I would have preferred to see T. Ham get 4-5 games in Abby before the call up. I’m sure he’ll be fine with the big club, but I think he’d do better having his own little pre season in the A. Oh well. Good luck Ham, welcome back.

yeah hopefully he's been working out "some" if he was able to under whatever was going on but Ham has a lot of skill and pretty good positionally wise to start with so hope it's relatively seemless but who knows, guess we're going to find out...

I hope he's a good guy and well liked in the room which gives the team a boost.  We need any kind of boost we can get

the boost actually will come from more playing time, most people refuse to believe it but whatever. I guess it's easy to forget this is our first season with a new team for a change, and guys simply don't develop chemistry overnight, it takes awhile that nobody wants to hear but it's still true, and new faces in coaching positions too, good grief, and mostly without Hughes and Alien on top of that and needed adjustment, their still young, add tryouts and trying to mesh it altogether and no motte either would not be easy so seriously, people really need to settle down, relax, make some popcorn and just watch without freaking out, honestly, look what this team has been through over the years and be thankful we're just getting started with a new team for a change. can we give it more than a handful of games? lol  wait.. this is the CDC and the sky is perpetually falling.. ;)

Wait.... so we have more than enough RHD's now?? And Hunt will be a fulltime LHD on 3rd pairing? Something is not making sense...... can we pls get Juolevi back?????

So playing on your other side on D is impossible? C'mon, I played D for the Powell river regals when I was young, I played my other side no problem because I was good at reading plays and positioning and an adjustment to it isn't a massive huge deal like your making it out to be, just more focus on positioning is all, not the best scenario but short term? can be done until something is figured out so the sky isn't falling..

I remember reading fantasy news in a hockey magazine at Safeway (remember magazines?!) prior to the post-Carter year.

The advice, roughly paraphrased here was: "Don't draft the Sedins too high. Their potential for bust is through the roof without Carter to play with". Now, nothing personal against Anson - seemed like a good dude - but did he ever make a mistake not re-signing.

And also, could that also be the reason we don't buy magazines anymore? I mean, I'm open to other suggestions, but I feel like flabbergasting miscalculations like that could be the very reason they went out of style.

Carter blew it because he started to think it was all about him but it was the twins who made HIM look good with a lot of his goals bring simple tap-ins etc from players being drawn out of position by the twins, same with erhoff, he almost sucked completely with the sharks to the point of fans nicknaming him errorhoff but not in Vancouver so much because playing with the twins who did most of the work which didn't really require too much from linemates to look good and not make many mistakes.

I just hope TG leans on Podz some more and Podz sheds his "tentative" skin and pins his ears back.

He's new so it can be expected but as soon as he gets traction? could be a lot of fun to watch lift off from this kid.

TG was right to ease him and not feed him to the wolves and let him get used to the speed of the NHL but that seems to be wearing off game by game but I'm thinking that with Highmore out, Podz will get more time unless Petan comes in and plays lights out, it's Podz turn to shine!

Can hardly wait until next season to see if Podz and Klim end up on a line together...

Players that we never resigned, who went on to get contracts with new teams. There's a few notable defenseman. I remember for most of these, the fanbase agreed it was best to let them go, because their next contract wouldn't be worth it. And we were right.

Christian Ehrhoff 10 years, 40 million. Would have been under contract this year still ! Bought out in 2014.

Matthius Ohlund. 7 years, 26 million. He had no goals and 13 assists in 2009/10. He would end the 2011 season with 72 games played but no goals scored with only five assists.  Öhlund finally scored a goal in a Tampa Bay uniform, an empty-netter in game 2 of the opening round, a 5-1 win over the Penguins in Pittsburgh. He would go on to add two assists over the 18 games the Lightning played before being eliminated by the eventual Stanley Cup champion Boston Bruins in the seventh game of the Eastern Conference Finals. He hasn't skated since.

Ed Jovanovski. 5 years, 32.5 million. That's a 6.5 million dollar cap hit in the the 2006/2010 world.

Cory Schneider 7 years, 42 million.

Who else ?  Ehrhoff will be tough to beat.

Ohlund wasn't a scorer, he didn't need to be, hitting everything that moved like a tank and moved the puck well. Ohlund and Salo were amazing for this team for quite awhile.

That's why I don't have much good to say about so-called "hockey writers" not taking into account a situational problem that was happening but nothing new, it's typical as usual... nothing new..  blah

At the end of the day Podz easing Podz into the team slowly wasn't/isn't a bad idea until he got his feet wet enough to know what to expect, however with the new injuries to us, he will keep getting more and more ice time the more TG trusts him. No matter what Podz is Podz and he wants it bad enough so no one needs to freak out it raise a huff, and just be thankful he's here and a future potential line of  Podz Bo and Klim to be lethal and one of the top 2nd lines in the league next season. Looking forward to it.

Green's overwhelmed? Well yeah that's painfully obvious.

It has been obvious for awhile now. Not just this pre season and a few games.

well that was the same thing, new faces over and over and STILL just over now and might be another one or 2 but it's slowly coming, if it wasn't the  yeah but I still say another couple of weeks and then revisit but I'll stick to my "it's early" BUT again if we nose dive hard for long enough then maybe it's time to change..

    No. Just Green.

You know, I'd almost agree but I think it might be a point where he's overwhelmed NOW that he has weapons to do battle with, seems he's just getting used to having so many options he'd bound to mess up but however I think the team should just be patient with all the new faces we've had come in, but at the end of the day it's up to Aquaman, and I doubt if any other thing going on than just finishing a rebuild and beginning to try and hone it wasn't going on then yeah I could see him with walking papers but for now it's a lil premature under 10 games into the season but if we go on a long losing streak with no forward progress it could happen.

Calm down!  We aren't allowed to be reasonable on the PGT, it's all gloom and doom after a loss - or "were going streaking" after a win.    As an aside, i've sure enjoyed the media out East - they aren't freaking out and ready to fire Keefe yet.   Surprise surprise.   But they are concerned.

Oh right, the sky is falling again, what was I thinking?  might as well scrap the whole team and management, wait why stop there? sell Rogers place and get it over with...

  11. Well I liked short stretches in the first period when they showed flashes of brilliance BUT for whatever reason, they just didn't  forecheck anywhere near fast enough and way too many passes to the PP and not that fast of puck movement all game so it gave minny a chance to set up and defend well. Hughes for some reason stopped shooting his bombs and passed too much when he could have shot but even if he didn't score there would probably been juicy rebounds but for some reason it was an "all pass" night for him for the most part.

Except for 1 or 2 small gaffs, I love how Myers played, one of his best outings yet.

All in all, when they play a full 60 like that small flash of brilliance, but will still take a few games or more. I'm hardly concerned..

Why was a rebuilding team overpaying for a player like Beagle who was in the tail end of his career when we already had Sutter. Somehow within a season we went from a rebuilding team that needed to overpay for veterans to a team that's selling futures for a rental like a contender.

I don't know how you can say Holtby was a safe bet when he was coming off multiple poor seasons. He wasn't bought out because he wasn't needed anymore, he was bought out because we needed the cap space. We kicked the can down the road and will have more dead cap next year. If it wasn't for all this cap mismanagement, we probably could have retained Tanev and/or Toffoli.

Vets were brought in to mentor on and off the ice, results won't show for awhile yet but they will, old news? yup!

Didn't you hear? Power forwards take longer to develop. Stay patient, Jake will turn it around next year. Thank god I don't have to listen to those people anymore. :picard:

well it's true except they don't need to be coddled in any way, shape, or form but it happened and look what happened, he couldn't even take professional advice from his peers let alone Greener, JV was/is just spoiled and stubborn, pretty hard if not impossible to turn that ship around, well possible but highly unlikely..

The trade might work out?... it has the potential to be one of the best trades in Canucks history. Long way to go, but it looks immense just now.

it does carry some risk with both the cap and longevity of OEL, but those are the kind of risk we have to take at some stage to go forward.

Bo ain't gonna hang around for ever, if we continue drifting around the bottom of the league, and neither is EP.. He has said so himself...

I, for one, is happy to see us pushing on now.

Agreed, the trade couldn't help but work out as JB knew and especially a change of scenery is what some players need especially in Ari. but a OEL contract in a few years or less has a good chance of being a lot more money so throw in Garland and we win! same with JT Miller, picks for a proven performer we need without having to gamble on a pick then develop, (we only have time for that in a small way and we already have that so one less gamble)  and continue to need to help grow our young guys to their potential and believe me, in OEL, there's no reason he can't be still good at the end of his contract, he's just that good.

    Morning all!

First things first, this isn't a shame thread or a holier than thou rant. I intend this to be a legitimate dialogue based off what I have noticed this year on Canucks socials and even on this forum. I could be totally in the wrong, a complete homer, and that clouds my judgement a little (wouldn't be the first time, cough Jake Virtanen cough). But I feel like based off how this season has gone so far, people tend to be overly negative about the start, that I just don't see.

Elephant in the room, Benning in my opinion has made some major mistakes recently. I don't want this thread to become a Benning bashing corner based off past mistakes, though I do understand that some of the negativity around the team goes hand in hand with Bennings past faults. I do recognize his faults though, and both Gadjovich and Juolevi were major miss plays, in my opinion.

But this team just went 3-2-1 on a 6 game road trip to start the season, with multiple season openers. In my opinion that was an outstanding start to the season. Furthermore we did that without 2/3 of our 4th line, a top 4 D, all 3 being our best penalty killers, a few games without our best winger, and let's be honest did it all without our 'best player' being our best player. This team is finding a way to win games that we shouldn't really be winning. Once we start rolling this team has all the potential in the world.

I guess my question is this, and I would love to talk to people who don't see eye to eye with me. Is the current makeup of the organization, Travis, Jim, the players, really not good enough in the current day? Or are people just upset over the multiple mistakes made over the years and just fed up. Because I look at this offseason as a net win, brining in Garland, OEL, and making some other good moves. This team looks better to me right now that it has in many years and I honestly think we are trending in the right direction.

(I apologize for spelling errors, I have dyslexia and often have to edit my posts multiple times to iron out all my oversights when I write something, and will do so over the day)

No it goes to show you can't fix stupid as a lot of people have been over this team since 2012 especially without taking into consideration the big picture and the circumstances and even worse the joke of a group of people we have in the media.. talk about the blind leading the blind, and stupid, if not stupid, then stubborn and refusing to think for themselves, instead take everything into account, not just things they hear and automatically think is correct and as laughable as it all is in a way, it's as lame as shyte, no this isn't looking at the team in rose coloured glasses either as THAT would equal homerism equal to the stupidity/stubborn BUT there are folks who do well at looking at the team with a critical but cautiously optimistic eyes, who, btw keep me coming back to see what's new and happily glad the summer shyte show is over but the smart folks are just watching the team and seeing where it will go now that the build is pretty much over.

always remember drama kings/queens/trolls will always be with and the clickbait media but whatever, is what it is..

Remember when folks were saying the Sedins will at best be second line players? And Kesler will be nothing more than a 3rd line centre?

    Fun times.

and Bo would be a career 3rd line center? Edit: I first heard statements like that started by the media... goes to show they still don't know shi_, especially the JT Miller trade lately and I won't even start on OEL and Garland.. it will never stop..

I'm a Rathbone fan but there's been an egregious turnover almost every game. If this was Juolevi (or Rathbone was a top pick) he would be crucified.

He's learning on the job as much as Podkolzin is IMO. It sucks Pod is easier to remove b/c he's made fewer glaring mistakes than Rathbone.

Every NHL superstar has made their share of mistakes, they just stop happening as much with experience...

  18. Well I'm glad we won, saw the new James Bond flick tonight instead but glad to see we pulled another off another win, one could almost feel like Bo was going to break out and show again why he has the C and glad he's on!

As far as I'm taking it, this is sort of pre-season still and practice for the better teams coming our way soon but we're still a way of from anywhere near our potential but in time right?

I can say this, I don't enjoy hockey as much as I once did. Not sure if that because of age and seeing the same mess  again and again ad nausea,  nothing is fresh. But I also think that coaching minor hockey where you're duty bound to try and  improve your players and then scouting uni players ( looking for good and bad points rather than watch the game) has  taken a toll. I think I watch playes rather than the game. But I stand by my posts. Many simply can't handle bad plays and choose to look past them. If there's a mistake I call it out, like I did with Juolevi's flaws  years ago and some didn't like it, in fact many coldn't even see it

    But that's my entertainment

So your saying about OJ, if a young player plays like a young player and makes mistakes here and there then get rid of him right away? I'd favour JB's approach to giving someone a chance to see if he can overcome and injury which was clearly OJ's case, he may never recover to be able to pivot as fast as the NHL requires but maybe he does. We're a team that can't afford to gamble like that anymore, we're simply not a established team yet like others are that could give him a chance for a longer period of time.

However a large part of that was the play of Rathbone who is the better player so it was the right call easily.

You sound a bit like me before JB arrived and started to dismantle the broken team we ended up with from 2012 onward but if that kind of butter soft team with a new GM who was ok with a good regular that crapped the bed in the playoffs but filled the seats every night and made money as we did for many years I would have stopped watching and almost did because of it but JB came along and even though I wasn't happy with all his moves, I'm still watching because he's doing his best to ice a competitive minded team that is balanced with skill and toughness with depth so until the finished product has some time to get used to each other, the jury is out imo.

And if JB had of been fired, that would have been it for me, back to the same ole b.s. I've seen for the better part of 40 odd years isn't worth my time watching.

True, but Klim's skill set works with talented players. At age 18 he sees the ice, passes the puck and shots like a top 6 NHL player. He just needs time to learn the speed and physicals demands of the Canadian game.  At 18 he still needs to gain maturity in all accepts of his life. Doing so in the AHL is less demanding then being in the spot light of the NHL especially in Vancouver market.  He already is showing he can play the game at a high level now he needs time to get comfortable living life in a whole new country.

well that was me not setting my sights too high on any one player but trust me when I say I'm cautiously stoked to see Klim make our top 6 but even at a bottom 6 he'd add a bit shot of offence to whatever line he plays in but I'm thinking it's more of an on ice adjustment to the smaller rink the NHL has which means everything happens a lot faster but I'm quietly confident he'll be ok especially as time goes on. A ppg player who is new to the league is pretty impressive and I sure liked what I saw of him. Yeah has all the skills for sure.

  21. glad to see another point, so far a ppg player and hope he keeps it up. Almost has to, usually ppg players can make it to the NHL on a 3-4th line at the least unless they can't do some of it in the bigs so nice to see Klim doing it and the rest is just wait and see but liking it so far.
