mindset.

I hate to say it's true because there are so many good Russians playing in the NHL and it's not fair to them...but it does have validation. Lots of players from different nationalities do the same thing if they don't get what they're seeking for in the NHL, but it's not maybe as frequent as how many times it happens with Russian players. Perhaps it's because Russians know they have the KHL which by all accounts is the next best league in the world with the next best pay for a professional.

I get what you're saying, but I don't think that's his view. He uses  specific examples, Goldy scoring in his first game and getting bench, that isn't NHL hockey, that's just outright stupid, there is no logic. Goldy's effective when he scores, and if he's getting benched right when he does that, what's the point?

That's a good point to bring up, but I remember his goals he scored last year. They were nice but came at the expense of playing a team game and a team system. That's why I have trouble with what Nikita said. Of course not all his goals last year were because of his lack of team play, but there were quite a few instances during his short stint last season where he provided spark a certain points during the game then floated around blowing assignments for the rest looking to cheat on a play and get a quick goal. I thinks that's more why Willie would bench him...maybe he gets too excited when he scores a goal lol?? Of course this is just my point of view, and I do see your logic as well.

    Cheers

  4. What i'm most worried about is how he thinks Goldobin should be playing in the NHL because he can score goals...if that's his view of hockey he's sorely mistaken about what NHL hockey is all about. Sure it's nice to score goals but there is so much more to the game than just that. For him to suggest he doesn't know why Goldy gets benched all the time shows me he doesn't fully understand the North American version of the game. Goldy is a great prospect with great offensive talent but if you just float around waiting to score all the time it just makes your teammates work harder on the ice to cover for you, which is selfish. You need to contribute on both ends of the ice to earn respect in this league. Funny thinking about it...but Goldy is very much like Subban, great at offence...defense...what defense?

It's much easier to complain and be negative. You don't have to be intelligent (or even correct!) to do so.

Conversely, when people see a positive, well constructed point, it turns into a sense of agreement but maybe not as much discussion.

You're right, good point. When you see something well constructed with good thought put into it all you can really do is give props or a plus to the guy lol. But those are the kind of posts I like. Something with substance that I can read and maybe learn a bit from.

Lol. I have definitely noticed, even in the GDT's, that when something bad happens for us (Canucks get trounced by LV, vs when we beat the Kings; or Virtanen plays well but OJ struggles) that those particular "negative threads" always seem to be more popular than the positive ones. Makes me wonder if there's that many trolls here, or perhaps people are just habitually cynical.

It's hilarious actually, pretty much like clock work. The negative posts just start flying off the shelf after a loss. Benning is an idiot, Fire Benning, Fire Linden, Fire Lindenning, on and on and on...really annoying! There are some great posters on here, I mostly just read and don't respond much but I get a lot of great info from some good people on here. I'll keep focusing on them and their informative posts and not even bother with the rest of the trash because it's so repetitive!

    Byfuglien, by Roberto Luongo

Lol, forgot about this...dang I love Lu! It's funny looking back on how spoiled we were with him. Yet most people on here still found ways to grind bones with him. CDC...never satisfied.

.. and recently seen where WD refused to use him..

ps. Love the fact his instagram and FB account pictures have him in the Nuck's flavours.

Ugh...imagine that coming down on your head...!? My neck hurts thinking about it lol. Nice to see him getting some PP time, and in front of the net! Cherry on top. I remember when Byfuglen was in Chicago and they would park him in front of Lu on the PP. Was damn effective...

Really?  I grew up half and half in Vancouver and on a farm north of Dawson Creek (we would go back and forth each season - the short intense growing season makes that possible).  We farmed grain on 2 sections north of Rolla, the last two sections on the left (west side) before the road descends into the Peace River valley at Clayhurst (it was a ferry back in our day).  We had a great view out over the river valley.  Any of that ring a bell?

I agree that Palmu looks more like a gym guy than a farm guy but who knows?  I played rugby so I did my gym time as well, but pitching bales and general farm labour is excellent for fitness.  I'm in my 50's now but I still prefer gardening with hand tools instead of gas powered machines, it's actually a very good way to stay fit, and more enjoyable too, at least for me.

P.S. - Now that I've posted I may as well comment on Palmu's transgression.  I've been a supporter of him (check out my posts on "the mighty midget" on the prospect rankings series of threads) but I have to say that I lost a bit of respect for him with this.  I mean none of us are perfect and I've done stupid things myself aplenty but it was a big mistake (and apparently more than one).  It's not fatal, it can be recovered from but it does reveal poor judgement.

    GCG!

Haha yup, the ol' clayhurst ferry. I remember it well. That was the only way across the peace river back in the day. My uncles land is in clayhurst and he married a Rolla girl, her family has land spread all over that area. Lovely area, the canola crops in full bloom is one of my most favourite sights and smells.

I'm the same, I like manual labour so I don't use too many power tools around my property. I rake leaves, shovel snow, Buck wood, etc all by hand. Good work out indeed. It's just good to get outside really.

Ya I'm in the same boat, I don't like what he did but I'm willing to chalk it up to immaturity. Hopefully he learns from this and moves on in a positive matter.

  10. Not sure if it's been mentioned it but he's really reminding me of Brian Boyle, hard nosed 3rd line center that can hit, score a bit, and play good defense. Obviously by the sounds of things he may be quite a bit faster than Boyle on skates tho. But the size comparison is there for sure. If he turned out like that Attila be happy ;P

  11. And meanwhile in Nashville people are throwing catfish on the ice, Detroit used to throw an octopus onto the ice. The disrespect to animals around the world is an issue, Palmu isn't the only one. He even admitted he caught and released the fish. It still doesn't make it right especially since it's a protected species. I still like the kid, he's learning real hard probably for his first time tho, that now you are an NHL teams prospect, especially one with a rabid fan base. You better watch what you do, or we'll friggin hang ya kid...lol. I think he'll learn his lesson, issuing an apology via news report is embarrassing enough. Lets let the kid live n' learn.

Wife is a farm (ranch) girl from Southern .Alberta.  My family's farm was here, in the Fraser Valley.  We are retired now, but had a farm in the .Columbia Valley, up near Cultus lake.  Know the Dawson Creek, Fort St. John, Chetwynd, Hudson Hope are pretty well.  When the wife and I bought our farm, we looked in Metchosin too.  Beautiful area, no doubt.  Lived the city life, house in town, during the week, and went to the farm on weekends, holidays, and such.  Had caretakers to help out.  Ended up spending almost all our time on the farm anyway.  Now we're old, and live in a friggin' condo:(  only good thing about that is I can toss things off the balcony and hit people on the sidewalks below.  Kept a couple cattle prods too.  Keep one charged up, and it rides shotgun on my scooter.  If buggers on the sidewalk slow me down, I whack 'em good.

My father grew up in Sardis, so know that area well. Used to go to Cultus Lake as a kid and rent the cottages there back in the 80's. It's a bit crowded now tho! Beethoven's pizza is a fond memory as a kid growing up. As for the rest Alf, that is just golden! I'll be aware of anyone fuzzy riding around a scooter down in the mainland next time I visit...I don't want to get a whack lol! Cheers bud

I grew up on a farm, and Mrs. Alf and I had our own farm too.  We both loved the farming years too.  There was always lots to do; never bored.

I wonder if Palmu is a farm boy?  He's sure a stocky, and likely strong, looking guy.

I kinda think of him as a fitness freak, gym guy. He doesn't scream farm boy to me...but who knows lol!? Where was your farm Alfie?

All my family is from the Dawson Creek area, I basically grew up on my uncles farm. He has 1100 acres of freedom on the Peace River. But then I have other aunt's and uncles, and grandparents that owned land around the area as well...always chores to be done! My wife's family owns a 20 acre orchard in Metchosin outside of Victoria (beautiful in the summer, I pick fruit each year out there and sell it at the stand).

If this is what fishing can do for a hockey player's muscles, then I'm all for Palmu fishing.  (I think Howe was likely a farm boy). Did you see the Bobby Hull picture, where he's pitching hay on the farm?  Bo is a farm boy, and he's super strong.

Ya he's going after some large catch with that rod lol. Halibut can be a large task to bring up! Or sturgeon! For sure, good ol' farm boys have good work ethic and are usually pretty darn fit. I remember having to pitch fork all the loose hay in my grandpa's field back in the day into a hay truck (glad I don't have to do that task anymore tho, it would get so hot out in the field!!)... i've never been fitter in my life. All my family farms mine and my wifes side, love working on the farm. I don't need a gym lol.

I remember seeing that photo of Howe a few years back...what a legend no wonder he lasted so long in the league!

  16. So just decided to splurge to watch Rodins first game back from injury. Dang, first period and looking good. Making plays, good passing. Quick set up to Grenier in front of the net to tie the game! Also am really noticing Virtanen as well, in a good way :)
