  1. I'd like to see him play a year in Utica first (or at least some time in Utica)

If he were to come back, he won't come back to play in the AHL there is no reason for him to do that. He has already played in the AHL and why would he want to leave a perfectly suitable situation in Sweden in his hometown to play in Utica? It doesn't make sense for him or the Canucks, he's already paid his dues in the AHL. If he is coming back, he shows up for training camp and if he doesnt get an NHL job he is going back to Sweden, that's what I would do if I were him.

I don't expect him to come back to the Canucks but I wouldn't be surprised if he signs a deal with an NHL team later on in his career.

  2. Totally agree. Sundin really didn't bring much individually, but our forward core went on a tear after he was here.

28 points in 41 games during the regular season and 8 points in 8 playoff games. His play was pretty impressive. Only thing lacking was footspeed

I thought he brought a lot to the table.

  3. A former leading scorer at prep power Thayer Academy, Adam Gaudette brought his game to a whole new level in his draft year with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.

The Braintree, Mass. native really stood out at the Beantown Summer Classic and then again at the USHL Atlantic Challenge. He was active in the offensive zone, won a lot of battles for loose pucks and had a quick, hard release. Mark Carlson, his coach in Cedar Rapids, believes Gaudette will become even more of a threat once he bulks up.

"His upside is very high. Once he adds more muscle to his frame, he'll be able to get to the net more and win more puck battles," explained Carlson.

Gaudette, who finished the season with 13 goals and 17 assists in 50 USHL games for Mark Carlson's team, made a sharp climb from the midterm to final rankings. He was ranked 187 by NHL Central Scouting at the midterm before soaring to 108 in the final listing.

Perhaps most impressive was his +23 plus/minus, a remarkable number for a rookie in the USHL. Gaudette was a player that Carlson felt comfortable rolling out onto the ice in all situations.

"His +/- was exceptional. He was dependable. His hockey sense is very good at both ends of the rink," said Carlson, who also raved about his exceptional work ethic. "He just gets after it."

Gaudette was originally slated as a 2016-17 recruit for Northeastern, but with the recent departure of Mike Szmatula from the Huskies program, he could be brought in early. Gaudette is a good prospect who will likely be given the chance to grow in college hockey before signing a deal.

  4. This is taken from the website that was posted earlier by someone at: http://lastwordonsports.com/2015/05/18/2015-nhl-draft-profile-48-guillaume-brisebois/

    I'm not gonna say it's a steal but it's a steal.

Definitley an under the radar type of prospect.

I had no idea about him but am quite excited about this pick. A lot of potential there, could have been ranked/selected a lot higher if he was playing for a better team. He did get the call up to Canada, that says a lot about him if he plays for a horrific team like the Titan.

  5. Anyone looking at that (-) should know how terrible his team was. He was one of the few bright spots. Ill post some info here:

The Acadie-Bathurst Titan were abysmal this year. They ended dead last in the QMJHL standings and only won a mere 17 games. Be that as it may, a young defenseman by the name of Guillaume Brisebois has been one of the team’s few bright spots who grew leaps and bounds since last season.

A standard two-way defenseman, Brisebois was urged by his coaches to carry the puck up the ice more often this season and join the rush. He has a fluid skating strides and strong legs that allow him to break out of the defensive zone with ease. Down the ice, he possesses excellent vision and pinpoint breakout passes to his teammates. Brisebois has a great slapshot and wristshot. The only issue is he seems timid to use it, which will have to be an aspect of his game he needs to work on further.

Just looking at stats can be deceiving. This season Brisebois was a minus -40, but that’s a testament to how poorly the Titan were this year than it was about how bad Brisebois played in his own end. He’s responsible in the defensive zone and challenges opposing forwards as they enter the blueline. An effective pokechecker, the Quebec-native disrupts plays and cuts down passing lanes. He could stand to add some extra muscle and use his size to knock players off the puck, but Brisebois still has time. At this stage, he’s very raw in his hockey development and will likely stay in the QMJHL a full four years before developing further in the AHL. However, for my money, he’s still worth the gamble.

  6. I agree, he isn't going to make us a Stanley contender next year.

    What exactly is the rush?

    Detroit this boy.

    And preserve his ELC.

I wish that the Canucks will "detroit" all their prospects. Unless there are cases like Horvat that was clearly ready for a role in the NHL and proved that with is rookie season.

What is the rush to get these young guys into the team? When they are ready to take over roles, they are ready. Might as well just brew them in junior and the AHL before that.

An experienced 22 year old will likely enjoy earlier success than an unexperienced 18 year old.

  7. Would be surprised if either Virtanen or McCann get any game time for Utica this season.

I can't be the only one that see's Virtanen play atleast one season in the AHL before making the Canucks right? Feels like Jake would really benefit in the long-term from being developed properly and rounding out his game in Utica. We finally have a farm team with their biggest focus on developing NHL players for the Vancouver Canucks. Coaching staff down there are doing wonders with the youngsters, I can't wait to see how much Virtanen will develop under Travis Green.

  8. I'm not worried about points at all with Jake.

He's coming off a major surgery in the offseason, and we all have first hand experience (with Kesler as one example) with what the season after those types of surgeries can look like.

Just a general observation though, but from what little time I've seen him play in Calgary, I'm a bit concerned about not only his consistency, but his shift to shift intensity. Too many times I've seen him back away from mucking it up in the corners or sidewall to wait for the a pass or for the puck to come loose. I'm hoping that's simply coaching that's keeping him up high to protect the d-men, similar to his team Canada role. If not, he needs to up the intensity and get more involved shift to shift, otherwise he's not going to be in our lineup anytime soon.

    I agree with you

I have the same concerns but I am also confident that those concerns will dissapear in due time. He is a bit rawer than other players picked around him in the draft but his ceiling is underestimated I think. He has the tools and talent to become a 30-50 goal scorer but whether or not he will get there is the question. I believe he can become that player but he will need time and patience.

  9. First game with a new team didn't expect a hattrick.

Thought he looked alright despite the penalties, had that cross crease pass to dorsett (not sure if I remember correctly) and other than that he didn't get stuck in as much I had liked to see.

It seemed like he pulled out of a lot of 50-50 situations. Still believe that he should have remained with Utica for the remainder of the season to keep the scoring rate going but hey, 5/10 an average score for his debut from me.

  10. virtanen wore #77 for the canucks when he was out doing the raise a reader thingy i believe... you must have butt loads of money...

    http://video.canucks.nhl.com/videocenter/console?id=633088

good number, wonder if it was a random pick or if he is going to keep 77

He won't keep #77 for an extended period of time. Despite Dorsett and Horvat carrying higher numbers I am pretty sure that the Canucks are still making players pick lower numbers. Personally I like that.

  11. Is it me or does Baertschi have a similar style to that of Radium Vrbata. I haven't seen him play in the ahl but watching this highlight package he seems to play a very similar style.

Great finish, nice passes, and thinks the game real well. Does Baertshi use his speed on breakaways often? I haven't seen any clips of him wheeling and dealing. Looks very promising can't wait to have this kid up playing and learning with Vrbata and the Twins.

Absolutley, can't remember in what thread (could have been this one) or when but I remember posting about what a tremendous tutor Vrbata could be for Baertschi. I see a lot of similarities in their game and I think Vrbata will be able to give Sven some pointers to reaching that potential.

  12. It's so encouraging that Sven is doing so well in Utica so far. I think management will convince the coaching staff to be patient with Sven next season when he get's a spot on the team. Not only will he help out offensively, he will most likely be featured on a struggling 2nd line PP unit, push talent down the line-up making the team deeper, and add a much needed offensive winger to the top 6.

I can't remember the last time the Canucks could potentially be as deep as they could be next year. There will be some changes because the Canucks will be in the luxury of a log-jam on forwards. Perfect opportunity for Benning to acquire one or two draft picks in the 2nd-3rd round of the draft depending on who gets the chop.

Dorsett and Matthias I am 100% convinced will be re-signed, Richardson I am at 40%, I think he might be gone and that's not down to his play, I think he has been fantastic for us. I really like Chris Higgins and I really do hope he stays but I don't think there will be room for him on the roster next season. If Higgins is traded I think Richardson will be re-signed. So the line-up if Higgins is traded for a 2nd round pick(value?)

    Sedin - Sedin - Kassian

    Baertschi - Bonino - Vrbata

    Matthias - Horvat - Burrows

    Dorsett - Richardson - Hansen

    Vey, Kenins

I think Vey might be in risk of being pushed out if he doesn't up his game and improve in the circle. Even if Higgins stays I think Matthias would play over Vey.

  13. I think a player like Jake needs to be developed throughly for him to have a successful career in the NHL. He isn't the most skilled guy but he does the basics of hockey very well. Jake needs to come into the lineup and absolutely ready to go or else he might be rushed into a wrong situation. He would look lost in the NHL.

Another year in the dub, and probably atleast 1-2 years in Utica.

  14. His offensive game is fine. We shall see but I think his total game is ahead of Hansen, Richardson and Dorset, Sestito will be th 13 forward so unless we carry 14 forwards one of the above (or Vey) will have to go for Horvat to stick.

He will have outplayed them by a good margin to make it work for the coaches.

I think he can do it but there may be others who are pushing hard too like Jensen and Shink, etc.

I think you are getting a bit ahead of yourself here. Horvat is a good player and he will become an even better one. As of right now however, I don't think that he has a better "total game" than Hansen or Richardson. Perhaps against players his age but you have to remember the NHL is a lot different and keeps a higher pace. Something that Hansen and Richardson have already mastered since they have been in the league for years.

I don't see Jensen or Shinkaruk making the team, expect both to start in Utica.

  15. If Miller is indeed signed, Markstrom won't be happy at all. I could see him giving up on his NHL dream if this happens and going to the KHL/SHL. Would be a shame because I think he has a ton of potential still and it would be wasted in the AHL.

Miller is obviously a high end goaltending in this league but it needs to be for the right price. I might be convinced if he lets me go on a date with his wife/girlfriend Noureen Dewulf
