This is the kind of outside of the box thinking that is reserved for only the most successful NHL execs! Are you sure your initials aren’t DW from SJ?

They've lost Zaitsev and Gardiner and gained 1 year of Barrie
They've lost Kadri and gained Kerfoot with Marner still not signed yet.
It doesn't seem that much better. and if Barrie leaves next summer, it seems like their D overall is worse and the Tavares-Matthews-Nylander-Marner quadrafecta is still stupid expensive
Stop using logic right now. You’ll ruin the narrative.

The team as it is now constituted is perfectly represented by this tune! Hell yes!!

Rosters get built on more than pure performance, contract status and type of role required also matters. It is also very arguable that Eriksson merits being on the tram based on his performance.
Gagner wasn’t the worst performer on the team, he just didn’t fit the role on the bottom half they were trying to build. We have plenty of “defensive players”, Sutter and Beagle beat him for a spot simply by virtue of being able to play centre. If they want energy guys or toughness in that roster spot, LE doesn’t fit.
You also don’t get to pretend that each training camp is a fresh slate where you forget what happened in previous years. Three years of poor performance and they don’t owe him any more fresh starts, they don’t even need to bring him to training camp.
It won’t reflect badly on the organization at all. The media and ex-player pundits ripped Eriksson for speaking out when his play and effort was so poor. Same again when he had his agent ask publicly for a trade. He always gets listed as one of the worst value contracts in the league.
The team has all the moral authority in the world to not have him as part of the roster going forward.
All good points. I still believe the possible divorce from this player needs to be handled with a deft touch and without vitriol or public pronouncements. The fever pitch already established in these forums and in the media are not going to help a smooth "transition" but I suppose in the end it's not going to matter what I think.

The Right Time Hoodoo Gurus
Relentless riff and energy and admittedly obscure Australian rock but extreme kick ass. Trust me. Lyrics work quite well too.

Is it just me or does it look like my little brother has borrowed my Jersey and pulled down on the sleeves and bottom in order to stay warm while watching cartoons? Probably just me.

To the general consensus that LE should and will be sent to the minors .... what can of worms is opened when he has a decent to strong training camp? What does a demotion say to the rest of rest of the team about merit based promotion? Is it believed that he will automatically cave when he comes back in September? Despite the comments, despite the contract he is still easily a 4th line if not top 9 talent.
I don't see him "tanking".
If the team decides to somehow or someway undermine his ability to show that he still belongs on the 23 man roster what an ugly path to take. What a horrible organizational precident.
The public dissection of his performance over the last three years is fair game. I understand the visceral hatred. I just think how this challenge is dealt with will reflect the type of franchise we have here in Vancouver.

Does the name Alex Burrows ring a bell? 4 years 2M$, for a first liner...not bad
Thomas Vanek, 1 year, 2M$, 41pts in 61 games.
Those are the two examples that quickly came to mind, pretty sure there are more. Enough with the conspiracies...
To be fair, Burrows had no track record as a first line winger when he signed that 4x2. I seem to remember him being upped in the spring after having played with the Sedins for only a couple of months. He had emerged as a solid third liner yes, but hardly a player with any pedigree or track record playing top line minutes. For a recent ECHLer that 8 million had to be a life changer. Don't think there was anything nefarious going on when he signed that contract.

There's risk associated with it sure, but there's always risk in life. I'm sure him and his agent are well aware of the possibilities. He could have got more but didn't, I guess we'll have to see how things play out?
I think the reaction you read on these pages is borne from a belief that something underhanded is afoot. To what degree this hometown "discount" can be attributed to the player freely relinquishing leverage is the question.
These guys all have best before dates. The clock is always running and the inherent risk to their livelyhood is ever present. I understand the calculation of risk for the player but this move is weighed so heavily in the Sharks favour that suspicions have and will continue to rise.

He must really like the San Jose organization and Cali itself, that's a steal. Gives them flexibility for a year. He's betting on himself.
That might be true but is he also betting that nobody is going to run him head first into the end boards or that a puck doesn't deflect up into his eye leaving him legally blind or that a skate severs a tendon in his calf or he gets hit by a bolt of lightening. That is not the wisest of bets in my opinion, with all due respect.

This signing makes complete sense if you understand the CBA, arbitration and the classifications of the different groups of free agency.
I could explain it to you guys if enough people want to know.
But a lot of you guys also want to be jerks it's up to you guys post if you want to know
Actually ... was hoping for enlightenment Arrow. What seems like mysterious circumstances may indeed have a rational explanation and if you have insight perhaps you can help me out. Otherwise, this whole thing has an epic stench to it.

Damn, Barzal at 64th.
Head scratcher. When pooling I love grabbing guys like Barzal off a down second year moving into a foundational third. Too much raw talent there. On the other hand, and completely shocking in my mind, Laine at 29!! Looking at that list, if he makes the top 80 I’ll be surprised. Other than a fine trigger I don’t see enough play making ability in him that would translate into enough helpers to warrant him a spot in the top 30. Like all of these, this list is speculative and subjective but it is nice to see some Canucks being recognized rather than marginalized.

I appreciate the idea that this player is betting on himself but who or what convinced him to take such a roll of the dice with his future? One stay elbow, one knee to knee hit, one bolt of lightening and his career could be over. He doesn’t have all the leverage he might have next year but, wholly cow, what spell does Doug Wilson have on him to make him to agree to this contract? One mil is appropriate for a 4th line journeyman. What’s with the gift wrapping?

Yeah your right. Health comes first for sure! Love Baer! He has improved his game and was looking like a consistent 50 point player. Hopefully he can recover like Crosby. Remember when everyone said Crosby was done and was worried for his health?
Being reminded of Crosby gives me some hope. He’s been able to flourish without materially changing his game over a fairly lengthy period. Why not Baer!

129 games missed games since the start of the 2015/2016 campaign. if Baertschi was healthy last season, 55+ points wouldn't have been out of the equation.
One more nasty concussion, and I don't think they'll let him play anymore. Poor guy turns 27 this October. I really hope he can manage to stay healthy next season.
The thought of him taking one more hard shot, whether body or head, and lying prone on the ice is haunting me. I don't doubt that he is receiving the best medical advice available but it seems someone with his history is taking an extraordinary risk. He's a father now, a responsibility I'm sure he takes seriously, and I assume he plans to have more children and grow a family with his lovely wife. Can't imagine the conflicted feelings he might experience if he was forced to walk away from the game before he was ready but I know it would be a courageous thing to do.

I hear you... but it's all good!! 85% of CDC seem to love Biega!! He'll fill in just fine every 5 games....
What's not to love! Using your math I wonder if the the 15% can't see him busting his ass on every shift as if it was going to be his last! He may be limited and exposed when he's given too much ice time but I'm proud to say, as a man, that I love him!!!

I get your point. He may be forced into top 4 with the Canucks.... but he has been shown to struggle against high end talent...... He would do better on the 3rd pairing.
I do agree that our top 4 is pretty week.... Edler, Tanev, Hughes and Stetcher is what i would go with... TBH. but of course more depth is good and Myers can fill in as needed......
I don't say its a terrible signing for the next 2 years... We may not need him in the lineup in 2-3 years time though if things go as planned with our up can coming younger D men.
The primary point of this signing is year 1 and getting Jim B his contract extension....
I understand your cynicism to a point but in the end I just don’t think JB has a move like this in him. It just seems counter to the type of man he is - simple, earnest and hard working. He’s just not this calculated (and this would be my main criticism of him if and when I feel it’s time to be critical).

I think Lee is probably why Montreal has been dumping cap such as shaw. I think he is gone.
But some guys such as ferland may find themselves without teams later in the day tomorrow and maybe they drop their asking prices. The top guys such as lee probably all get picked up but maybe that gives us a chance with a ferland type.
Sign me up for a Ferland type except not with the price tag. The best way to enjoy this type of player is to draft and develop him. Then watch him truculate all over the ice for 3 years at entry level money!!

There we go -- added a top-6 forward and turned over HALF the defence. Mission accomplished, and the summer has just started.
I know the popular narrative paints Canucks D as woefully incompetant but if you look at GAA they finished 20th in the league. Was Markstrom that good. Why did he not receive any MVP votes playing behind such a heinous backline? I'm certainly not suggesting we had a stellar group but Satiar, among many others, is suggesting an all out crap show on defense. Is there a collective need to be hyper ctitical of the home team regardless of facts. Just wondering.

[Signing] Rangers sign Kaapo Kakko

Yes.(for all the oldtimers out there) I think they'd be delighted with a haul that included Raymond Burr, Harold Ballard and Brooks Robinson.
