1st round Canucks will not get RHD.

Canucks need a TOP end scoring Winger imo. That can only be found high in the draft.

Just curious, which wingers would you like to see the Canucks target?

As far as guys that might still be on the board, Guenther, Sillinger and Lysell really jump out for me.

Guenther is a better forward than what people on here are giving him credit for. His overall body of work has established that. Problem is recency bias and one tourney might devalue him and raise up someone like cuelmans who had a great u18 which is allowing alot of people to ignore alot of problems he has had with brooks in the ajhl.

I agree. Recency bias is truly a powerful factor in decision making. These two write ups about him from http://www.mynhldraft.com/2021-nhl-draft/player-profiles/Dylan-Guenther really make me believe that he’s a far more well rounded player than just the goal scorer that myself and some others have been pegging him as:

    Dylan Guenther's Player Profile

Steve Kournianos - The Draft Analyst - May 24th: "He may look wiry, but this dual-threat from the flank is an excellent penalty killer who also plays with snarl."

Sam Cosentino - Sportsnet - May 12th: "Thinks the game at a high level and is constantly utilizing all resources to improve his game. While offence is what jumps out, the proficiency in his game extends the length of the ice."

I don't know, I wouldn't be completely shocked to see Wallstedt go 2nd overall. SEA will need a star goaltender for their future. Build from the net out.

That’s a good idea. I honestly hadn’t thought of that. I think if Buffalo picks Power then there is a reasonable chance that SEA goes with Wallstedt. But if Buffalo goes with anyone else, then I imagine SEA will take Power.

I really hope that Wallstedt does go anywhere before our pick because that will mean that Benning and co will have their choice between two of the players in which seems to be shaking out to be the top nine this year:

    Power

    Beniers

    Edvinsson

    Clarke

    Eklund

    Hughes

    Guenther

    McTavish

    Johnson

Of course a few of those names will certainly by off the board by the time we pick; Power and Beniers come to mind.

Then again maybe Benning is targeting one of the other many talented players, such as Sillinger, Lucius, Lysell, Svechkov, etc. My gut tells me that if it’s anyone outside of the nine listed above that it’s Sillinger.

I did find it interesting though that the other day Benning did mention that there are nine players he really likes and that there really does (IMO) seem to be nine players that are rounding out the top of this draft.

McTavish is lower than 9 on a lot more lists than he is above. https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/479812/mason-mctavish

Personally, I prefer a high end athlete in the top ten.  Although he is a solid prospect & he is big.  Maybe he is faster than I am ranking?

I say “fall into our lap” because I feel that he’s the exact type of player that we need. Then again so too is Brandt Clarke but I’m not holding out hope that we land him.

in regards to those rankings on elite prospects, the majority of the rankings that have him lower are older rankings, such as Dobber which was from March, and Nuetral Zone which was from December, and SMAHT Scouting which were “Winter Rankings.” McTavish did a lot to raise his stock over the course of the year.

  6. Based on stats alone, Power really looks to have come to life in the world hockey championship the last two games. He’s logging a ton of minutes (2nd most minutes a few games ago, and by far the most mins in today’s game) and he’s putting up points too. The best part is that this all against men.

I think I have pretty much made up my mind on top 10 draft order in terms of from a Canucks perspective. I have watched enough shift by shifts and games of all of them and many others that unless a whole bunch of new footage became available I feel comfortable with this order strictly from a Canucks perspective.

    1 Clark

    2 Beniers

    3 Luke

    4 Eklund *BPA

    5 Lysell *BPA

    6 Edvinsson

    7 Mctavish

    8 Wallstedt *BPA

    9 Sillinger

    10 Svechkov

    11 Raty

Soo I'm really waaaaaay more interested in the glimmer men. If you're like me you sat down to watch footage of a certain player or certain games because there were players you wanted to watch and someone unexpected caught your attention. Who's got late round dark horses?

Evan Nause anyone? LHD Offense defense physicality skating I like what I see.

Roman Schmidt 6'6  Behemoth stay home RHD Skates incredibly well. Turns better than Juolevi. Its almost as if his parents were figure skaters moves in all directions well uses his reach and if he misses he won't with the body.

Samuel Helneius This is one big man zipping all over the ice.

Kirill Kirsanov. Great 2 way play impressive at stuffing attackers before they have a chance to create anything.

It’s very interesting that you don’t have Power in there. I must say though that based on stats alone (as I haven’t been watching the tourney) he seems to be struggling at the world championship right now. Another -2 today. Then again the whole Canadian team seems to be struggling.

Eklund has been making his way up in my list. He and Clarke are the two players I think I would like to see the Nucks target if we win one of the lottery picks.

  8. This my personal list, in order, of the players that I’d love to see the Canucks pick:

    Brandt Clarke, RHD

    Matthew Beniers, C/W

    Owen Power, LHD

    Luke Hughes, LHD

    William Eklund, C/W

    Kent Johnson, C

    Simon Edvinsson, LHD

    Dylan Guenther, C/W

    Mason McTavish, C

    Fabian Lysell, RW

    Chaz Lucius, C

    Cole Sillinger, LW

    Corson Ceulemans, RHD

It’s going to be very interesting to see where the goalie, Jesper Wallstedt is picked. That could bump a very good player down to us!

Still hopeful someone like Clarke can slip to 9.

If not Johnson looks pretty good. Hopefully this years Zegras.

Crazier things have happened. Even having Quinn Hughes fall to us at 7 was pretty miraculous.

Also this site has Clarke going 8th:

     http://www.mynhldraft.com/NHL-Mock-Draft/

I’d be entirely shocked if Clarke fell out of the top 5 though.

I might get flamed for this, but the one of the big four D men that I could see possibly falling a touch is actually Hughes. Then again he could just as easily go second overall though. It’s such a wonky draft this year lol

  10. 1 hour ago, Junkyard Dog said:

Most mocks have him top 3. I wish he’d drop but I doubt it. The only one of the top D that might drop is Edvinsson but even then he might not even fall that far to 9th+ overall.

Lysell/Johnson/McTavish are in our range. These guys I could see a team going ‘off-the-board’ in the top 7-8 too if I were to make a presumption.

Either way we are in for a decent player.

    This right here.

We’re going to have some high quality players to choose from. I would’ve loved one of the big four D men but I’m not getting my hopes up for that anymore. It could still happen though.

My gut is telling me that McTavish will be the guy this year, and that would be pretty awesome. Unless Eklund happens to fall, in which case I can’t see the Nucks passing on a Swede of that caliber.

  11. 1 hour ago, Chip Kelly said:

Agree with the big 4 d being gone.  Lysell or Johsnon could be the pick.

Could he fall a bit since his season ended premature due to having to get surgery right into the Canucks laps?

I tend to agree though it doesn't seem these  top 15 forwards who are listed as centers necessarily project as pivots in the NHL outside of Berniers.

Feel like the big name d will be off the board before the Canucks pick.

The most likely selection will be a winger.

Likely Lysell and Johnson are the two most realistic Canucks picks to continue to add some much needed speed and skill to the top 9.

What’s your take on Chaz Lucius? The guy puts up insane numbers everywhere he goes and is apparently very competitive. I can’t help but think that if he was able to play in the U18 tourney that his stock would be soaring right now (but maybe not).

If we somehow end up picking near the 10 spot I would be very happy with this selection. I think that there will be a lot of solid players to choose from though in that spot; Lucius, McTavish, Johnson, and Lysell could almost all still be on the board.

    - Well, we will go 7 and 0 and Green will say these guys are professionals, and played with heart and class

    - Benning will announce he has re-signed Sutter and Edler because no team wins a cup without 34 year olds

    - Seattle will take Lind and we will be stuck with Myers and Holtby

    - Green will announce he is going to Columbus, but his assistants have re-signed with Vancouver for another 5 years

    - Loui Eriksson takes a buyout, re-signs with Boston and scores 30 goals

    - Tryamkin will still be wearing his Vancouver Canuck jersey on his profile page

    - Aqualini will announce he is selling the team to Eugene Melnyk

    - and Bettman announces that Vancouver wins the 2021 lottery, only to announce moments later that the 3 was really an 8 and the pick belongs to Buffalo

Lol! Can I nominate this for post of the year? So good!

    So 7 games left

    Calgary 4

    Winnipeg 2

    Edmonton 1

If we go 2-5 in the remaining 7 games then we finish with the 5th overall pick!

In classic Canuck fashion we will screw up this screwed up season by sweeping the flames in our final four games against them lol!

    Come on Brandt Clarke!

You all laughed at me when I said trade virtanen for pool party last year while his value was low

every one was like noooooooo wayyy virtanen is going to break out and be way better! Real top six next year

I was just sitting here waiting for everyone to stop sniffing the glue and now it’s too late

and when tofolli walked and virtanen got pay I had a feeling this season would be like this

    #Filthy McNasty for GM

A lot of people yes, but definitely not everyone. I watched this kid play a lot of junior games and I was staggered by how simple his North / South game was and how low his hockey IQ was. I’ve never seen him turning into more that a third liner who could bang (only when he feels into it) and pop in some goals now and then and I’ve been very vocal about that.

You’re completely right though, when we allotted a chunk of our limited salary cap to him over Tofolli the season was off to a bad start.

For anyone interested, here's my current top 20, with some writeups.

    1. Matthew Beniers C - Floor is very high, ceiling might not be Hart/Art Ross candidate, but could be in the Toews/Bergeron stratosphere of two-way franchise centers.

    2. Brandt Clarke RD - Elite all-around defenseman. The safest pick of the D in this draft, but also high upside. Physical, good gap, good stick, high hockey IQ, phenomenal breakout passer under pressure - not as likely as some of the other top D in this draft to skate it up ice himself, although I have seen him do it successfully at the pro level when needed. The first game I saw him at U17s, with his team down a goal with a couple minutes left, he threw a big open ice hit to kill a rush dead, and then in the dying seconds he took the point shot that was tipped in to tie the game. A perfect microcosm of how he impacts the game all over the ice. Not sure just how high the offensive ceiling is. He's not a high risk player, he picks his spots carefully. His stick skills are nothing exciting; his best offensive tools are his IQ, vision and dynamic/deceptive skating - keeps opponents on their toes with quick, shifty pivots. Reminds me of Josh Morrissey and Drew Doughty.

    3. Carson Lambos LD - Comes with big question marks, but his upside is as high as any defenseman in the draft. Dominant defensively at U17s and in SM Sarja. Matched against top lines at 16 in WHL. Not afraid to make moves and attack defenders in the offensive zone as well as forecheckers in his own zone. Loves to try hitting the stretch pass to a streaking forward. But there is definite cause for concern with some of his decision-making and trying to force things offensively. I can't help but see shades of P.K. Subban.

    4. Luke Hughes LD - Elite skater, solid defensively. Pro-style game. Better offensive upside than Clarke and safer than Lambos. He doesn't force the issue offensively like Lambos, but he creates more offense than Clarke, just by supporting and staying above the puck and letting things come to him. Unlike his brother he doesn't sacrifice defense to create offense - he picks his spots well, and just always seem to find ways to contribute offensively without putting himself in compromised positions. Upside would be something like Duncan Keith or Roman Josi. Obviously that's a longshot, but they weren't expected to be superstars either, but elite skating and just doing every little thing the right way goes a long way.

    5. Kent Johnson C/LW - Creativity is the name of the game. His talent level is immense and he's always trying things, never boring or predictable. Loves to curl back entering the offensive zone, but he'll also gladly spin off a forcheck in the defensive zone. Certainly not a north-south player. I don't mean to overplay how not-coach-friendly he is though - this isn't Antonio Stranges; he's more in the Cole Perfetti category of players who are going to drive pro coaches crazy. I made no qualms about not being a big Perfetti fan last year, but Johnson uses his teammates better and he's a better skater, not to mention 3 inches taller. Best case scenario might be something like Claude Giroux.

    6. Owen Power LD - Size, skill, hockey sense are all exceptional. He's very mobile for his size, but his skating is most impressive straight ahead. His quickness and agility are slightly worrisome, as fast NCAAers tend to beat him to the outside and on retrievals. Also needs to be more aggressive and physical. He absolutely loves to lead the rush. Dougie Hamilton would be a reasonable comparison.

    7. Cole Sillinger C - A goal-scoring two-way center most known for his shot and sky-high hockey IQ. I saw a scouting report recently questioning his defensive ability, but it seems like everywhere I look he's disrupting his opponents' offense or transition. He's always wrecking havoc in front of the opposing goalie, and he's a brilliant shot-tipper. Doesn't wow with his passing or stick skills, and I'm not sure how high is the offensive upside, but he's a pro-style player and a coach's dream. I see a little bit of Joe Pavelski in him.

    8. William Eklund LW/C - Probably the most dynamic offensive player in the draft. Constantly darting and shifting around - a bit like Rossi in last year's draft, but a more explosive skater. It looks like his skates are spring-loaded. Also like Rossi, he loves battling it out in front of the net despite his small stature. He sometimes reminds me of Johnny Gaudreau.

    9. Dylan Guenther LW - North-south winger with good size, good speed, high compete, and a well-rounded arsenal of skills. Extremely dangerous one on one because he can beat guys outside with his speed and strength, or deke them, or shoot through them, all with high success rates. Pacioretty or Taylor Hall would be decent loose comparables.

    10. Chaz Lucius C

    11. Simon Edvinsson LD

    12. Aatu Räty C

    13. Fabian Lysell RW

    14. Fyodor Svechkov C - I know, I know, I'm a lone voice in the wilderness here. But I thought he was Russia's best all-around forward at U17 Challenge, and second best at 5 Nation U17s, behind Danila Yurov. Not as purely skilled or as high upside as Chibrikov, but he brings a more NHL-adaptable game. He's good in the corners, wins battles, gets to the net, he's responsible defensively, thinks and sees the game very well. His skillset is quite high end, though not elite, but he's also an incredibly clever offensive player.

    15. Zach Bolduc C

    16. Jesper Wallstedt G

    17. Nikita Chibrikov RW

    18. Oskar Olausson LW/RW

    19. Xavier Bourgault C

    20. Corson Ceulemans - RD

    Great list. Thank you.

Every draft I allow myself to dream big, and this year those dreams consist of winning a lottery pick and taking Clarke, and then somehow getting another first round pick and taking Wallstedt.

Loading up the back end like that could be a proper recipe for future success.

  16. It sounds like there a lot of high end D men that are going to go early in this draft. I truly hope we manage snag one of them. I just hope we pick the one who is the best on the defensive side of the game. We already have Hughes who can rack up points and run the power play, but now we just need another high caliber defender who is elite on the defensive side of the game.

  17. I am such a big fan of Hoglander. His game, his interviews, his confidence. This kid is an absolute steal with the 40th pick.

We came from having the big five players on our team, to now having the big six IMO. And so many other nice pieces around those six to boot (Demko, Schmidt, Motte, Podz eventually, and more of course). I’m loving the way our roster is shaping up.
