Considering that Etem's contract is up at the end of the year and for this season, he would likely displace a career AHLer as opposed to a prospect. That last sentence is irrelevant.

Yea sorry, just tried to get the Guillaume Brisebois thread back to discussing Guillaume Brisebois instead of discussing whether or not Etem should be a Comet or not.

Always fun to see Canuck prospects in the WJC.

You really don't understand what I'm talking about eh? Because Anaheim put Etem back on waivers we could have claimed him back uncontested and would have been able to send him directly to Utica to help the Utica Comets. Everyone talks about how important it is to surround prospects with a winning environment. How is Utica any different? Etem was a free, no strings attached addition to our overall organizational strength.

"sometimes a chapter comes to an end" That's a huge cop out. Etem would have been great depth and a nice piece to make Utica more competitive.

I'm not saying I expected a future for him in Vancouver, specifically because he wouldn't have been playing in Vancouver.

So we should just keep recycling old players that we know haven't worked out in the past instead of giving a chance to new faces or other prospects? I was all for Etem going down to Utica, and you are both right, he would have been good depth. At what point do you just move on to a new project? I'd say a good time would be when another team claims the player. There is one open contract space available for a player that could potentially make an impact. Etem just had a kid, he get's to move back to cali, maybe the Canucks felt like moving on and allowing Etem to do the same?

Screw having Brisebois in the AHL next season. Let's sign Stanton and trade for Corrado.

Etem was then put on waivers by the Ducks and not claimed. If we claimed him, we could have sent him directly to Utica.

Sometimes a chapter comes to an end and you move on to the next one. Etem was done in Vancouver when Anaheim claimed him.

You want the Canucks to claim Corrado if the Leafs decide to actually do something with him?

Etem, McCann, Forsling would all help Utica a lot right now. But nothing is ever JB's fault.

Not happening, they are too afraid of the movement.

    #protecttheheels

    #labamba2016

Etem was claimed on waivers on his way down to Utica.

McCann was traded, would have been on the Canucks roster if he wasn't

Forsling is in the NHL right now. Traded for a player that was closer to NHL ready, who is currently playing in the NHL as well.

How exactly are they even relevant to your argument?

Megna and Chaput could all help Utica a lot right now, but they are too busy filling in for injuries

Utica was in the finals like 2 seasons ago and AHL teams usually swing up and down way more than NHL teams do

  5. The kid is fantastic. I really hope he turns into something significant. Love the way he plays with high energy, pace, skill and tenacity. He's hungry on the puck and has a great forecheck.

Shout out to the USHL/NCAA scouting department.

Tanev, Baer and a 2nd for Trouba.....  Doubt it would get the deal done, but worth a kick at the tires.

    Jesus christ no.

That package to gain 4 years in age on a player that may never be as good as Tanev?

Boeser wins NCHC Player of the Month.

    Quote

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota sophomore forward Brock Boeser has been named National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) Player of the Month for October after leading the conference in points during the season’s opening month.

Boeser racked up a league-leading 12 points in seven games while also leading the NCHC in points per game (1.71) and tying for the league lead in goals (6) and assists (6). The Burnsville, Minn., native, was named NCHC Offensive Player of the Week two out of the four weeks and was named the game’s No. 1 star four times.

Boeser opened the season with a 4-point game (1g, 3a) in a 6-0 win over Canisius (Oct. 7) and was a plus-4 in that game. He added two assists the following night in the series finale, including a primary assist on Tucker Poolman’s game-winning goal, for a 5-point series.

After notching an assist in a 5-2 win over RPI (Oct. 15), Boeser erupted for five goals in a non-conference sweep of No. 18 Bemidji State (Oct. 21-22). He scored all three goals in UND’s 3-2 win in the series opener, rallying the Fighting Hawks from a 2-0 deficit and becoming UND’s first player with a natural hat trick since Ryan Duncan in the 2008 NCAA regionals. The game-winner came on a third-period penalty shot. The following night, Boeser added two more goals and was a plus-3 in a 5-4 victory over the Beavers.

Five of Boeser’s six goals during the month came at even strength and he tied for fifth in the NCHC with a plus-5 rating. Primarily a right winger, Boeser also took 41 faceoffs in October and won 56.1 percent of them to rank among the top 10 in the NCHC. He helped lead UND to a 5-2-0 overall record and the top spot in the national polls until the final day of the month.

It is the fourth monthly NCHC honor of Boeser’s career. The Vancouver Canucks’ 2015 first-round pick was named both NCHC Player and Rookie of the Month last March/April and was also NCHC Co-Player of the Month in January. Boeser is now a candidate for Hockey Commissioners’ Association (HCA) National Player of the Month for October, which will be announced on Wednesday.

Denver freshman forward Henrik Borgström was named NCHC Rookie of the Month for October.

Boeser and the Fighting Hawks travel to Minneapolis this weekend for a non-conference series with the 13th-ranked Golden Gophers on Friday and Saturday at Mariucci Arena.

The thing that bugs me the most about Stecher's reassignment the more I think about it is this: management often talks about trying to balance two different goals - to develop young players and to win. Stecher does both of these. He's easily our fifth best defenseman (since Edler, Tanev, Hutton, and Gudbranson are lineup locks) if not higher than that. Based on merit he should be on our team, and I think Willie and JB both know that since he was called up and plugged in right away over Tryamkin and Biega. Do they really think Sbisa or Larsen are better options to play defense for us?

If neither Sbisa or Larsen figure into the team's long term plans (and they shouldn't) then there's no point in playing them every game, unless having them in the lineup gives you the best chance of winning every night (and it doesn't). Its the same thing with how they played Bartkowski in 80 games last year even though Benning knew he wasn't going to re-sign him, and they weren't making the playoffs.

The AHL time won't hurt Stecher at all because its still valuable playing time. But Willie was willing to give him 22 minutes a night in the NHL right out of the gate, so if he's earned that already based on his play then I think that says a lot about who gives you the best chance to win each night. Especially with such a condensed schedule, it makes even more sense to sit Sbisa and Larsen, occasionally at the very least.

    Bravo. +1

He looks amazing.  Skates like Karlsson thinks the game like Lidstrom and just turned 17 years old 14 months playing against men potting almost 40 points in his first season, most of which as a 16 year old.

Ya...him and Juolevi on our blue line makes me salivate.

I have no idea where you are getting your stats from but that is way off if you are talking about Liljegren.

    Timothy Liljegren career totals:

Doesn't take away form the fact that I believe he has got the highest ceiling going into the 2017 draft.

It's true that he has spent time playing for the mens team but it wasn't throughout a full season he split time with multiple teams. He had a really busy year, so much so that he had to turn down the mens team offer of playing him after an international tournament because he felt he was "burned out". He played an insane amount of games in his 16 year old season for the U-18s, U-20s, mens, and in international tournaments for both the u-17 and u-18 squads. The team praised him for his honesty and maturity for recognising that he needed a chance to rest. All that traveling, all those different teams, coaches, places, and busy schedule would be tough for a 16 year old.

I have him ranked as the best prospect for the 2017 draft. It's quite tough to get an NHL player comparison because I don't know any defender who jumps into the play quite like Liljegren. Perhaps a mix of Drew Doughty and Tj Brodie would be my comparison.

Having both him and Juolevi would be a dream.

he was a defensive liability in the world juniors last year and it cost the americans a chance at gold.

I think hes a couple of years away, then hes bordering on free agency which doesn't bode well for Vancouver as his team is the wild, and he was clearly disappointed at the draft

konecnys cousin horvat sure could use him as there RW.

  11. He could have had 2 assists if Tyson Jost would just put it in the back of the net on some great chances. Brock hit the post as well.. this kid man. Maybe I'm reading into it too much but in his post interview, it was the first time I saw his personality come out a little more than it has in the past. Seems like he is growing into his own and maturing this year.

    Winnipeg definitely not lol.

I don't think teams will be gunning for a rental goalie at the deadline, especially how Miller in St.Louis went.

Maybe get a 2nd rounder for him, and that's it.

A wrongly timed injury could open it up for Miller.

  13. I think the Canucks made the smart choice this time.

Let's not get away from the fact that Vancouver has got a very good prospect in Stecher. The depth on d moving forwards is very exciting.

I think the best place for him is the AHL this year. His preseason has been great and it has shown how he is capable of playing. However, coming out of college, where they play less games in a year, I think I year on the road in the AHL as opposed to the NHL would be better for him. The biggest thing he would gain would be adapting to the travel and professionalism of the sport, while getting lots of ice time. He deserved every game he played in, but he still has to learn the off ice components to make the jump effectively to the NHL.

It would also make our numbers game easier for our roster. I think we have yet to see the best from Larsen and he would do better with some more time to adjust. I'm not sure about this, but I believe we can send down Pedan without waivers. I think he would be more useful to Utica as they already have Stetcher, Subban and Nilsson on the right side, making Biega a bit redundant. I also think Biega has a chance of being claimed as he is a cheap, right handed, depth defenseman.

    Edler - Tanev

    Hutton - Gudbranson

    Sbisa - Larsen

    Tryamkin, Biega

    -------------------------

    Pedan

    Stetcher

    Subban

    Nilsson

That's a solid group to work with for the upcoming season.

    Couldn't agree more.

I think Stecher could play in the NHL this year but you also need to consider the long-term. Pedan is waiver eligible so there is a risk he is picked up if he's put on waivers but I think that is a decision management will be forced to make. I doubt he get's picked up. I think management will send Stecher to Utica with a lot of praise and the experience of playing against NHL calibre opposition that will drive him to work harder down there.

Is this the deepest the defensive core has ever been for the Canucks? throughout the organization?

    Pros:

    Edler - Tanev

    Hutton - Gudbranson

    Sbisa - Larsen

    Tryamkin - Biega

    Pedan - Stecher
    Subban - Sautner

    Billins - Nilsson

    Cederholm - McEneny

    Junior:

    Juolevi - Brisebois

    Neill - Olson

    Candella - Stewart

  15. Gaunce looks highly determined this preseason and I would be more surprised if he starts in Utica than in Vancouver. Very encouraging to see from a guy I was starting to forget about with our new shiny toys.

It's promising to see that the organization have got quite a few players knocking on the door to make the NHL team. Makes me feel more comfortable about veterans moving on as their roles can likely be filled internally.
