  1. I agree with this. Subban is playing poorly but he's also no longer fit for this type of role despite what his contract would seem to dictate. He's still PKing for 1:30 per night, and he shouldn't be anywhere near a penalty kill at this point. Playing for a contract, on a better team, one-last shot type of thing. Canucks desperately need a 2nd power play unit as well. I'd be happy with a Roussel or Beagle and Eriksson straight across if that was on the table too. PK Subban is being overplayed, whereas Eriksson isn't even playing. and yes, defensemen like Weber aren't exactly extractable
  2. For sure if there's any inkling that Eriksson will GTOF this deal makes no sense But like others and yourself have mentioned, Subban in a contract year, in a different environment, sheltered TOI, would likely be more useful than Eriksson + one of Roussel or Beagle or even Virt at this point. Gives the Canucks a bit more flexibility contract and roster spot wise too. The deal might not have the exact right players in it but I feel like something in this realm could benefit both teams.
  3. To Vancouver: PK Subban To NJ: Loui Eriksson after his signing bonus is paid; Jake Virtanen; Roussel or Beagle at 50% off; a 3rd round pick Why? Total real dollar amount going to NJ: 1 + 3.4 + 1.5 = 5.9 Total real dollar amount coming to Vancouver = 8 Total cap hit going to NJ: 6 + 2.55 + 1.5 = 11 Total cap hit going to Vancouver: 9 Eriksson's cap hit is much larger than his dollar amount this coming year, which might make him moveable with the right deal. NJ and NJ fans do not want Subban on the team - and for fair reason, he's making 8 million a year and he's playing like a bottom pairing PP specialist... which ... is what the Canucks could play him as. Right now the Canucks have Eriksson doing nothing. Subban is RHed, gritty, big defenseman. He's been bad in NJ but still has a lot of tools... I know he's too old to likely bounceback completely, but maybe one sheltered year is possible - for example keeping him AWAY from the penalty kill. He's still at about a .5 PPG pace these days, and could give the 2nd PP unit some fire power. General analysis says NJ is trying to cute costs, even moving Kulikov's minor 1.15M pro-rated salary at the deadline (plus vets Zajac and Palmieri). Their owner is a billionaire who people think doesn't care much about hockey. This deal saves their owner 2.1 million next year and Jake COULD still turn it around. Neither Jake or PK are going to turn it around in their current environments. This NJ blog covers people general sentiment around Subban in NJ, but this quote sums it up pretty good: And: This deal keeps NJ above cap floor while saving them real dollars is a key point. Notably all these players contracts run out next year, so it's a 1-year trial for all. Not a lot of commitment on either side. This deal gives the Canucks some additional cap to re-structure their bottom-6. I used to keep a habit of keeping up with all new CBA and contract rules, but with COVID I have been thrown for a loop and a bit out of date. Open to critique around cap things I may have missed.
  4. I'd be somewhat neutral on Jake for Jake versus a Jake buyout. At 3.6 Debrusk is definitely overpaid but I also think part of the reason he's struggling so much more this year is with the way Boston's line-up is worked out, as he's playing on his off-wing. Like Virtanen, he's already a bit sketchy in the D-zone, so this has made it even harder. In his coach's words: Going from stretches of playing on your strong wing with Krejci ... to this... isn't ideal for your point total. I like Virt more than most here, but there's no argument that this year has been terrible for him. Even if it's risky to give him up, it's probably better for both player and team than doing nothing.. the status quo isn't good. DeBrusk is at least pretty consistent in his offensive zone puck battles. With Miller playing centre, there is a possibility that DeBrusk could be given a shot on Miller, Horvat, Petey's or Sutter's LW to start next year. If Green and Benning are thinking that there's a top-9 LW spot up for grabs I could see this being worth a shot. I think Boston might dance if Canucks ate a little extra cap so they can re-sign either Ritchie or Hall or both. Virtanen already lowers their total cap hit, but I could see Virt + 20-30 percent retained for DeBrusk full price being inticing for the Boston Bruins. They would possibly even expose Virt to the Kracken Just my take

i hate calgary, but dont we want them to win if we have any chance at making playoffs, which i seriously doubt we do anyways.

Would love it if Jacob shut them down, so Habs lose a few to Cowtown.

  6. lol true. Sheary wouldn't be playing so hard if uhhh Benning uhh you know
  7. been watching Sheary a lot this year and he's the type of winger you'd love to have. Drives to the net way bigger than he appears, wins most puck battles, and can produce offense. IMO this contract is a steal
  8. Both have reasons to take discount contracts so we'll see. Hamonic wants to stay in western Canada cuz of some family stuff in Manitoba and Edler has played here his whole career plus played major junior in BC; he purposely signed a two-year contract to be a ED protected in a different way. Both are also nearing retirement. Good that Benning gave himself some flexibility in who he exposes with all that in mind.
  9. A 5th vs a 4th in this COVID year hardly make a difference. This is a low stakes gamble on a player who has shown flashes and is in the mold that the Canucks could use- righthanded/right sided, 6'2/205 pounds, decent offensive #s. He has an extremely cheap year remaining on his contract and also gives Benning some flexibility around the expansion draft. Really not a loss
  10. Really wanted Benning to sign Bowey last off-season. At 700k this is a great low risk gamble, depth pick-up IMO. Right-handed, 6'2/205 points, 17 points in 53 games last year, former 2nd round pick, Kelowna Rockets alumni, former teammate of Holtby, Beagle, developed under Barry Trotz.
  11. with Highmore & Bowey Benning also gave himself more options re: the expansion draft as both have another year on their terms.
  12. Seems like a fair hockey deal. FLA gets a good playoff performer which watching this year is something that will definitely benefit them.
  13. lol he was a healthy scratch for a # of games against Minne & STL, he produced precisely 0 points in the 10 games he did play, had 4 whole shots on net, contributed little defensively, could rarely be trusted for 10+ mins a night, a whopping 2 takeaways. 18 hits... but where any actually noticeable? anyway, between that stat line and watching him play is what I would base my statement that no playoff team would want this guy in their top 6.
  14. Sorry If Gaudette is in your top 6 you'll never make it out the first round of the playoffs**
  15. Highmore plays a diff role. He's a winger, he's gritty, he brought something to his team in the playoffs, he overcame being passed over the draft due to his size to show that he could bring it at the pro levels and was a great AHL rookie. Has another year a 725k so he could be a cheap bottom sixer on a team which has a lot of money skewed to the bottom. Low risk decent reward. Plus, Gaudette not taking up any more ice team. Pce out Gauddy
  16. we don't need to be covid truthers to have observed Gaudette being a defensive liability with no grit and a terrible playoffs and start to this season looks more and more like his 33 points was a one-off
  17. i don't agree with critiques of the trade today but i agree with this assessment. Should've sold Gaudette while his value was running high. It's not like he'd help a team in a playoff run lol.
  18. Guys remember that Gaudette sucks and his flash-in-the-pan decent point total last year isn't gonna fool professional GMs and scouts. Dude's soft and is terribly defensively Highmore seems like another potential Motte/Hawryluk. Benning's fav lol. Not a huge improvement but IMO better than nothing, plus has another year at 725k so v. cheap bottom six player like y'all wished for
  19. Yepp. Wouldn't shock me if Gaudreau was moved this off-season, esp with the Sutter takeover behind the bench. Could see a different Flames next year IMO.
  20. As much as I like Benn, moving him seems like a win-win. A contender gets a solid depth guy and then Juolevi gets some TOI- and the Canucks presumably get a late draft pick.
