  1. i wonder if it is as simple as motte being hurt in camp and therefore not being waivable right now. he gets healthy and switches seats with barrtschi assuming gaudette stays up. meanwhile, canucks are carrying 7 centres right now and utica is one short.
  2. quiet player. he never caught my eye in la even though i think of him as a scoring threat watching him here it's the same. rarely heard his name called. then he scores a nice goal. i will wait the obligatory ten games to see what we have when the adrenaline wears off. cautiously optimistic.
  3. that is a good point. i don't think sutter has been 100% since his first injury so if he is not fully healthy they might ease him in on the wing while keeping and dressing gaudette up the middle.
  4. i agree he is fairly complete but he needs to upgrade his skating to really impress me. i see a strong straight liner who played a power game in the ncaa that he is likely not big enough for in the nhl, but i don't see a guy yet who can out turn a dman or beat him off the boards. the thing i like most about him is his obvious drive and focus to be better (as opposed to being just an energy guy). that can move mountains and is why he stands out to me.
  5. decent careful by the book game and looks like a player. needs to be more physical but that's expected. a little bit slow on decision making and had trouble deciding what to do when it got chaotic and sometimes did nothing. all in all, a respectable start.
  6. maybe he gets papered, but i think gaudette will make it very hard to get demoted again.
  7. nice to see him make stuff happen. you get the feeling he has the drive to overcome the shortcomings in his game.
  8. jd burke is a blogger who in the past has trashed the drafting/signing of adam gaudette, zack mcewan and matthew tkachuk just off the top of my head. i appreciate the guy's dedication and statistical knowledge but he is a stat hound who knows nothing whatever about developing players in the minors, having never spent a nanosecond in the minors being developed or developing guys and having no useful insight that i can see (full disclaimer, i was down on tkachuk also but i don't evaluate hockey players for a living). i also want to be quick to say i don't know what's going on in utica either and nor do i know the pros and cons of cull's approach. i am just saying burke's opinion on this subject had no weight for me one way or the other. i am much more interested in the comments of comets fans who go to games and watch closely. by and large, they have supported the idea that several in this crop of canucks prospects were not ready to play regularly in the ahl when they got here and have been brought along appropriately relative to how they have performed. i will also say that, anecdotally, junior kids other than the cream of the crop taking half a season at least to adjust to the ahl seems like par for the course.
  9. you gotta love that our ahl team now has to play our goalie who got claimed on waivers by another team. it certainly seems like someone in philly is trolling the canucks.
  10. you are comparing different skating skillsets. rathbone is more like brett hedican, who was an incredible natural graceful power skater but lacked stick handling skills and sneaky elusive edgework. he could outrun you forwards of backwards but he was rarely going to trick you into turning the wrong way.
  11. that's just not fair. i think even the strongest critics of the canuck's strategy for utica do it within a framework that respects that utica is a farm team that must put development of prospects first. their argument is that a well built farm team with its own structure and veteran mentors is good for everyone and especially for the prospects. i actually think it's remarkable how few "utica first" comets fans there are posting here given human nature.
  12. i don't say "play the kids" or at least i am not complaining about the fact some kids are seeing limited action. i just say that there were times in the fall when the kids who were playing were playing on a team that was a mess.
  13. not to excuse the most extreme manifestations of what you describe, but i think it's fair to say it's been a bumpy ride and there were points where the plan was not working and the youngsters were not in a nurturing structured environment and saying that was fair comment. you can blame that on injuries i guess but there was reason for concern. i also am skeptical he recent moves benefiting the comets were initiated to benefit the comets. we just happened to pick up some assets that help the farm/ that being said, you are somewhat right. the lesson that "it all comes out in the wash" is probably a good one for purposes of farm team watching. plus we got saucerman
  14. i assume kero is getting a paycheck reward and is an extra man on the roster insurance who is unlikely to dress. the canucks going down to 7 dmen and carrying 2 extra forwards likely means utica guys other than gaudette are going to see reward call ups where they may ride the pine but will cash cheques, especially if goldobin is also moved which i think is now likely. the comments on the broadcast last night by dan murphy was that coaching staff felt they had done all they can with goldy in terms of additional coaching and now it is up to him. that means to me he is down to his last chance.
  15. these are kids who even as late rounders come to the ahl used to a top six role and having leeway to set their own gunslinger agenda and used to being overlooked and forgiven for their shortcomings. they suddenly get zero leeway to make mistakes or even an opportunity to play top 6 and instead have to learn a bottom six game and work their way back to top 6 under a tight leash. that is very frustrating for them, especially if they are top 6 or bust type prospects. they are basically reigned in from doing what got them drafted until the rest of their game catches up and in some cases the rest of their game is sorely underdeveloped.. there's a double standard on this too. more highly touted prospects do get the leeway and opportunity to cut corners, play their game and short cut into the nhl and figure it out there. guys just below that cut off have a hard time understanding why they are treated so very differently. in the end, the goal is survive the ordeal of the ahl boot camp with the top end of your game that got you drafted intact so you can eventually get called up and make an impact in the nhl. they have to remember that guys getting more minutes them do not necessarily have their tools and that this too shall pass.
  16. in less starts on a better defensive team where he was seeing less shots. belleville is playing a 20 year old prospect with an .889 sv% in most of their games this year and still has a better defensive record than utica. but, yes, hopefully mckenna can give the team some solid veteran goaltending.
  17. not easy to see utica getting better out of this if demko sticks with the canucks, but at least they got something back for a change. gaudette and pyatt should help the forward crew. mckenna replaces bachman at minimum.
  18. well, you can both be right, i think the decisions he made resulted in political decisions being made to exclude him. i also respect him for rowing his own boat.
  19. i like the trade even if nilsson makes good in ottawa. he was done here, and the return gives us an ahl starter who can be called up if demko can't cut it. also, nice to give archibald a chance elsewhere. i think he was done here also.
  20. the issue with quinn will be how disruptive he will be to team defence, given he will be looking to play 20 plus minutes. if he can make his d game work and/or find a complimentary guy who can cover for him and have the team maintain defensive shape when he is on the ice it will be awesome. hence they want to keep tanev. the danger is the phil housley sutuation where, as good as he was on offence, you could staple the guy on the bench with a good forecheck and he was good to allow multiple oddman rushes per game.
  21. really enjoying this player so far. however this guy turns out long term, he was exactly what the canucks needed when we got him.
