Ha everyone is focused on the op mentioning assistant coach but he also says bring in Russian free agents, Ufas I agree bring some in. If you look back on the Sedins time they had nazzy here and other swedes along the way...wasn't that the reason Matt Sundin came to Van? And isn't that why van is known for a great spot for Swedish players? I think it helps prospects having someone there to help them adjust to North America.

Thank you . You said it way better than I did

Absolutely not.   You don't cater to a specific group in a team game...it's up to the players to learn English and their teammates can help them with that as part of the bonding experience.

Many players struggle entering the league ... for different reasons.  But it weeds out the weak from the strong, the committed to the half hearted, the guys with the drive to do anything to be here and win.  Not prima donnas who need everything perfectly in order as to their standards or they cry and go home.

I don't know that "most" Russian players have bad experiences "in Vancouver" or that other teams have more success with Russians.  I believe it's more a current climate of players getting big contracts and having demands and that can somehow trickle into their mindset.  That, with the big bucks comes a sense of power.  Perhaps it's more that the Russian players are a bit more stubborn in relation to this?  I don't even think there's a reversal happening - the team drafts the BPA that fits their vision.  It's not a matter of "choosing Russians".

As seen now with teams taking more of a stand you don't always kowtow to demands or it can open up a can of worms.   So no, you don't start customizing the team to fit a player or two or focus only on "one" player.  That short changes the others.  The players adapt to the NHL and the team they're chosen for...or they can take the next flight out.  Unless you're Petey...then you give the boy what he wants.

How does helping someone Automatically hurt others ? So you don't like goalie coaches either ? they are primarily for only a couple of players .   Any advantage over other teams that the the Canucks could take advantage of to help attract top free agents should always be considered . Sorry I could not leave this one alone but I do think your thinking is pre cap era . Now the best way for teams that don't get tax advantages to try things to lure better free agents as teams can spend as much on anything other than players . The swedes and other euro players already have a community here . Sorry again you didn't like my post But your last comment was nothing but mean

  3. With the Canucks apparent reversal in Drafting top quality Russians . Are there things to make the Canucks a more friendly destination for Russian players . With Glody if he sticks and the return of Tryamkin and the arrival of Podkolzin would a Russian free agent or two in the next couple years be worth more to this group now ? Is hiring a English/Russian speaking assistant coach an asset . What makes some other teams Russia Friendly ?

  4. After reading everybody's  posts and than rereading the article other than getting everybody talking in the summer not sure "exactly" who it was meant to be insulting ? Benning for his contract , the coaches for his deployment or maybe his fault for getting injured "I remember one of his qualities when he was signed was that he never missed games " . He will not play on the pp will always start the PK .  Will not have many faceoffs in the offensive end after an icing against the opponents bottom 6 But will mostly take faceoffs after an icing in the Canucks end against the opponents best . Looking forward to seeing what he can do if he can stay healthy and have an improved Jake on one side  [ yes I think he just keeps getting better every year ] and Baertschi or Ferland on the other wing  . Along with a defence core that can get the puck out of there own end . Not expecting 20 goals from him but 12 to 15 would be welcome

  5. Gillis's Canucks shoulda/coulda won not 1 but 2 Stanley Cups and if they had he would probably have a statue built . I like Gillis not trying to throw him under any busses but to get what he accomplished   he gave a lot of No trade clauses and traded away many draft picks . remembering our firsts were always near the bottom of the first round etc . So for many years we had No up-n-comers . Bennings hands were tied on who he could trade and every player agent will say that the first item of signing a free agent is the TAXES so some teams [ mostly Canadian teams ] have to really sweeten the pot with extra money or term to get them here . I don't agree with everything JB has done . I think injuries have really halted his ability to make the trades he could of at the trade deadlines . When he has said that they do not want a "Losing Culture " they knew they would lose many more games than they would win . They said they just wanted to be in those games 4/3 or 3/2 Not 7/2 Blowouts all the time .... Sorry for the Rant

    You people are so blind.

Gillis was fired for wanting to trade away the core which would have replenished all of the lost picks he used.

Wah wah Gillis traded away picks to make a cup run and didn't refill the cupboards even though when he tried he got fired.

Like I said repeatedly, jb has only done 1/3 of his job well. He doesn't deserve an extension until after this season if the progress continues, but he got one so I sure hope it does anyway.

After coming on here and reading all your posts I never have to wonder why the rest of the world mocks canuck fans like you. Zero respect for the man who took us to game 7, blind faith in a man who has proven nothing.

    Makes me sick.

Gillis was fired for wanting to trade away the core which would have replenished all of the lost picks he used.  Confused the core that he gave all no trade clauses to?

I was surprised at the news of Benning's extension.

But I'm not surprised either, like a few other fans have been. I think in light of how the organization has drafted in previous years, this has to be the 'best' years of the organization's drafting. The point keeps being brought up that there is no GM that has hit on all of their picks 100 percent of the time. And that is certainly true. Benning has done the best he's been able to do, especially when he first came to the team. I remember he was dealt a crippled hand with the whole Kesler situation.

And while he's "missed" on Juolevi and Virtanen (who may not have been the best pick at the time, but he will be a serviceable NHL player, I think), he's also hit on players like Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes, and perhaps Podkolzin. He's a good drafter, which is what he was brought in to do, and over the course of the last several years, Benning, has improved on other areas of his managing abilities. Yes, he's signed Eriksson, and that was a mistake looking back, but I believe he's trying to deal with that mistake. He hasn't been afraid to admit that he's made mistakes with certain acquisitions, that's better than a GM that doubles down, and refuses to admit their mistake.

I'm looking forward to this upcoming season. FINALLY, it feels like we may be on an upswing, and not wasting the fruitful and productive years of Brock, Bo, Petey and Hughes. That's our core moving forward, maybe Podkolzin when he eventually gets here.

Jim's deserved this extension. I don't know how long his new extension is (2 years was the rumor?), but we'll see after that whether he gets a longer leash, or not. But this is a vote of confidence by the owners for sure. This is good news as well, because organizations need stability. Changing GM's every couple of years is a recipe for disaster.

At least we're not Edmonton :P

    '

Agree with everything except I do think JV has improved every year and will continue to do so and be a top 6 winger someday when all  is said and done and with OJ hip fixed I can't wait to see what his potential is again

Jb -  so i got an extension

i guess i didnt need to trade a first round pick then to save my job

    my bad.  Oops

In Hindsight it seems like maybe JB knew he was getting an extension only a matter of dotting " ï  " etc. when he Traded away next years or the year afters first along with taking a the tenth pick that he might have no control over for the next 2 years . Not that good looking for a new job resume if you knew you were leaving . That was my first thought when I heard the trade . Liking it a lot more now after hearing he will be staying  and I have heard more about both JT Miller and Podkolzin

  9. He's still on the Canucks "CAP" Payroll so to me he might be retired from Florida But not Vancouver . Ask me again when we are not still paying Cap for him .  Then I will probably say  yeah throw in Mclean as well

  10. OJ is still young really and I am hoping he takes the next steps and can become top 4 . I expect the Canucks will start him in Utica unless he has an unbelievable training camp . He needs minutes so I hope he plays top 4 with pp and pk time on the farm . if they only expect a 5-6 dman I think he will be called up sooner than if they are grooming him to be a top 4 in Vancouver . I certainly  wouldn't be surprised if he stays on the farm most of the year  unless of course injuries .

  11. the plan as best as I can remember it from when JB and TL first took over was to not have what happened to Edmonton . Where the youngest players ran the team and there was Not nearly enough good older veteran leadership . I do recall statements of we do not want to lose too many games 7-2 8-1 and create a losing atmosphere . thus the filling the team with older traded for players instead of bringing up too many drafted rookies . Some things that have sent that sideways  I think where the 100 point season under WD . How good JV and Jared McCann Played at the beginning of their rookie seasons . Having to give long contracts  to get free agents to play here [ prior to this year ] . LE not being the winger for the sedins  . OH Yeah and Tortorella who Did Not want to be here and wanted a Tear down immediately not after the sedins left . Which is when Linden finally used the words rebuild than got fired . JB saying that there goal was to make the playoffs every year  was more to " Put Bums in seats " during the season .

In saying this you are saying you don't acknowledge players under contract are entitled to their salary when injured. It is up to the player to decide if they want to retire and terminate their contract. But until then, they are considered roster players and fall under the same rules as any player regardless of severity of injury.

I Never said anywhere that the Players shouldn't get the money they signed for or that they have to retire . Just that they have to stay with the team that they were on

  13. I have thought along these line for a long time as well . It would be very hard to implement  . Some teams would be immediately way over the cap . Might cause worse kaos  than when they first brought the cap in . I am sure there are a ton of other things that would have to be done as well . the High taxed american teams would jump all over this as well . Not really sure the reasoning why it was not changed when the cap was brought in , equalization payments could be used to offset the weaker teams better if the claim is to help with  team stability

That player yes being cap relieve still is an NHL asset. If the NHL wants to remove these players from the NHL CBA then they will have to get approval of both the NHPLA and Owners. I am guessing the players still want to be payed their full salaries and not just the part that is insured and I am guessing that the small market teams will want to be able to get rid of those that can not be insured. And the small market teams that want to get to the floor will want to be able to acquired those contracts that are insured. It seems to me it is a win win win situation and not coming off the books any time soon.

Just because things are legal does Not always make it good or fair . So I believe weather or not the board of governors decide it is in there best interest that still doesn't make it right . the argument is not weather it is legal but is it the right thing to do ? guess we will always see if from opposite sides of the lawyers desk
