He didn't earn it at all. For a young guy coming in trying to earn a spot on the team, it's his job to force his way onto the team. Chaisson hasn't looked great, but at least in his games he has produced on the pp, something that is one of this teams biggest weaknesses. Management defaulting to a veteran player who fills a team weakness and did come in and force his way on to the team, makes sense over a young player who didn't do anything besides a fight to prove he earned a spot. It's a shame he was picked up, because I would have been fine with him having a call up from Abby with how this season has gone, but I'm not losing sleep over a guy who didn't show well enough to force his way on to the team.

?? That is what I said.

He did not earn a spot in training camp and last year was mediocre at best

And people need to move on and get over loosing a fringe 4th liner

To make a long story short, I had to move to Los Angeles for work in 2019. Previously, I had been jumping back and forth between Vancouver and LA, never staying long enough to make any real friends in LA, though. Right before the pandemic started, I moved to LA permanently for work. Working from home since the beginning of 2020 has made things worse in terms of my social life. I literally spend most of my time alone. I am fully vaccinated but it still kind of scares me to go out and be social. Even when I was in LA before, all my best friends were in Vancouver so I would constantly fly back to hang out with them, but with the pandemic, that's pretty hard to do now. It's also very difficult to meet people in LA and the pandemic has made it worse.

How do you deal with loneliness, especially now that the pandemic has made meeting people harder?

&^@# Covid, your vaccinated, stop being scared,

Get a hobby, join a activity group. get a pet, borrow a pet, volunteer and get out a make a difference. you will meet other people to socialize with.

Why? From my eye test I thought Mac was mediocre this preseason. For a guy fighting for one of the last spots on the roster I don't think he did nearly enough to hold that spot.

    Bingo.

AND he did not earn a spot on the Canucks during camp and he was mediocre at best last year.

AND he is gone, not part of our team.

I have to agree with others, your non stop name calling is so unbecoming and Immature at this point it's borderline abuse and defamation of character. We ALL know exactly how you feel about coach Green

When you lose as bad as we have been players should be pissed off and going out to hit guys and start a fight or something to spark the team...oh wait we got rid of anyone willing to do that and Schenn is hurt or else he probably would've

If it is the dressing room, and the coach is not being listened to...

What would shake up things, a suggestion is to trade Bo for help on the RHD and fire Green and hire a new coach(es).

Now that would shake things up.  Maybe give OEL the C, or just work with three assistant Cs for the season.

Bo's time here has been wasted by terrible managing. I think he's mentally exhausted. Especially dealing with post losing game interviews. He's a nice guy, and a decent player.  But not that consistent, and needs to work on his defensive game. And he's going to want a raise when his contract is up. A change of scenery would probably really help his career.

I may get flamed to even suggest this but its time for the next wave to take over the leadership group.  Boeser, Petey, Hughes,...

Bo seems like a more of a honorary captain.  Other than complete his shifts on the ice, what does he do other than being spokesperson after a game?  So many games where we need some kind of message sent.  If its not with goals, then physically. And Bo just seems to reflect other teammates. If they are happy and up, you may get a smile. If they are mad and sad, he is mad and sad.  If he skates past trouble, they skate past trouble. Do you ever notice how its usually the new guys that stick up for teammates if they get hurt from a dirty hit?  That's the way they do it on the team they left. But after playing here for a few years, they take their cues from the captain who couldn't be bothered.  Podz will be crippled soon if this goes on.

After a lot of years watching him as Captain, the one night I remember was the game after being named captain, he scored a hat trick at home. That was a statement, and everyone was happy with him.  But he's coasted a lot since then. Both on and off the ice.  A captain should inspire. Should always be living a few moments ahead of the other players, if you know what I mean. Anticipating the room, and take charge. Not just be one of the boys, only with a C on his jersey.

If it was between Bo, Boeser, and Miller gone as has been suggested, I'd choose Bo.   I don't get running Miller out of town, our top scorer last season, and this season. And one of the only Canucks that seems to care. And Boeser is one of our core scorers going into his prime. He'll be better.  Unless we are writing off the season already I guess.  And we can't just demote Bo, that would REALLY screw up the room. But trading him would definitely force other players to step up and try and fill that leadership void.  Plus a new head coach to facilitate that.  Plus if we could shore up our RHD problem.

    No

I don’t think they really have any “leaders”, though. Certainly not amongst any of the guys from the last 2-3 years who aren’t here now. MAYBE Beagle. I think he’s definitely a “locker room guy” and why he was brought here in the first place.

And, I think the change in Edmonton is down to 2 words: Dave Tippett. Same with the change in Calgary: Daryl Sutter.

Are you seriously implying that Bo Horvat and JT Miller have no leadership over team?

He's playing in their system right now - a conditioning stint.   The reality is - last season OJ Myers wasn't a bad pairing and he can PK better then Rathbone.   The team could have kept OJ and sent Rathbone down ... OR kept OJ in the press box as the 7th D.   Instead they went with what they did - and by the way, if a player who is about to be waived, can actually be traded first - he's absolutely going to be picked up on waivers.   The team including JB because he's the boss - but for sure TG too, made mistakes this pre-season.   Doubt OJ and Gadj would be enough, but you never know.

I agree that JB and Green, in our opinions, made mistakes this preseason

But the reality is OJ, Gadj, ZMac, Dahlen are gone. Period. No longer part of the organization.

We need solutions now, not continually going over the coulda woulda shoulda endlessly

    How did Benning do that?

Did he hire a Russian troll farm to spread anti-Dahlen propaganda across Facebook during the US election?

Did Benning have a secret meeting with our alien lizard overlords from another dimension to conspire to derail Dahlen’s career and in exchange he agreed to sell the soul of the Canucks franchise during his tenure as GM?

(because of course the only thing that could derail Dahlen’s career would be alien….WAIT! noooo not Pettersson - OR WAS IT?!?!?)

    Quotes from TSN Radio:

A lot of Vancouver fans have criticized Vancouver general manager for trading Jonathan Dahlen to the San Jose Sharks for Linus Karlsson at the trade deadline. And he has broken his silence surrounding as to why he traded Elias Pettersson's friend.

A lot of criticism came Benning's way at the trade deadline when news broke that he had traded Elias Pettersson's friend, Jonathan Dahlen. It was later revealed that Dahlen requested a trade due to not being in the NHL.

“ I find sometimes young players now, sometimes they don't want to pay their dues in development time. They just want an NHL opportunity off the start. We just felt there was development left before that, and I guess that's where the discrepancy was “, Benning stated while he was on TSN Radio Vancouver.

According to Dahlen's agent, Dahlen wasn't happy by the way he was being developed by the franchise, and is fine with the trade.

“There was frustration with the way he was being developed but they wanted to see more from him. It goes both ways. He's fine with this”, his agent JP Barry stated during a press conference.

Yeah, you’re right, absolutely trashed him. Benning should be Me Too’d for this brutal character assassination and racial discrimination and all of the Canucks management either forced to resign by the league or seek sensitivity training and perform community service…like cleaning up the garbage we see on the ice at the moment.

Sorry Timrafan, I get that you love Dahlen as a player and that’s cool with me, but when his own agent admits he needed to perform better or show a bit more to earn his place, and that the player accepts that, well, it says something.

I’m not arguing he could turn out to be an amazing player, but there are copious amounts of stories like this scattered through NHL history. And although you want to blame Benning for what transpired, I think you have to accept that there is a very strong likelihood that Dahlen’s agent JP Barry got involved and caused some friction. It takes two to tango. I don’t think it was an easy decision to trade away EP’s best friend but likely what was required for both parties at the time.

On the flip side of this, I also want to say it sounds as though the trade to SJ woke him up a bit and I hope he blows up in the NHL. He seems to have the right attitude and is in a better environment to succeed. That’s just the way it goes.

If he’s successful it might also cause some friendly competition between him and EP which is another way to keep a player’s fire lit.

    Maybe he is Dahlen

I base my opinion on facts.
Facts is Benning tried to save face not only once but at least two times I’ve seen.

The other option is that Benning is not very intelligent talking to journalists.

If so he’s not fit to be a GM either.

The GM is the front figure talking to media all the time.

Personal emotion or bias… It’s knowledge how business is done nowadays.
I see a strong resemblence with Trumpfans and Benningfans. Neither Trump nor Benning can do anything wrong and if they have done something altruistically they can never be a brute.
Fine, then I know Trump never lies and he never gave away money etc to fool the simple man.
Trump and others often do this type of altruistic activities and make sure the media talks about it.

And where does the thing about Benning being so honest comes from?
How can anyone tell that if their not very close?

There you can talk about bias. Benning knows how to say things that resonate with some of the fans.

    What fact? Or facts?

This all Just your OPINION plain and simple

The ship will keep on sailing with or without jb or green... Gillis and linden wanted a complete rebuild not some bandaid solution for short term gain. They both got axed. Benning said the right things to the owner and got hired.. they put all there eggs on petey, which is unfair because we all know they have sophomore funks after a good season or 2 but looks like this year, petey is in is sophomore funk and with the big contract it's over whelming. Put back peteys goalie skates and he will be better. It's because canucks coach wanted to change the style that he is used to.. wearing goalie skates all his life then. Changes to something he wasn't used to.. it's why he keeps losing balance.....

do those things need to be mutually exclusive?  In fact, I'd say a toxic culture in the dressing room and a strained relation ship between players and coaches go hand in hand.  Probably the best move, going forward, is to replace the coach and remove the player(s) causing the issues.

They absolutely go hand in hand, everyone involved must take some responsibility,  we'll except Nils Hog

You still don’t get it. Benning threw a prospect under the bus so that the person went through a hatestorm online.

Affecting him and his family and friends.

If you still are focused on Dahlen you think very wrong.

Threw him under the Bus? Good lord man

The kid refused to develop in the AHL and hated coach Cull. He was small and weak at the time and we moved on.

It's really not all that different from other teams except that is literally our only play and as a result, it is not successful.

There is a reason why every team sends in 2 fore checkers deep against us and a 3rd in the high slot and a defensemen that rushes the winger on the half wall.

They do this repeatedly because we do what we do repeatedly and for them it works because it causes turnovers and chances for them.

If you watch other teams, they don't always send in 2 fore checkers deep yet against us, that is pretty much the play every time and yet we have no answers.

That to me is on coaching.

And I would send 2 FC in all game, every game on Hunt and Bowey

Never been one for them video game things

I don't need to be a rocket scientist but let's see....

    1) Passive box on the PK? Let them pass it along the outside but try to get in the shooting lanes. Don't tire yourself out by being aggressive and pressuring. Try to block and clear or let Demko save and then try to clear rebound.

Funny though becuase they are also letting through an absurdly high amount of cross seam passes right through the box.

    2) PP? Same as PK but reversed. Pass it along the outside and try to free up Petey on the one timer.

Have we even tried to play below the goal line yet? We just started moving our feet.

This is reinforced / validated by Petey who said last year, that PP strategy worked but this year it seems like teams have caught on and so they are  trying to switch it up with more movement and switches.

    3) DEFENSIVE BREAKOUTS- D retrieves puck below the goal line, winger skates to the hashmarks and stops and receives the puck. (at this point, he is just a passer as his feet is not even moving. No other options for this winger besides a cross ice pass or smashing it off the boards and giving up posession)

Opposite side winger and centre streak down their lanes (they don't even mix that up or do any crossing / run subtle interference... Just straight lines...

Winger either passes it right away (intercepted or tipped half the time by 3rd forechecker) or if winger sees the opposing centre in the passing lane, they'll hold if for a split second to let the opposite winger create space and give him a passing lane.

Problem is, opposing coaches will know this is coming so D comes and pinches down on the winger to take away time forcing a turnover..

This is where Green drives me bonkers. This system is so predictable and unchanging that opposing coaches auto do this. It started against Mtl last year and any team that spent time watching video will just rinse and repeat.

For TG, to know that opposing team will send 2 fore checkers in deep, with 3rd forechecker in the middle of the ice and the D pinching in along the boards to the winger yet he can't figure out how to take this knowledge into a clean odd man breakout is shocking.

Canucks almost caught the ducks on one play yesterday where they did something out of the norm and I caught it right away because it wasn't the usual play.

That is in itself a problem when someone like me knows exactly what our guys are going to do 95% of the time.

I don't care if we ice it a couple of times. On one of these puck retrievals, just send up someone like Hogs and goal suck at their blue line and have Hughes smash it down the ice and turn it into a foot race . Worst case is icing and the opposing team reevaluating their strategy whether they should be sending 4 guys in below our hashmarks.

An analogy is football. Opposing team comes with a full blitz every single play. Any competent coach or qb will call an audible for a quick hit to the slot or motion with WR coming in for a quick slant route while an RB will step up with a chop block on the closest threat.

Do you guys remember that playoff game where I think it was Lapierre or Higgins sitting on the dasher of the bench boards waving their stick and then receiving a pass that caught the other team completely unprepared?

Basically we had 4 guys on the ice with the 5th (Higgins) pretty much goal sucking without anyone noticing.

TG only knows how to play hockey one way, and the problem is, he's forcing a team to play only one way.

    span widgetspan widget

There, good explanations, basic hockey system stuff, not rocket science. All teams implement multiple systems all game long.

Canucks systems are not radically different than other teams, it's the execution by players and the implmentation, when, who, where, by the coaches to manage the game
