Benning was brought in for the supposed rebuild that overstayed his welcome by about two years.

Calling people "fanboys" that defend Benning's moves that worked out is over the top.

The rest of the league loves our core, but some of our own fans don't and it's okay. Negativity runs too deep in some cases. Are you guys able to enjoy our team's success in the last 50 games?

Theres nothing wrong with defending Bennings moves that worked out. Its when his wrong moves are COMPLETELY ignored and has to come up with a bunch of sorry A$$ excuses. If he did this, the other guy did that, blah blah blah. If you're completely one sided, which Benning Bros usually are to the Nth degree, no mention of the garbage free agents he signed, crappy asset management, and most off all, lack of wins, then yeah, they should be called fanboys

Negativity runs deep yes, but thats what you get when you get served up 7 seasons of mostly garbage performances by the team

But Lundqvist hasn't proven anything at the NHL level, if he was better than Schneider he'd be playing instead of Schneider. This is exactly the kind of deal I want to see JR/PA avoid, its the magic beans scenario that could lead to nothing for Miller.

I get the magic beans scenario, but what team is going to trade a young player that they know is trending up though? Miller for Caufield? Miller for Jack Hughes? All we can hope is we get as many assets as we can and HOPEFULLY one hits. Guys like Caufield, Hughes, Jason Robertson, etc, its not just the production, but their contract statuses  which make them so valuable

I'm not gonna defend JB. The day he left I popped champagne. He's set this team back years with his mismanagement so no, not a blind follower.

But I'm just trying to be charitable. We saw our president let go because he tried to get owner to buy into a slow cooked rebuild in 2017. This is the same owner we have that wants all trades run past him, it was Aqua who vetoed a Hamhuis deal with Dallas in 2016. Who vetoed Gillis on a Kesler trade to Pittsburgh and fired Nonis for not trading for Brad Richard's. JB wanted to keep his job so he agreed to Aqua's near impossible bullseye of a 'rebuild' while aiming for playoffs.

Benning was a bad GM but Aqua did not want a rebuild and he interferes. I'll grant he let Benning some more autonomy when he threw Linden under the bus tho.

Got myself $hitfaced when I heard he got fired. The absolute worst GM ever, I'd even say he's on par, if not worse than Mike Milbury. Despite some Benning fanboys trying to spin the narrative and try to dazzle you with their BS, on how Benning was such a great "drafter" LOL. Even Jimbo can't hold a candle to Milbury in that dept, at least Milbury drafted 2 soon to be Hall of famers (Chara, Luongo) and Bertuzzi

Where would JB rank overall in all aspects of the job vs the other GM's in the league during his tenure?  No question he ranks behind Tampa Bos NYR Wash Carolina Pit Tor Vegas Cgy Col Min StL Fla.  He ranks clearly ahead of Buf and Ariz.

So that leaves him somewhere between 14 and 30.

Personally I would have him about 20th. He was a below average GM.

See table below. That didn't include Jim Benning's partial tenure here this past season. If you were to add that in, take away his first season which was primarily a Gillis team, he would be the WORST GM in NHL history to have more who have had 7 or more seasons.

The irony is this season would be the 2nd best season under the "Benning" regime. The 2 best seasons he's had was his first when it was the other guy's (Gillis) team, so called left him with nothing (100pt team, playoffs) and Benning's 2nd best season came when his sorry carcass got canned quarter way through the season.

Ahead of Arizona, I'll give you that. Buffalo, thats iffy. They are defintely trending up, and our team is taking a massive step back if Miller or Boeser (both?) get traded, which is very likely

You're comparing Jordan Subban to Jack Rathbone?  Really?

Subban's offensive numbers in the AHL is dwarfed by Rathbone, and Rathbone's defensive game is far more mature than Subban could ever hope for.  Subban is a career long minus player (he's -22 in the ECHL for goodness sake...-21 in the DEL)

The one thing I will concede about Rathbone is that he hasn't done much in the NHL. He's done great in the AHL (though it's a relatively small sample size).

One thing for sure, Rathbone has earned the opportunity to show what he can do in the NHL.  Something that could NEVER have been said about Subban.  And no, no rational person is expecting Rathbone to replace Hughes anytime soon (that last comment is not directed towards you @filthycanuck).

Additionally, Will Lockwood is asserting himself as a bonafide NHL player.  I'll take Lockwood at ELC over Motte at the speculated $2M+ as a bottom six forward anytime.

With the graduation of Demko, Lockwood to the NHL, and potential graduation of Rathbone and Martin, the development of players through the AHL is starting to look a little better.  Maybe it's not so much about the "program", but has more to do with the quality of players coming through.  If that's the case, that is on the people who are drafting the players/prospects.

No doubt Rathbone is a much better player. The comparison is where they were in the depth chart. Subban was a mid round pick, same with Rathbone. Subban during his tenure with the farm, he was the only offensive dman we had coming up the ranks with no one close to him. Same with Rathbone right now

The team has always had a scarcity for puck moving dmen with offensive skill that fans tend to glorify them thinking they are just gonna walk into Rogers arena and theyll all of a sudden be pp1 or pp2 from the get go. Hughes was a rare breed of talent and us landing a dman of that calibre doesnt happen often

What im saying is fans should temper expectations. Rathbone should probably be playing here next season, just dont expect him to be Sam Girard to Quinns Cale Makar. Not right away at least

Whenever Sats is on the air, there seems to be a new made up stat he brings up, that nobody cares about. Next thing you know, they'll be counting drips of piss and how it somehow relates to how many goals Demko lets in per 4 minutes 13 seconds or some garbage

    What's wrong with Puljujarvi?

The last thing Canucks fans need is being upset that a young prospect is being compared to only a good player.

Remember how we all went ballistic and lost our minds when Ray Ferraro compared Virtanen to Jannik Hansen? We were all so pissed at Ferraro at the time and we're ready to bring out the torches and pitchforks ... but I think we can all agree that we would have been happy now if Virtanen did end up being like Hansen for the Canucks

Yup, it was the Satiah Shah (gawd that guy is the absolute WORST) that was leading the charge on that one. Ferraro knows a thing or two about the game, while u may agree or disagree with him, I don't know why the fans here felt almost offended by it.

In the end, Ferraro was wrong. Virtanen was no where close to the player Hansen was. Virtanen couldn't carry Hansen's jock strap

Vegas plays Calgary and Edmonton next. We play the Yotes.

By Saturday we could potentially be 1 point back with a game in hand. In that scenario our fate is in our own hands.

LA has a soft schedule but we have a game in hand and play them in their last game. Potential for a final game showdown with them.

Gonna be an intense next couple weeks…

Add to the fact that if that LA game becomes crucial to us getting in or not, theres a VERY good chance the last game against the Oilers, they sit McDavid Draistl, etc. Its in their best interest to give those guys rest, and they'd rather face us than Vegas or LA

I think you have it wrong.

'82 You're right they weren't a serious contender. The Oilers were the heavy favorites to come out of the west and also favored to win the cup. A true contender. The path was cleared for the 4th place Canucks by other teams upsetting the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd seeds in the first round. It was after that first ound of upsets that the Canucks were actually considered a cup contender. But that also changed the Isles from cup contender to heavy cup favorite. The only team the Canucks faced that you could argue they shouldn't have beaten was the Isles in the finals. That's not to say they didn't play well to get to the finals. But every team they faced they should have beaten and did. 5th place Calgary should have been their toughess opposition to reach the finals and the Canucks swept them. This was a pure case of "make the playoffs and anything can happen".

'94 Their record and playoff seed was very deceiving. Finally getting their compensation from St Louis for signing Nedved just before the trade deadline was a major upgrade to our D. That really changed the quality of the team, but the regular season record didn't show it. Just enough time for the new players to develop some chimistry with their new team.

You won't make the finals if you don't play well. And both of these teams did play well. But both of these "Cinderella runs" also had some real "fairy godmother" assistance involved. You are right that neither was viewed as a contender going into the playoffs though.

'11 We weren't just a contender, but also favorites to win the cup. A true contender. We didn't roll over the Bruins at all though. The simple truth is there were far too many injuries and Thomas played like a Vezina goalie in every game, setting a SCF record for saves, while Luongo only played like a Vezina goalie in 3 games. We sqeaked out three wins by 1 goal in each, and the B's worst win was by 3 goals. The other three win were by 7 goals, and two by 4 goals. I will say this about Luongo, when Salo is the healthiest of your D, and you call Baumgartner to return from vacation, you're in defensive trouble. But Lou standing on his head was our only real hope of winning. A big ask.

Don't want to make any excuses for the 2011 team, but that was straight up garbage on how the NHL delayed the finals because of TV contracts. We finished off the Sharks in 5 and the Bruins won a very grueling 7 game series with the lightning. Usually the finals start 2 days, 3 days MAX after the Bruins won their series. I distinctly recall the finals starting about a week ( I think more) after the Bruins beat the lightning. Thats a lot of time of rest given to the Bruins. Had the finals started when it should've had, just maybe the results would've been different. 2 days of rest after a game 7 series is a whole lot different than a week

More than that! But I dunno if I see 80 - 90 pts though. If he keeps up the way he plays, hes going to have a long NHL career. Garland was on at 650 a few days ago and said the vets in the team are gushing on how good Podz is going to be

But what about when they try to sell average at best players as cornerstone elite players?  Aqua and his marketing team have been doing it for years and fans who dont know any better eat it up.

Its time this fanbase wake up and let management know we want players that can take us to something relevant.

I agree. I think Miller EP40 are good players, but they are no where in the realm of the most of the playoff teams top guys. The difference between us and the top guys in the standings (save for maybe LA, Minny, NY), their top end players are better, and they have more of them

Maybe it’s just me but is anyone else finding it hard to get excited for next year? I look at our depth and the lack of prospects in the system. I keep hearing they may want to retain Boeser and keep Miller and it doesn’t sound like a lot of change might happen. I am also worried about the bad contracts we have on this team and how they might limit their ability to make changes. If we are seeing that some of these contracts as bad then what do other teams think of them and why would they want them? They really handcuff what the organization can do. It’s mostly the depth in the system that bothers me. It’s crazy to look at Tampa and Colorado who are already great teams but they can always go their system and get more. Anyways, is there anyone else with the same thoughts. I am hopeful with the new management and I am so happy Benning isn’t here anymore.

Tampa is successful because they were able to develop their mid-late round picks into good, useful players. Look at their back to back cup rosters, they have lots of players that graduated from their Syracuse farm team. Palat, Cirelli, Cernak, Killorn, Point, all at some point played in Syracuse. You need franchise cornerstones, but the rest of the roster matters as well. They also made some budget signings that worked out well for them like Schenn, Marroon and trades that landed them Goodrow and Coleman. They made the right moves to fill out the roster without signing them to boneheaded contracts like the idiot running the ship for our team the past 8 seasons

But yeah to your point, not to excited about next year considering the lack of depth, in contrary to the Benning fanboys who think "we have so many exciting prospects" (We don't, Jim Rutherford says so) If JT Miller leaves this team which he will, the next few seasons are gonna be very tough for us with little cap flexibility, with little coming up the ranks since our prospect pool is bare

What contracts are so bad that they can't be moved or are impeding the team? I think too many people believe what other people say treating other fans words as fact.

Myers,  Pearson,  Poolman, OEL, are the ones I hear the most about but in reality the only one that would be an issue is OEL because he completely controls where he plays but the other 3 could easily be moved without any retention just Like Hamonic and many others around the league that fans deemed un-tradeable.

Myers has had an excellent season and has played literally the top 5 hardest minutes in the league who's a big, fast and mean and being an RHD makes him valuable in itself.

Pearson makes 3 million a year and is the type of player that coaches love to have in their top 9.

Tucker is a bit overpaid but again he's a RHD that is good when used on the bottom pairing but because we have 190 man- games lost on defense this season he was asked to play minutes that weren't ideal.

I'm not trying to make excuses but this team has played so much of the season with key players out its a little unfair to rag on the depth imo. Saying all that this team has been a top 10 team under Bruce so I don't think major changes are needed but a lot will depend on what happens with JT and Brock.

Assuming they are back I would like to see cap flexibility created by moving Dickinson,  Poolman or Myers, depending on who we could get to  replace Myers minutes.

I think if OEL could play on his off- side that would be huge since that would slide Myers down to a role better suited for him.

Sutter, Hamonic, Dickinson, poolman, Pearson, is 13 million that could be freed so there are ways to create cap without subtracting from the core and could be spent on players that are faster and might fit in better then the guys being shipped out. For me I think we need more speed and a winger for the top six that is a playmaker, having Petey as Horvats winger is a complete waste imo.

I think we have a really good core and the numbers under Bruce show that but the issues are with the guys around them and I don't think those guys are terrible and anchors they just don't compliment the core that we have and it's up to the new GM to make either hockey trades to shuffle things up or move some of the guys I mentioned to create cap but this is a really weak UFA crop so actual hockey trades might be the best way to go.

When it comes to our prospects there's no doubt it's lacking but keep in mind that we have graduated Brock, Petey, Quinn, Demko, Podz, Hoglander, and probably Rathbone and Lockwood, while using two 1sts to get JT and Garland.  So that's actually a better success rate than the two teams you use as an example.

In that same time period the Avs from their draft picks have Rants, Makar, Newhook while using two 2nds to get Toews, a 1st for Keumper, while the bolts have Point as there only real impact player on their roster and have given up a ton of picks in exchange for older players and have only 1 1st round pick since 2010 (Vasi) on their roster.

Before that like us they drafted some core guys like Kuch, Stamkos, Hedman and then built around them.

So not sure what prospects your talking about recently.

Looking at the contenders they mostly have the same blue-print which is draft their core over a 5+ year window and then use picks and prospects to surround the core with players that were developed by other teams and signing UFAs to complete their roster.

If your not convinced that this core is good enough that's fair but for me I think we are and we should be looking to add players around the core that fit the style of the guys we have while moving the ones that don't.

Hopefully Klimovich,  Linus, Woo and a few others can be that cheap complimentary pieces that will help keep the cap in check.

Sorry for the million words, I get the negativity your feeling but a lot can happen before October and not many teams have been lucky enough to draft the elusive 1C, 1D and 1G like us. Just ask the wild, Hab, and most other teams.

I don't think the Habs expected to follow up a season after going to the finals to be without Weber, and Price. They would be a fair bit higher up the standings with those 2 guys

The Wild are going to be in the playoffs this season, and with a plethora of prospects in the wings, will probably be there the next few seasons. They are doing just fine in comparison to us.

Fwiw, imho, Tampa and Colorado (and any other teams with superstars) are the wrong comparables if you want hope. I would look at the Flames. If they can do it with the players they have in just a few years, we should be able to do so as well. Heck, other than their coach, the biggest difference makers on their team from 2 years ago are 2 ex-Canucks in Tanev and Markstrom which they got through cap space.

Well some of their Stockton graduates are playing a big part in their success right now (Dube, Mangiappane, Kylington, Anderson). Canucks are gonna need to fix whatever the hell is going on with their farm team. They've hardly churned out any talent the last 8 years

When we traded for Luongo to me at least, you could tell something special was going to happen.    He was otherworldly in Florida.   There isn't a goaltender the last 30 years that did what he was doing, night in night out on a bad team.    Was peppered.   Making crazy Hasek like saves.     But even with him our future was in doubt.   Sedins we're doing better but certainly not top players.     Kesler was just cutting his teeth.   Bieksa (who to me was a core player - over Hamhuis) and Burrows - who were those guys?   Burrows was obviously a core player too, nobody but Carter - and there were a lot of them - could get second line production out of the Sedins up to then.   So i'm agreeing with you.   It's still a young team getting it's sea legs, and a lot could happen just via core ascension still.

What did MG do with all the cap that Nonis never had?  Bring in the late great Mats Sundin lol.   20 million for two freaking years.   Glad Mats was a gentleman and left all that money on the table.   Otherwise we'd have never had any money for any support.

One could argue 10 other teams right now also stack out better then us, but there are not that many that have core guys in our age group.   Aside from Luongo coming in - really i'd have to question that anyone actually foresaw that we'd become that good back then as well.    Guys weren't "killing it" yet.   Would anyone be surprised if EP exploded next season?  Might come as a surprise a little but not really.   How many people saw Kesler turning into the type of player he was, or Bieksa or Burrows?   The Sedins at least has the pedigree given where they were drafted - but before the lockout they almost retired.

Sundin played a part on Kesler's development to becoming a Selke winner, he said so LOL. Just 10 teams? More like 20 teams. Seriously? Petey isn't elite, the guy whos never had 30 goals or 70 pts. He's hardly a top 20 player in the league.

Geez you Benning fan boys and your unwavering support for a guy who's 2nd to Keenan as the worst GM in the teams history. What did MG do with with the cap hit Nonis never had? 2 Presidents trophies, Stanley cup final and numerous division titles, the GREATEST Canuck era, with the GREATEST Canuck team ever assembled. Thats what he did.

What did Benning do? Go to Rogers arena and count the banners in the ceiling, remind me again how many of those are from Bennings era
