    Winnipeg definitely not lol.

I don't think teams will be gunning for a rental goalie at the deadline, especially how Miller in St.Louis went.

Maybe get a 2nd rounder for him, and that's it.

A wrongly timed injury could open it up for Miller.

  2. I think the Canucks made the smart choice this time.

Let's not get away from the fact that Vancouver has got a very good prospect in Stecher. The depth on d moving forwards is very exciting.

I think the best place for him is the AHL this year. His preseason has been great and it has shown how he is capable of playing. However, coming out of college, where they play less games in a year, I think I year on the road in the AHL as opposed to the NHL would be better for him. The biggest thing he would gain would be adapting to the travel and professionalism of the sport, while getting lots of ice time. He deserved every game he played in, but he still has to learn the off ice components to make the jump effectively to the NHL.

It would also make our numbers game easier for our roster. I think we have yet to see the best from Larsen and he would do better with some more time to adjust. I'm not sure about this, but I believe we can send down Pedan without waivers. I think he would be more useful to Utica as they already have Stetcher, Subban and Nilsson on the right side, making Biega a bit redundant. I also think Biega has a chance of being claimed as he is a cheap, right handed, depth defenseman.

    Edler - Tanev

    Hutton - Gudbranson

    Sbisa - Larsen

    Tryamkin, Biega

    -------------------------

    Pedan

    Stetcher

    Subban

    Nilsson

That's a solid group to work with for the upcoming season.

    Couldn't agree more.

I think Stecher could play in the NHL this year but you also need to consider the long-term. Pedan is waiver eligible so there is a risk he is picked up if he's put on waivers but I think that is a decision management will be forced to make. I doubt he get's picked up. I think management will send Stecher to Utica with a lot of praise and the experience of playing against NHL calibre opposition that will drive him to work harder down there.

Is this the deepest the defensive core has ever been for the Canucks? throughout the organization?

    Pros:

    Edler - Tanev

    Hutton - Gudbranson

    Sbisa - Larsen

    Tryamkin - Biega

    Pedan - Stecher
    Subban - Sautner

    Billins - Nilsson

    Cederholm - McEneny

    Junior:

    Juolevi - Brisebois

    Neill - Olson

    Candella - Stewart

  4. Gaunce looks highly determined this preseason and I would be more surprised if he starts in Utica than in Vancouver. Very encouraging to see from a guy I was starting to forget about with our new shiny toys.

It's promising to see that the organization have got quite a few players knocking on the door to make the NHL team. Makes me feel more comfortable about veterans moving on as their roles can likely be filled internally.

  5. Couldn't have started his preseason any better. It's still early and we are yet to see if he can handle NHL forwards on a consistent basis in his own zone but he was nothing but impressive in the offensive zone - something the Canucks desperately need. I posted in this thread way back about how his success will depend on how well he can round out his defensive game because the offense is certainly there already. Very good first audition and am even more stoked on him now.

I still think it would be beneficial for him to start off the year in Utica but if he keeps this up that might not be an option. Hoping for another Hutton story.

Where do Gudbranson, Tanev, and Stecher fit then?  Aren't true hockey trades ones where both teams fill a need by trading a piece from strength in their lineup?  We moved McCann to get Gudbranson.  If Stecher is another Hutton, that frees up JB to move Tanev to get us that elusive (young) top six forward.

Stecher hasn't even laced it up in the AHL yet. You don't trade your best defender in Tanev, just because we have a new shiny toy that has shown well in a prospects tournament. If we are talking about replacing players if Stecher makes the squad, we are talking about Pedan going on waivers/being traded. Not Tanev, not ever Tanev.

  7. Would be highly beneficial for him to go and play in a mens league next season. You don't have to be in a leader role on a junior team to learn about leadership, you can learn from established veteran leaders. For me, the ideal situation for him would be to go and play in the SHL, teams there are not afraid of playing young players (including the best teams in the league) and the level of competition is higher than the Finish league. Frölunda, Luleå, or Skellefteå would be ideal landing spots for him, 3 teams that have had a lot of success in the past years while playing and developing young players. He's already got experience of the N.A ice and will most likely spend time in Utica as well. Get the kid more competition and experience of playing with professionals in a more competitive environment.

The SHL has been forced to become better at developing players because teams simply can't afford to go out and get the best players anymore and pay for the best players. It's become a very good developmental league and is attracting a lot of the best young talents around Europe because it's a very good league to get prepared for professional life and the NHL. Another option that would be very exciting would be for him to play for Jokerit in the KHL, which is Finlands KHL team and Juolevi's youth team. We can talk about ice time but I think if he were to play against men, any ice time he get's would be more valuable to his development than playing in Junior.

Saying all of this, if it ends up being London, well that's arguably the best option in the CHL.

Can you explain to me how you get to that conclusion?

I also want to believe that Boeser is the superior player, but I'm not sure basic production numbers support it.

Tkachuk is coming off a monster season in the O. The previous year for Boeser (14-15,when he was roughly the same age as Tkachuk's comparable year) he had a very good year in the USHL.

I think if you were to consider all the different factors (quality of league, team, linemates, etc...) you'd have to consider that Boeser's 14-15 wasn't quite as spectacular as Tkachuk's 15-16. I don't even think you could say his 15-16 was as good as Tkachuk's 15-16, nor was his WJC.

That's all to say, I'd sincerely love for you to help me believe (or give me strong evidence) that Boeser is the better player, because I don't see it in the basic stats.

He's not saying that. He's saying it would be unfair to compare Boeser to Tkachuk, overhyping him, whatever you want to call it.

  9. A little off-topic, but is this "da beauty league" that Brock is playing in, associated with a charity or something? Couldn't find anything on their website. I know it's in Minnesota so it could be as simple as just having an opportunity to get some on ice action but would be nice to see the guy continue his charitable ways.

Just seen he's gone 50% on faceoffs. Was trusted to take a few key faceoffs for UND last season as well.

  10. Troy has got loads of potential to be real good.

His skating is off the charts and has got very good offensive instincts. All he has to do is improve his defensive game and he can be an impactful NHL defender. He plays bigger than his size as well. I'm really excited for this kid, he's a lot of fun to watch and it shows he has a lot of fun out there as well.

    Is he really, though?

Didn't he produces most of his points off the man-advantage, where he's pretty much fed his passes to Marner and Dvorak for the "give me" assists? You also can't ignore that he plays for one of the top offensive team, in all of major juniors and played in a stacked Finnish World Junior team, with Aho, Puljujarvvi, and Laine.

I honestly don't really see his offensive ceiling that high, for the reasons above. He'd be a great defensemen, don't get me wrong, but I think his productions will top-up at 40 points. Similar to Hamhuis' production, which I see a lot of in Juolevi's game. Safe, smart, great first pass, not overly physical, nothing to fancy.

    Check @Junkyard Dog's post on Page 26.

His only real knock, and the only real reason is lack of lean muscle. Juolevi already has the frame at 6'2 185 pounds, and all the tools. It's actually very similar to one of his best friends, fellow finns, and former London Knight Olli Maata. Maata gives Juolevi pointers on every little thing he needs, including preparation and what to expect. honestly think Maata, isn't too far off to what Juolevi can become, if not better. Juolevi, if he can add some lean muscle to his 6'2 frame can seriously be a top pairing defensman for us for years to come. Horvat leads the forwards, and Juolevi leads the D.

I honestly think Olli Maata is the floor potential for Juolevi and that should be exciting for everyone. Juolevi is better offensively and Maata is a little better defensively but they are both very similar in other aspects. I see a lot of OEL in Juolevi's game. Warming up to this pick even more as time goes by.

I really think Demko's future rides on how well Marky performs this season.

I'm pretty sure it rides on Demko himself.

Benning and co. are ready to move out pieces if a young player has earned a spot.

  14. 1 hour ago, Captain Woodget said:

I must be the only Canucks fan not wanting Hamhuis back. I was upset at how the potential move went down, but looking at our D, this is what I have pencilled in:

    Edler - Tanev

    Hutton - Tryamkin

    Pedan - Stecher

    Biega - cheap UFA

While it leaves the D light on experience, I want to see Hutton, Tryamkin and Pedan take their next steps, and also see Stecher straight into the team to bolster our woeful PP. When the inevitable Edler injury happens, Hutton-Tanev would be our top pairing and Biega would step in with Stecher, leaving Pedan-Tryamkin as the second pair.

I like those options, and that's not including a potential D from the draft - if Chychrun or Juolevi are selected, they'd start the season on the roster too.

With all this, I don't want Hamhuis back. He was a good player for us, but I want to see these kids grow together.

I want to see these kids grow in positions they are ready for. Hamhuis should be re-signed for a lot of reasons. He already took a discount when he signed with the club as a UFA. I don't expect him to sign for anything less than 3.5.

Hammer deserves to be here and with how weak your defensive core looks, I really hope he signs. Pedan, Stecher and Tryamkin to some degree shouldn't be gifted spots on the roster, with how many injuries the Canucks d get as well depth is massively important, Hammer would be a crucial piece. Benning spoke about having to have an 11th guy on the depth chart due to how many defensive injuries the Canucks seem to get in his exit presser.

I think they will rotate defenders in and out in the line-up and let them earn their spots. Unless Stecher has a fantastic camp and pre-season I don't see him making the cut, atleast for the beginning of the season. I expect Subban to get a shot next year as well with one or two call-ups throughout the season.

    Edler - Tanev

    Hamhuis - Sbisa

    Hutton - Tryamkin

    Biega - Pedan

Speaking of kids growing, signing Richard Bachman was such a smart little move by management. He is more than able to fill in as a backup in the NHL and Demko will have a good mentor down in Utica next season. I wonder how they will split the games? I can't judge if Demko is better than Bachman at this point. Maybe that will be established as next year goes on?

Beyond thrilled that the Canucks signed Demko (as expected). There was starting to be some doubt building up in my mind possibly from being on CDC too much but very happy he has committed.

Personal favorite part of this video: Stecher filling up Boeser's skates with water. 12:08. I know this is the Boeser thread but watching this video gives me the impression that Stecher is going to be a guy that's big in the lockerroom to keep things light, seems to be a bit of a goofball

I just read like the last 10 pages of this thread and I didn't really see anyone say that they dont think Demko is going to sign, all I saw was a bunch of people continuously telling each other to calm down, people creeping Thatchers' dad's twitter page and Alf saying some of the most ridiculous crap I have ever seen.

I think the only people here who are paranoid are the ones who keep telling others not to be paranoid.

You've read me like a book.

Although I do believe he will sign here, there is always that little feeling of doubt that is eating me on the inside. I'm trying to look strong on the surface and tell myself it will be fine. Thatcher is a massive piece for this franchise moving forward.

  17. It's going to be really fun around here to witness the reaction of some guys who have been freaking out over Demko when it's announced he is signed. Are you going to put down your pitchforks because Benning did good?

If, the unlikely outcome of him deciding to not sign with the Canucks happens, I hope to god, and I know you won't think rationally then as you don't now, but I am hoping you realize it has nothing to do with the Canucks or Jim Benning, but rather with Thatcher and his right to determine his own career. Management have done everything to get him signed, and you can only do so much.

I hope you voice your outlandish rage in the right direction if the unthinkable happens - which it won't.

    Demko's choice

Sign now with the 1 team that chose you in the draft, OR, Sign after next year with your choice of 1 of 30 teams.

Which option would you choose in that scenario?

There are only a few teams I would consider not playing for and I think i'd voice that during any interviews before the draft. Despite me saying that, I think i could be easily convinced to play for the team that drafted me. I'm not Demko, or an NHL prospect for that matter but I think it depends on the type of person you are. It's a business at the end of the day.

I am 95% sure Demko signs with the Canucks either this summer or the next, and if we lose him, tough luck, can't blame Benning for that.

  19. 43 minutes ago, Captain Woodget said:

Short sighted is not signing now, when our only top 6 RW is Hansen. Next year he'll be behind Hansen, a further-developed Virtanen, an embedded Rodin, plus whatever UFA we sign this summer (Okposo?).

Again, it's not short sighted at all, if anything it's good for him in the long term both in hockey terms and for his education. If anything it's the complete opposite of being short sighted. He's a young prospect of the Canucks who are trying to get younger and are willing to move out veterans in order to do so.. when he's ready, bye bye whoever is taking his spot.

Some posters are claiming there is nothing left for him to prove at the NCAA level and I couldn't disagree more. Brock has undoubtedly blown way past any of the expectations we could have had for him this season. If he can show that he can do that again, or do even better without being on the best line in the entire NCAA, then wow we got something special here. He will be taking on a bigger leadership role and won't benefit from being on that CBS line. Plus, UND have the best facilities in the NCAA and a great coaching staff to boot. It really couldn't be a better fit for his development.

He's got a long career ahead of him it seems, no need to rush him into a Canucks team that will most likely have another tough season next year.
