So it sounds like they'd be looking for things Vancouver probably can't/won't offer. Dam, I was thinking he'd be just about a perfect fit for Van's 3C spot. Thanks for the response though.

In general I think Montreal and Vancouver are bad trading partners right now. They’re both rebuilding and have similar holes in the lineup. Vancouver has a couple young pieces in a Hughes and  Pettersson  that really stand out. Montreal doesn’t have those superstars as of yet but they have far better prospect depth

@qwijibo what are the chances Montreal would be open to trading Dvorak? What would the acquisition cost look like?

He’s certainly not on the list of untouchables. That said it would need to be a deal that makes sense for Montreal. They don’t have cap issues atm so you can’t view him as a player they’re looking to dump.  He’s probably their best faceoff guy and hes reliable defensively. He actually fits well as their 3C.

That said with the acquisition of Newhook and the possibility of Beck pushing for a spot they may be willing to move him.  Montreal has a ton of NHL ready wingers and left shot d so I think they’d be looking for a decent right shot D prospect (unlikely) or a couple draft picks. I’m thinking a couple 2nds or a 2nd and a 3rd would get it done.

Cap space for three, now four years is why players are not moving like the n the past.

    Blame Bettman for that.

More teams are playing elc players and others getting less money, only ones still making big money are the odds ufa or players they have any to keep, plus stars .

Blame COVID. Bettman and the players union managed to keep hockey going and even extended the CBA to avoid a work stoppage.

Possibly but there's no doubt in my mind they hope he can be a center. My memory is foggy but wasn't that the hope when the Habs traded for Drouin?

Different  situation entirely. At the time Montreal had very few options at C. The Droiun fiasco was largely motivated by Bergevin giving into a small but vocal group of media and politicians who wanted more homegrown Francophones.  It was a mistake the moment it happened.

The fact that Newhook CAN play centre certainly doesn’t hurt

Look at Garlands numbers compared to PLD .

Garland IS NOT over paid for his numbers.

People have to realize his contract is good and to replace him unless it's on elc would cost the same if not more.

Regardless.  He adds no value to Montreal when they have guys who can do the same job on an ELC.  Montreal isn’t moving the 5th OA for that package.

As the resident Montreal guy would you do Rathbone, Garland, and the 11OA for the 5OA?

Not a chance in hell. Garland is overpaid for what he brings and Montreal has several nhl ready guys who saw action last season thst could be pencilled in to where he would play for a fraction of the cost.  Montreal also has a bunch of far more proven young defencemen in the system with more coming. Rathbone adds no value. So essentially it’s 5th OA for 11 OA.

Montreal May drop back 2-3 spots max, and if they do the return is rumoured to be far better than that

Glad that you are weighing in on this topic. Your knowledge of the Habs has always been pretty reliable. Good to see your measured take, rather than the usual “Wtf is Bergevin still running the show in MTL” that we see in these parts. :)

Hughes has done a great job in Montreal far and it’s been reported for a couple months now that he was looking to make another deal in the same vein as last summers Dach trade.

It was pretty much a forgone conclusion he wasn’t going to get into a bidding war for Dubois so anyone surprised by this move doesn’t follow Montreal very closely.

He gave up more fur Dach but there were also higher expectations on him. Time will tell how this ends up looking but Hughes is making moves to improve the term with a similar aged core that can mature together

I see that but chances can turn around and bite you.

Giving up picks in this draft you better be sure and to me in 5 years the picks should be better then what they got.

We’re talking 31 and 37. Not top 10. Odds that the guys they would have drafted in those spots even make the team at some point are pretty low

    What is Montreal doing?

Same thing they did with Dach. Taking a chdnce on a young pjs yet who hasn’t met expectations yet.  They have a lot of prospects and draft capital and are utilizing it to get guys who fit with their core.  They now have Dach, Caufiejd abd Newhook from the 1st round of the 2019 draft

Anybody willing to do this? Not sure MTL does though.

    MTL trades:

    5th overall

    Radek Dvorak

    Arber Xhekaj

    VAN trades:

    11th overall

    2024 1st round pick

    2025 2nd round pick

    Connor Garland

    Jack Rathbone

On our end is it overpayment to move up 6 spots?

MTL ditches Dvorak’s contract now that he’s a 4th line C. We get an ideal RD in Wifi whom MTL would obviously be reluctant to give up.

But, It addresses need and gets us into another potential franchise C drafting territory. Or, we turn around and trade that #5 tomorrow.

    Montréal definitely doesn’t do it
