  1. Yes, it is a bit perplexing. My analysis of her work to date is that she is very well-informed, cautious and recognizes that across the board lockdowns are not permanent solutions and do massive indirect damage. Last week they shutdown night clubs to stop the spread. That tells me they are trying to target carefully. The gov't in BC I think is handling things very competently. I think there are multiple reasons why people are dumping on her and gov't. One being that they watch too much US TV where the media has tied any kind of opening or loosening to Trump. There are few fans of Fox news on this site and we all know what Fox thinks of lockdowns. They see that and then get distressed when BC does some easing of measures.
  2. why do you think the numbers have jumped?
  3. Perhaps, definitely not the case here in Asia - high school here is quite different. Kids don't go out partying. But then you would look at the data in Euro and again the school data doesn't suggest major transmission at the high school level. My friend his son has started uni in Prague face to face. They are like BC at the moment with numbers rising but he is still at uni. I get your point. The difference between senior high school and uni in terms of social activities can be quite similar. It was for me.
  4. Can you provide the site where you got this 1000% number from? Or is it your math?
  5. Yes, not universities. Last week they had the Minister of Education on TV here talking about uni's. What he said is that the issue with uni's is the 19 plus year olds have social lives that involve activities and places that are the chief spreaders. Working part-time in a bar, drinking with friends and so forth. Of course it is spreading amongst them now because of the lock down in the spring.
  6. Was there in the summer. Weekly flights from Tokyo.
  7. The stats and evidence around the world don't support your fear mongering. it is that simple.
  8. It depends where you look. I looked at reported data last week from infections in Georgia and Texas which are two states that have reported high infections population wide. Again what I saw was a person here or there. I did see one case of 33 in Georgia but it applied to a whole district and involved employees. One of the largest groups from this group of 33 were janitors. My guess is they were required to test. I have seen probably like many the stories of some universities in the States. Dorm life and gatherings (partying) are two major causes. Universities here are officially online but professors can offer face to face if they choose. Students can opt out though. At my university students have been taking classes since mid July. In this period and until about 2 weeks ago we were kind of like BC and most of the world now - our infection cases exploded.
  9. Schools in Asia have been running since mid May. In Japan you are talking about 18 million kids from primary to high school. They have the one student or teacher here or there, but even that is trivial. There has yet to be any break out at any school here. No clusters - 4 plus months now. My daughter went on a camping trip two weeks ago with her class - that is how normal things are now. The big picture about school opening around the world is clear as day. Schools are not transmitters. The stats and evidence do not support the panic crowd on this site.
  10. Wow - fair and well thought out. Want to buy a bridge
  11. Messed up. Trump is a clear outlier. A neo-liberal with fascist qualities. The vote for him was ironically anti-neoliberal in my view - anti-global. That is why Sanders probably could have beat him as many have suggested and polling did as well - I don't know. The left and right are both neo-liberal just that the right disguises it better under the guise of religion and 'american values'. The left definitely like to use the courts. I think if this had happened say under Obama and Bush that their responses would have been pretty much the same. A moderate sustained lockdown more similar to Canada then say countries like Spain or France.
  12. you don't know what I am talking about. the person I directed it to does.
  13. Some think it does though - not saying you are wrong. Peter Hitchens a well known and respected conservative in UK has argued over the past few months that the media and gov't actions have been inconsistent with western values and democracy. At minimum he points to a lack of debate on the taking away of freedoms. And the lack of consent seeking. Parliament was not used in Canada or the UK to debate positions or policy at the outset.. Another similar voice in the UK is retired Supreme Court judge Sumption. Of course both men see the Covid gov't reaction as an example of the way governing is changing in the west. Pre-Covid, Sumption gave the Reith lectures for 2019. You can hear them on YouTube. They are quite interesting. One important point he makes is that we need to move away from the using of the law to drive policy and return back to politics. Seems fanciful at the moment. I use the UK examples because the debate there has been less toxic and political.
  14. China was the first country to use a hard lock down. Critics contend that this set a precedent that many western countries were all too eager to copy. Have you read Polyani? One of his biggest concerns is that the liberal project ( and now neoliberal) could only be sustained by authoritarianism and even fascism. The freedom of the masses would be restricted in favor of freedom of the few - it is a derogatory comment and nothing more.. When someone says communism in the west they are referring more to the elites with a leftist progressive agenda using it to advance their own interests. You see for example numerous gov't officials in the UK who were behind the hard lock down but then did not apply it to themselves. Same in NZ as well. So I think the OP is not literally talking about communism. It is a little more nuanced and complicated than that. He/she thinks we are in one party rule in the west and academics like Polyani would not disagree with this basic point - good freedoms have been traded for bad freedoms - this has been happening long before COVID.
  15. you would contact deb and ask her to ban me - yeah I know how you work.
  16. you use it to safely troll people.
  17. The first country to use a hard lockdown was China. I am sure you can figure the rest out.
  18. All the 'confused' emoji and comments come from a small group that protect this echo chamber which is backed by the moderator. Most of their 'information' comes from each other or main stream media. With the current rise in infections they have moved from fear to anger directed at 'selfish', 'dumb', 'cowardly' people. Part of this anger will be warning you that you are next to catch it or blaming you for deaths. They actually remind me of the people they regularly mock (Trump supporters).
  19. The poster is mocking people who believe in the Covid Hoax. You know that right? I wouldn't even classify it as garbage can humor. Just dumb.
