  1. Nurse was afraid of a stand up fight, Mac had already tagged him once, a take down like that is a chicken crap move, he was so desperate to fight Mac that he made himself look like a moron, and should gotten a double minor for that little display in front of the benches, slashing, cross checking, roughing. Nurse is a POS, tends to pick on smaller guys, once he realized Mac was going to kill him, he went for the single leg, then jumped on top and tried to continue to punch while Mac was on his back. Typical Soiler..
  2. I've never been pro-tank, but I hope the Canucks go oh-fer the rest of the season. This might be the last chance to get a quality draft pick for a few years, as the window on this core is opening up, and I can see the possibility of trading picks for known commodity players in the next few years. This team is a lot better than it has shown this year. The moves made in the offseason would have gelled better with a full training camp, the early schedule was brutal, Petey gets hurt robbing the team of their one gamebreaker type player, along came COVID just as the team was playing better, and now a very injury depleted AHL caliber team is limping through the hockey equivalent of the Bataan Death March. If there was ever a year to tank, this would be it. Whoever wins the cup this year will have an asterisk next to it because of the COVID shortened season, so I don't think it was the cup we wanted for our first.
  3. Since he had a good record in both Florida and Vegas, did you ever ask yourself why Gallant got fired in both places? Especially in Vegas, there window is still open, why change horses in midstream? Once, yeah maybe he didn't gel with the GM or the owner, but TWICE? Seems like he might be hard to work with, perhaps a little toxic? We don't want that with our young core. With Babcock, it's a hard NO. Was he successful? Sure he won A CUP in Detroit, but look what he had to work with. He had a team full of veteran stars, leaders like Shanahan, Lidstrom and Yzerman. His first year, Detroit had six - 20 goal scorers, Zetterberg scored 39 and Shanahan potted 40. How could ANY decent coach not be successful with that group? The fact that he only won ONE cup is why I don't think he's that good. Bowman would have won two or three more with that team. In Toronto he couldn't get their young talent around the corner. That team is loaded with great players, better than our core, yet three strait first-round exits and one DNA, that's a problem. Word that I've heard is that he's very self-impressed. Honestly, the best coach for this team is the one behind the bench. I've read in more than one place with good sources that TG is a solid candidate for the Seattle job, and that maybe the reason they haven't named their headman yet is because they're waiting for the season to end. I'd keep Travis, and in a perfect world replace Baumer with somebody like Kevin Bieksa, and maybe see if we could encourage Burr to come back to Vancouver to coach our special teams.
  4. The difference is that the player Lind destroyed was not McJesus, was a comparable size and it was a clean hit. Larson is a lot bigger than Hughes, his elbows were up, he targeted his head, and only thanks to QH's athletic ability was he not spending time in concussion protocol. Big Mac is on this team for a reason, and it's not his offensive skill. The fact that nobody made Larson answer the bell is unacceptable.
  5. I thought Lind had by far his best game so far. He was noticeable for good reasons on nearly every shift. He handled the puck more confidently, made some nice passes that once he settles in and gets used to linemates will become good chances, he threw at least one heavy hit, picked a few pockets and was responsible defensively. I thought Rathbone looked good, confident with the puck, moves well, great skater and puck mover in the Hughes mold, but maybe better defensively. Both are definite keepers that should make the team this fall.
  6. It's hard to blame Bo when he's playing against arguably the best player in the league. But Bo's line wasn't great last night. I noticed that for the most part Travis kept the third and fourth lines away from McJesus. I can't think of anybody in the bottom six who I'd replace Lind with. Also, I think TG wants to give Lind an honest look, not bury him with guys who either likely won't be here next year, or who will be 4th liners. Travis gave Vesey at lest a few games in the top six, so he's being fair to give Lind the same. So far, I think Lind has looked better than Vesey.
  7. God, I remember that book, from about 4th grade, around 1972. He was the backup goalie, pressed into action because the starter got hurt. He was really fat, and nobody could score because he filled the net, and thanks to our hero, his team won the championship. The next year when they came back to school, he had slimmed down due to training. That was a time in my education where I struggled with reading due to dyslexia and undiagnosed ADD, and my teacher was finding me any book she could that had something to do with hockey, because I would read those cover to cover. 49 years later, I have a BA, an MA and a past career in broadcast radio, and now a 20-year career where I spend a ton of time writing reports.
  8. Better to play him with Bo and Pierson than on the dumpster fire that is our bottom 6. Also, who from the bottom six would you replace him with?
  9. I'd like to see Rathbone, just to see if there's a chance he makes the big club next year.
  10. The best players in this game were Fabian Lysell, who's built like a slightly lighter Hoglander, but might be faster, and the goalie Lindbaum, who held Sweden in the game early.
  11. I don't hate Boyd, I think there's potential there for a bottom 6 center. I think he needs some coaching to better understand his role, but he seems like a decent skater and could be a viable value-priced player, maybe even a replacement for Sutter at about $1 million. He's about Sutter's size, five years younger, and has put up about the same points per game in his NHL career. Vesey is horrible. I don't know if he's gripping the stick too tight trying to make a good impression, but he's had about six golden opportunities and has gacked on all of them. I will say that some of his board work last night was a nice improvement, I've been thinking that he plays way too soft for a guy his size, I'd be happy if he didn't come back next year. This is a good experience for Cole Lind. He has always been slow to acclimate in his first year at a new level, whether it was Jr, the AHL or now the NHL. I think he looks like he belongs at this level, he's a good skater. Once he gets comfortable with thinking the game faster, he'll handle the puck more, and better understand where to be and when to get there. The jump between this year's AHL and the NHL is kind of like two steps since most of the best players who would be on AHL rosters are being carried on NHL taxi squads, which is why I'm hopeful yet dubious about Gadj's stats. It would be good if he's improved his skating enough to compete at this level, a big guy who can screen the goalie, pick up some garbage goals, and drop the mitts once in a while is something we haven't had since Kassian drank is way out of town.
  12. I didn't know that. I live in the US but grew up in Canada. When I lived in Canada, I wasn't that concerned about legal minutia.
  13. I have long thought that the Canucks will protect Lind. He's looked okay in his first two games especially considering he hadn't played in so long. He obviously skates well enough to play at this level, and once he gets used to the faster pace and compressed decision making time, he'll be good. I don't think Seattle will take Gads, it would be a reach to take an AHLer whose scouting report is that he's a questionable skater. He's playing really well in Utica and I'm hoping for big things for him, but don't forget the AHL is a lot weaker this year because teams are carrying taxi squads with the big clubs. I expect the team will protect Motte, unless his latest concussion changes their mind. Jake's problems could not have come at a worse time, as he and Holtby were Seattle's likely targets, now it's just Holtby.
  14. You obviously have no idea do you? Only about 10% of sexual assaults ever get reported. Reporting sexual assault for most women is soul wrenching. The thought of having to relive the worst experience of your life, first in telling a police officer, then telling a prosecutor and finally telling a jury in open court while your assailant sits feet away is more than most people can stand, and it's worse if the attacker is famous. Look how long it took some of Bill Cosby's survivors to come forward. When the assailant is famous, you become famous too, and not for something positive. This woman was probably going to be like the 90% until she found support in that Instagram group. I expect more women to come forward in the next few weeks. It's often like a dam bursting, if there's one, there's more and it sometimes takes the first brave woman to encourage more to break their silence. Rape is not about sex, it's about power. Since they were going to a hotel, she likely expected that they would have sex, it's probably what else happened, or how it happened where she felt victimized. As I keep saying, Jake's not just immature, he doesn't just have low hockey IQ, Jake is stupid. I am sure somebody from the team sat down with him early on, or maybe his agent had the talk with him about protecting himself from these types of situations.
  15. We know that the vast majority of sexual assault survivors never come forward, so I support her. From a quick Google search I was surprised to see that there is no statute of limitations in BC for sexual assault cases. The problem is that the alleged crime happened three and a half years ago, so short of credit card evidence, even proving they were at the hotel will be tough. It's unlikely that any physical evidence remains; cell phone tower data is long gone; as is surveillance video. Google location services might be helpful. One key will be whether she told other people at the time, and whether those witnesses recall similar details. These cases are really hard to prove, especially if she went to a hotel with him voluntarily.
  16. Like a lot of coaches, I think TG is okay if the fight serves a purpose, sparks the team if their flat, answered the bell for a teammate (Hamonic), or made somebody else answer the bell. But a stupid fight that breaks up game flow when your team is pressing the advantage is stupid and should be reason for benching.
  17. He was playing center this year in Utica, first because the system is short on center depth, but also with Sutter"s contract expiring management was prepping Lind for a jump the NHL and saw center as a potential path
  18. 3/4 vs Tor - 3-1 win where he scored twice including GWG and had three hits.
  19. Sadly, Jake was everything JB was looking for in that draft, big, physical, great skater, outstanding shot, and plays with an edge. The Canucks needed a player like that. JB was looking for a feel-good local boy story for the fanbase during dark times. You watch Jake's Calgary Hitmen highlights, and I understand why JB would overlook the essential part of his scouting report, his low hockey IQ. The problem with Jake, and I've said this before, isn't just hockey IQ, he lacks self-discipline, self-motivation and he's not that bright. He plays on a team with two of the hardest-working players in the league, but does he model his effort after Bo or Motte? Nope, he's not that bright. He'll play a few good shifts or even a good game, and those of us desperate for him to turn the corner hope he's finally figured it out, but sadly he always regresses to his slack-ass norm. With Holtby's recent resurgence, I have a feeling that Seattle takes him in the ED, so hopefully, JB can pawn Jake off for a second or a high third-round pick. Travis has given him so many chances in the top-six, and generally, he makes whatever line he's on worse, plays go to die on his stick. Jake is that big kid who developed good eye-hand coordination early and never had to work that hard to be better than everyone else all the way through junior hockey. Still, the pros will tell you, being a professional hockey player is a year-round, full-time job. You have to always stick to your diet and workout schedule; everybody in the NHL is equal to him in coordination, speed, shot etc. The difference between a great pro and Jake is work ethic and IQ.
  20. The giveaway by Schmidt for the first goal is proof positive that having Dmen playing their wrong side is a recipe for disaster. He was trying to go D to D which means he has to turn his back to the Ozone to get anything on the pass. Jake and Vesey both were horrible and now that the emotion of returning to play has worn off, they looked like a tired team much of the game.
  21. I'm hoping the Canucks resign Travis and that Seattle takes Jake off our hands in the ED. The key for Travis is that this team has played better than their talent level over and over to the point that fans don't seem to recognize that it has always been a two-line team, and without EP it's a one-line team. Travis has spoiled the fan base by wringing every bit of talent that this team has to give. As for Jake, the key metric in his pre-draft scouting report was lack of hockey sense. Big, strong, great skater, big shot, he had all they physical gifts. He's got a million dollar body and a ten cent head. He's not smart enough. Honestly, when I look at his face he seems completely vacant, and I'm not trying to be mean. Travis has given him chance after chance after chance, lots of top-six minutes with both EP and Bo. He plays well in little spurts, skates hard for a shift or two, throws a nice hit, makes a good rush, and then completely disappears. On the rare occasion where he has a complete good game or even two, and some of us hope maybe he's turning a corner, he immediately regresses. He plays on a team with guys that he could model his work ethic after, Bo and Motte, neither of whom have his natural talents yet both of whom are 100% better players than Jake. It takes more than physical gifts to be a great hockey player, and Jake proves that every day. His lack of production can no longer be blamed on youth, it's always been a lack of work ethic, lack of desire and he's just dumb.
  22. One problem, Schmidt and Tryamkin are lefties, while Myers is right handed. Over the past year, it's become obvious to me why Green likes to play defensemen on their natural sides, it is a significant advantage in both the offensive and defensive zones. It's far more acute for defensemen than for forwards. I would much rather have a right handed Myers playing the second pairing right side than Schmidt. JB will likely resign Hamonic to a two or three year deal for what sounds like we'll get a hometown discount because Travis likes playing in Vancouver for family reasons. So Hughes and Hamonic will likely be a paring again next season. I can see Schmidt and Myers on the second pairing and because of the flat cap, OJ and maybe Rathbone if he's ready as the third pairing with Chatfield and Sautner or Breezer as 7-8, again to save money. There is no way that Tryamkin signs for ELC level dollars, and the Canucks cannot afford much more than that in the bottom pairing. I think the Canucks trade his rights for either assets or picks. Of course that doesn't take into account a resigning of Edler, but I'm not sure that we could afford him at even half of what he's currently making, and that ends up blocking the development of our young players, who we need to develop for a run in two or three seasons.
